The biggest problem is that you usually don't notice them until you're within their range, because your visual range and their attack range are only a couple squares apart (in my experience).

Random bit of advice (it should seem obvious, but desperation sometimes makes people do crazy things): NEVER USE SPRAYCAN FLAMETHROWERS INDOORS. If the fire and smoke don't kill you, parts of burning buildings can actually collapse and crush you.

It's kind of a pain in the ass (and not well advertised at all), but you need a power storage unit in addition to a power source and your to-be-powered bionics. Try butchering a few shocker zombies.

Eskrima has a block, I believe, which Silat doesn't (at least not as early as Eskrima). If you really want hand-to-hand defense, though, karate seems to be the way to go.
