Why is TG trying to look more and more like Eris?

This is not meant as a direct criticism (though you can take it as one if you wish) but the direction sprites are taking seems so stark from what used to be the norm. The biggest difference is the need to be shiny and made of plastic. The comparison with CEV Eris also can't be avoided.

Prime examples are the new crates, the new fire alarms or the new captains gun, while some sprites have their own merits (some more some less) the direction TG has been taking is obvious, now I was hoping for a sort of reasoning of why this new direction was/is needed.

A direction is better then no direction, much better, and this is the direction the art people fell into, due to twat/kryson/posi's tastes.

I do think the fire alarm looks a little weird but that’s partially from being a sprite out of context designed for a different perspective

As a more specific criticism, it doesnt make sense for them to be orange. Should be red like every other fire alarm.

The fire alarms do have better sprites, but at least to me they look way smaller and are hard to notice. I think they could be a bit bigger or have some sort of sign to spot them faster.

I think the art quality has improved but at the cost of the items looking less recognizable as the item they are intended to represent.

For instance the 357 revolver vs the old (I think there was one between these but can't find a comparable screenie):
Image
Image

The one on the top is clearly better art. It has better shading and more detail. But it's not very clear to be a revolver. The barrel is really big, the same width as the cylinder almost. The bottom one you see and instantly know what it is.

The fire alarm is sort of the same story, although that could be rose colored glasses, the size of it compared to the old one, and the fact the old one had those colored blinking lights and was surrounded in red, seemed to me to make it look more like a fire alarm, even if it's a worse sprite artistically.
Image

(for size comparison the bottom sprite is around thrice as big in-game).

The problem with the fire alarm is semiotics. It resembles a ticket machine, slot machine, ATM or intercomm before a fire alarm.

You complain, but the sprite-tainers are the only ones holding me back from making the game look like a sailor moon rip off.

Or a FF14 rip off I haven't decided yet.

Edit: I'm not a spriter, instead I hold goon station spriters hostage in my basement because I add QUALITY items.

The most brutalized take that people miss is the drastic changes to Lavaland recently. The progress of doing the sprites there certainly circumnavigates around the aesthetic of the whole terrain and music which is nearly 10 years old (7 in actuality), leaning more into fleshy scorn-like/part cartoony cultural fads rather than hellscape alien horror with references that aren't placed as a aesthetic addition (like geysers, plants, the deployable base/pods that all came later but were on brand) but rather just wanting to be different things all at once while not updating the narrative of the place and dragging feet over the wallening's promises.

Trying to be many different things all at once is my view of stationside as well, as it becomes less /tg/ with handmade and forgiving low quality charmful codersprites. Enclosed are my key offenders, which i drawn out their problems of neither being game-realistic or topical. I dont really mind bileworms or new mobs to personal taste, they were the better attempts.

Dude the lavaland changes are all fucking sick how can you be against them

Sure, some of them are way too big and stick out into other blocks but that's always how it has been.

Objectively to art taste all together they are good, they are very smoothed over opposed to the harsh edges of what came before. But its not strictly taste, its style, and lavaland is still stylistically archaic as i've already said, mostly wallening project tasks, and it would be no detriment to revert them until the redesign is fully complete. Other contemporary servers mainly in the "Grimdark" category have no issue though consistency if you're going to force a growth of style past codersprites.

If you have a rubbery flesh-cartoon planet, you immediately brush up too in contrast with the plastic eris mining base, which some material difference of a similar plane is fine, contrast to a dark and ashen barrenlands isn't consistent, there is the weak-link, too hastily populated with art assets.

Also the amogus you drew is literally just you hallucinating.

thread is kinda funny because people think there's a coordinated effort to align sprites that is failing. there really is none, it's just that good sprites get merged and there are a few big spriters you should thank for spriting massive swaths of the game and since their sprites look good they get merged. ss13 is just as incoherent spritewise as it was 5 years ago, it just looks better

This is pretty true. I'll never forgive the spriter who resprited my nuclear bomb tower self destruct into the sad little cube though
