Because having mix-ups that positively add to or subtract from the enjoyability of the game are something that'll constantly be an occurrence. No commons channel is one such thing, but isn't so bad it's not fixable.

That's what I'm saying. It's obviously going to play out badly, so just make it a station trait, so the engineers can jury rig a commons channel each time it happens.

Someone had the idea of giving the Detective the passive ability to understand distant whispers like they were normal says, and giving him a listening device that also works as the Stethoscope idea, with even a small fuzzy visual of the other side.

I think it'd be good to trial removing common from headsets. Common channel is accessible only from intercoms forcing you to commit effort to using it. Where do mechanically more versatile mechs like Ripleys fall in here? Though they're not used often, Ripleys can serve quite a large number of functions onboard the station, from reconstruction, fire-fighting, and hauling cargo.
