our medicine naming convention's existence doesn't make sense

Post by Itseasytosee2me » #640356

Brute = -ibital
Burn = -uri
Oxy = -mol
Tox = iver
Organ = -rite

Having a bunch of different medicine with the same back end make them both difficult to mentally distinguish, as well as making them look worse
I very much understand this is to allow people to understand what type a damage a chemical should heal at a glace, but it really doesn't make much since in practice. Inexperienced doctors are going to be taking chems out of kits, which are already handily labeled what type of damage their medicine type deals with, and to experienced doctors it makes no difference, because they are going to want to know or already know exactly what a chemical does to heal the best they can. Chemists will be referencing the wiki or in game database and therefore have no need for this system either. It doesn't help people who are unfamiliar with medical, because the cheat sheet for what is what is on the medical wiki, and if they are capable of remembering a few chems, I don't know why they would be able to remember a naming convention.

Not even all the medicine use it either, mostly just the bad ones.

I want charcoal back :(

Lukewarm take that I like to think is good: game would be better if we had 5 healing chems total

I'm curious who wants em and what they get out of it. Its a hard argument to make for accessibility

I can't tell if you're saying that the old names were less accessible or not.

The three that piss me off the most are because they were commonly used obvious things.
Charcoal
Silver Sulfadiazine
Styptic powder

Back in the day I was talking about the game telling them to get some Silver Sulfadiazine on it, and my mom chimed in from the other room with other burn advice not realizing we were talking about a video game.

It's like if we removed appendicitis and replaced it with pelvorcite. You still target the groin and the word pelvis is a hint for accessibility. No fuck off.

No, I'm 100% on your side here. I was saying that the suffixes were supposedly implemented with accessibility in mind, and its a poor reason.

I'd like it if we had real life names for medicine. It'd be neat.

Somehow the old names were way easier to remember than the 'new' ones. I think they were less generic and more intuitive.

No maintainers have posted in this thread, which makes me hesitant to PR anything. Cobby will yell at me.

I've been angry about this topic since cobbychem put a oar in changing trek-chems, most other tg derived servers usually find a gripe with fermi which doubled it down using its mechanics + bloat (claiming PH input ruins every mix or chem attempt they do anyway, merch soft turned off the mechanic to everything baseline 7). It never previously stopped people from adding fantastical or real chemicals to the game because it was all understood through the lens of science-fiction worldbuilding, but naming convention-chem is literally attempting to re-write reality out of a chemistry atomic table.

familiarity with SS13's futuristic pharmacology sounds like quite the robust tool in one's arsenal, and not a problem that should be solved by simplification, but rather, one's own effort

Alright, to step down from my point to change tact & ask a question to you directly; Is lingua-franca in a primarily english reading and speaking server, nessecary for patented chemical mixes and not generic drugs of mixtured ingredients? (ghetto floorpill 'healing potions' like from the bar, cream, tomato & orange juice, cocktails)

Whether the additional effort was nessecary begs the question, but meeting common ground if most of the old-named chemicals were restored and the naming convention continued through the chem-master, there wouldnt be a nessecity to 'train' those players out of the change when they can mix majority anti-tox chemicals together and make a -iver custom floorpill unless they were just being dishonest in titling their drugs.
