New space tiles suck

I don't actually know how new they are, but they're awful.

I get it, someone wanted a new aesthetic, but space tiles are super duper fucking important because they indicate "holy shit if you go here you're gonna get your shit fucked up".

Before it was really obvious where the space tiles were, the new tiles have virtually no stars in them so the majority of space tiles just look like someone spilled black paint on the floor. It's difficult to even distinguish between a hull breach and someone turning off the lights in a room, which is just dumb.

Bring back oldspace.

go to preferences -> parallax -> set to "Off"

I'm actually trying to work this our myself as i also get this bug. What is your os and are you using a VM?

Yea apparently this is a paralax issue, but I just installed the BYOND beta on 2 computers and space looks dead on both. I would be really surprised if this was an uncommon issue.

can you please tell me the operating system on those computers, whether a VM was used, and if they use integrated graphics?

Both are Windows 10
Neither uses VM
One is integrated graphics, the other is a GTX 970

That was because he thought the black tiles he was seeing were the intended space tile sprites rather than a bug caused by parallax scrolling though

Ok new proposal: Disable parallax by default.

I mean I don't know what it looks like when it works but unless people are out there busting nuts over it, I don't think its worth ruining space for others.

Its quite beautiful looking when its working, and has a very interesting effect as you move around and looks quite pretty in transit.

It would make sense to have it off by default for at least the remainder of the time until the issue with it is fixed.

Apparently some of the issues with rendering like this can be fixed by making sure you have the June 2010 Directx SDK.

Some people also had them go away when using the latest byond beta version. There was a rendering fix somewhere in there. Before anyone says anything, that regression with inputs was fixed so yes, the current latest beta.

We're not disabling a feature the majority of people have no problem with because you can't maintain your computer to a working level.

Well that's the thing, I doubt most people would realize they're having a problem. They'd just think our space tiles kinda suck but shitty graphics really isn't something people complain about in SS13 because its just a given.

Outside of SS13 I have nothing but modern titles on my machines and play everything on Very High/Ultra. I built this PC myself and know exactly what to update. To suggest that this is about me keeping my computer in working form is kind of ridiculous.
