Braindamage Chat Filter
Hi, this is gonna be quick. Isn't it kind of hypocritical that we ban people for netspeak because it breaks immersion, yet the game forces people to break that immersion anyway? It kind of ruins any legitimacy the netspeak rule has.

Maybe it's just me but I always thought pretty much all of the lines in the brain damage list were obnoxious even before they broke server rules, it'd be better if it was just replaced with a "john spaceman gibbers" emote or something
Like, nobody is actually going to even pretend to think you mean anything it makes you say

It's funny and helps other have fun and enjoy the game. I don't understand why so many people who play SS13 and claim to love the atmosphere of the game are so strongly against silly additions to the game. Is it impossible to RP in an environment that isn't dead-serious and boring? Why is it so bad to play as a man driven to the brink by the insane space world he lives in, where every time he goes to work he's attacked by shapeshifters and terrorists? An environment like that does not produce well-adjusted and fully rational people, and it is a farce that we expect the game to conform to that.Jacquerel wrote:Maybe it's just me but I always thought pretty much all of the lines in the brain damage list were obnoxious even before they broke server rules, it'd be better if it was just replaced with a "john spaceman gibbers" emote or something

You've made some weird assumptions about my motives here. If I had something against silliness I'd be railing for the removal of wizard mode, not something so trivial as the brain damage speech lines.
I'm quite happy to have effects that drive people insane, I'd just rather they didn't make someone spout memes. There's far more creative things you can do with a brain damage effect than have them read off a list of tired one line jokes that don't even make you laugh the first time you read them.

Re: Braindamage Chat Filter
if people say retarded gibberish people are less likely to listen to them when they yell they're getting murdered in maint. it's supposed to be stupid tbh. replacing it with a "urist mcspesshman gibbers" emote would sort of miss the point. also, we can't add something that's not a list. the list is going to be exhausted and become predictable even if there are no epic meems in it.

I always laugh at the gibbering people. I love when they scream "HALP" and the other ways it forces them to fuck up basic speech. You know behind their computer monitor is a serious person looking to seriously get shit done on SS13 except whenever he tries to share his aspirations all that comes out is "HALP U BLOB EVAOLAUTOEE GRIEFING ME!!! are some of you brain-damaged in real life
when someone has severe brain-damage in game, they start saying nonsensical assortments of memes and shit. in-character, this comes off as garbled nonsense; out of character, that's the entire joke. it does not mean they are breaking the rules and they are not going to get this banned. (and lo and behold, no one has been banned for in-game damage! it's almost like this entire thread is a gigantic straw man.) it's like saying pierrot's throat makes you break the rules because you are spamming: it's fucking stupid.
"special" points to people going "b-but why can't I roleplay a heavily braindamaged character" which falls under the same already in the rules rubric of "guyze my character is so INSANE and RANDOM to talk like this, and I'm totally going to reference this RP anywhere outside bullshit to win a forum argument!"
I especially like how all of this argument is thinly-veiled whining, STILL, about A FIFTEEN-MINUTE BAN. at this point the length of time of bitching about this ban has gone on for at least 1000x the length of the original ban.

As the chief proponent of these idiotic OOC in IC bans, you really should have an actual reason. If there's an actual reason netspeak shouldn't be allowed in game, then the code should also not force people to say netspeak in game.Saegrimr wrote:Because you're a terrible person and we're making up rules specifically to spite you.Saintish wrote:Alright I'll lead you through this. In short, it comes down to this:
Is netspeak something that should be in SS13?
Yes: Then stop banning people for it.
No: Then take out the code that makes people do it.

I think the in-jokes add a bit of humor to what could become a far too serious game.
Like when I hear cultists chant together "IB-LAME-TOXI-NS" I ease up a little, laugh at the ridiculous way I just died.

ss13 is a silly game
silly references are allowed and thus it makes sense for them to be in the code
saying 'u' instead of 'you' isn't allowed - so why is it in the code? is there some magical attribute that makes braindamage netspeak less immersion-breaking than player netspeak?
