Security Sprites: 2015 Edition

Its been a year (about a month) since our last debate over the security sprites. As such I feel its been enough time for people to get a feel for the new sprites, as well as a opportunity to get some more discussion on a subject that's held close to my heart.

Here is a good picture to summate the three different security sprite styles we can select from at this time.

Image

So, what style do you like? Do you want to keep the current pap sprites, switch to the ausops or go back to the days of old (technically the old sprites are pap's revisited sprites, but I digress)?

So long as anything discussed actually matters this time.

I'm avoiding a poll until there's been sufficient discussion, mainly so that paprika can't try and blow off the poll as being reactionary.

I like steel's ausops with the classic "old" helmet the best myself, especially if HoP and barman get the "old" armour style armour. I really REALLY don't like security not being immediately recognizable, and with the grey "corporate" sprites, they really aren't, especially if they don't have their beret on for whatever reason. With ausops, every single part of the sprite was unique to sec with the sole exception of the armour, which are shred by HoP and bartender. With the ones we have right now, only the beret is immediately recognizable. The rest of the sprite looks quite literally like a grey suit. Sec pretty much blends in with the crowd, which should not be the case. Especially the new armour sprite. I really hate that one, you can barely tell it is there against the sprite of the suit.

Also, bring back armoured knees.

What I would do is, if people wanted it, to return to the old "ausops" sprites with the kneepads, keep the Beret as standard issue and put a helmet inside officers lockers.

But I would like to know what other people think.

I prefer the look of the old sprites. Nice color and I think helmets and hats are better than berets.
But I think it would be nice of all outfits were available in various closets, effort went into making them and everyone has their preference.
I dont see why we have to argue instead of making all of them an option.

Though that is mainly true for jumpsuits, I guess keeping multiple armor and armored headwear around would oversaturate the station with them.
Maybe we could have a vending machine that accepts clothing and you could exchange stuff for another item that goes in the same slot.

Paprika did say he was working on a system to allow Officers to select their own uniform, I actually support allowing the Head of Security to set his departments uniform theme.

But that was a while ago, and there's no visible progress.

I think that regardless of what sprites are used, having a "uniform" uniform is important, so that sec look, if not identical, at least alike each other, making it more clear at a glance that this is sec investigating a crime, not a random gaggle of people who happen to include security. Having the HoS set theme at shift start or in config options would help immensely in that regard, as well as allowing a certain amount of flexibility in what the security force looks like.

I was simply using the image that was provided on IRC. I'll double check though.

However, don't use that to detract from the situation.

No armband. Broken armband sprite on 'steel' and 'old'.

Come on dude it's the details.

Anyway I'm still working on the clothing set picking thing but there's been complications and it's also a really hard thing to do for a new coder so be patient.

I like the vest in Paprika's but the overall look is better in Steelpoint's, in my opinion. Specifically the red color. Would it be possible to do a hybrid?
I'm sure the broken armband could be fixed in both other sprites.

Might be a good idea to ask for some help from other coders.

Still gonna vote for Steelpoint's stuff. the new armor does not look like armor at all. I really hope player opinion will be considered this time.

Just to set the record straight.

This is what the Security sprites looked like before anyone tried to change anything

Image

This is what the Security sprites looked like after I changed the sprites to ausops sprites.

Image

Now these are the sprites paprika tried to change to.

Image

Then he changed it to these sprites after most people disliked them.

Image

Then I countered with these sprites.

Image

Finally Paprika got these sprites (also made by ausops before pap pissed him off)

That helmet is the same helmet as the other one's pap uses, it looks different due to compression and that person is not wearing sechuds.

PERFECT.

The caveat with that armour being that HoP and barkeep both look better with the "breastplate" armour.

Yeah, that's pretty much perfect.

I'd like alternate costumes for all the departments, in an ideal world. Imagine a security force that looks like the mind-controlled humans in The Dalek Invasion of Earth.

I always like the idea that sec would look like HL2 metropolice, except in red, because red is the SS13 sec color

Red is THE sec colour.

They're exclusively redshirts, after all.

I like Paprika's jumpsuit because the red highlights the gray well. Only thing I'm not a fan of is the armour.

I just dislike how grey is being made sec's primary colour, I personally prefer red being its primary colour. Not to mention the armour/helmet makes grey the secondary colour.

Grey doesn't quite make sense I agree. Black would in more than grey due to it being our armor hue.

I actually made the argument on IRC about how as Security Officers increase in rank, from Officer to Warden to the Head, they show more black and less red.

I digress, the best idea I've seen that would satisfy everyone involved is for paprika's system of allowing the head of security to select the departments aesthetic style for the round.

Barring that I would continue to support redcurity.

Ayy design by committee

All issues with this are caused by a single individual running rough shod.

Also coders are a committee too.

But grey used to be the armor hue until steelpoint made it black to satisfy his lust for security looking like edgelords.

I was a big supporter of the Corporate sprites, but now that we've had them for a while and I've got to see them in action, I think my support has wavered. As nice as the sprites are, they are admittedly pretty grey, and the armor looks more like a waistcoat than anything.

Than again, I still didn't really think highly of the tacticool tier 1 mall cop sprites, but I guess I'm just hard to please.

Ugh, changing department colours. I got sick of green medbay quickly; I'm so glad it went blue instead.

Then again, science could do with having a little more purple in their clothing. I like the roboticists' jumpsuits, but it might work better with purple instead of red.

Yeah WJohnson and I. I don't recall WJohnson saying anything on this matter yet. I said in the IRC I think it'll be best to wait for Paprika to finish his outfit picker then just add in more outfits.

I for one quite like greycurity. But then red works fine too. The one thing I don't like is the beret: it looks silly with a bunch of hairstyles, it doesn't have head protection like a helmet (so, for example, the chaplain can't heal you as safely) and I don't think it manages to look terribly smart either.

I quite liked parprika's white security as well, but I guess that was just me? It seemed a bit smarter than red pyjamas.

This, why did we change how the beret looks on somebody's head a few months ago?
Or did we never change it and I just like/ got used to the baycode berets?

I honestly don't like that berets have replaced helmets entirely. I love berets, but much of their charm was forfeiting your tangible combat bonus for the sake of looking cool. Then you could suit up again when shit hits the fan in a big way. If people want helmets back i dont see an issue with it, as long as we can still grab berets from the sec wardrobe locker

To be honest the reason why berets are standard issue was during my attempt to keep the red security sprites in the game. I tried to compromise that in giving Officers berets as standard issue and not helmets it would somehow be more convincing to not change the sprites.

Security sprites are a fucking mess ever since paprika moved forward with his change. Its been a tug of war with no chance to get something worked out because everyone's fighting for their own personal interpretation of how the sprites should look.

I hope pap's sec sprite selection PR is finished soon, because that's the best option we have at this point.

Seclite that looked robust as fuck, as if you could break someones skull with it (rightfully so, I used it instead of harmbaton), now looks like plastic Chinese toy. Muh tacticool attachments. "Realistic" gimmicks, a blight upon ss13.
