tried to improve some things
Image
Image

- I noticed that xenos get assfucked by this so at least for now I've just added the xeno ramp
- I only messed around with the greens and blues a little bit because I can't really tell where to go with them
Image looks ok

- I added a blue-gray kind of thing based on some of ausop's cool shit
- I made the black/white ramp bigger and added Pure Black which I believe should only be used for space and some special things

I think tomorrow I'm going to mess with the greens more and probably the blue-gray ramp too

I went really green heavy this time

I also want to note the camo at the top right I included a version that is unmodified so you can see the difference.

I love the palette and your recolorings, but really? Goon toolboxes? Please no they're like sad dinky little boxes of shame

they're practically objectively a better sprite in every sense

I personally think the lid looks much bigger than the actual box part of the toolbox.

worked on it today
Image
Image

messed around with the greens and the bluuuuues more
there's now an evergreeny kind of ramp so there's options
removed the weird blue in the blue ramp so it's nicerrrrr
feel like i need to mess with the blue-purple stuff and wjohn's xeno ramp a bitttttt\
might need more brown options but time will tell
what'd you think, did you like it, did you hate it?
you're the best you're the best what should I review next?

problem solved...?

you've put in more effort into palettes than i have all these years

but the black white ramp seems to shift from a sensible white to grey and around halfway it just drops into the abyss, specifically the last five, kinda six colours on the left end. I mean you look at your color colours and they seem to have around 6 from dark to light, so I'm not sure how you stretched the black to white scale to that many

its good though

I found that while trying it with a lot of the standard black/grey items, there just has to be enough to be able to pick 4-6~ from anywhere on the scale
and that there has to be a lot of grey-white on the end simply for greyscale things.
Any suggestions you might have to improve it are appreciated greatly

granted it is on a light background but at least the last three, I have to squint to see the colour difference, some of it really isn't all to do with the palette, its also learning how to make do with less colours, even if you're doing black/grey items that you might feel need more darker colours to help in colouring it in

I should mention I used to have a problem myself with using too little difference in darker colours until one day I realized it looked like shit and used up all the korbux I had accumulated to make him remove those sprites that had that problem, you don't want to go bankrupt with your korbux like me

One of the main reasons I'm trying to do this is to encourage making do with fewer colors, but I'm not sure how squashing the grey ramp would affect how greyscaled things like hair and black/greywhite only items would look
I know it looks like a really big ramp but again, the idea at least for now is that you pick 4-5 colors from it and work with those (assuming your sprite is like a grey jumpsuit or a black coat or whatever)

you're probably right about the darker colors actually though I'm gonna squash those I think

yes its just the darker colours

I think getting rid of the third darkest one is the way to go
the pure black on the end isn't for anything but like space anyway

I think I might need to cut one of the weird teal ramps or combine them and split the difference or something

there is a weird jump in the less saturated teal??? ramp

yeah ok I stole it because it looked nice but all of the colors can basically be covered by already existing colors

I forgot but I also messed with the palette a lot over the course of this

Can you make this into a gimp/asesprite palette?

yeah I'll look into doing that

I used my palette again for some oxy tanks and thought about using your palette, then thought about your palette in terms of chanocs attempt at oxy tanks and theres no less saturated dark colours. Worst offenders seem to be the blue, orange, and purple colours.

If your intent is to make ss13 a very vibrantly coloured then dark colours being saturated is fine but even then, they might need to be tuned down

yeah probably
it's really hard to keep track of how everything needs to be

Re: Universal Color Palette(??)

by imblyings
actually no, chanoc just chose the wrong ramps

your palette is still doable for the orange ramps, don't know about the purple, but I had to swap in grey for when I needed a dark blue outline

apart from the purple jumpsuit, all those could be PRd

In case it's useful, here's the colors used in mech sprites for their external plating- more or less, this is just a screengrab from a current spriting project and I forget if I've tweaked anything.

Using grey for dark lines instead of a color doesn't seem like a problem to me though. In fact, I think that should be more commonplace. makes it more contrasty

I think I lost sight of the original goal of this along the way. Fewer colors for more creative color usage. Gonna have to think real hard about my next move

i like the colors used, its that that seem to harsh if they are going to be used along side everything else. also yeah, i gotta gitgud at spriting, i feel like im not making your palette look good

Ripley has more shades than I used and there is one that's a little brighter, I may go back and swap it in.

Mech plating in this project is simplified to using 5 shades max so I can swap color schemes around.

Most recent version of my palette.
Giving up on it for now.
I just don't know where to go or how far to reach to make something that can cover every aspect of this game right now.
Feel free to use it/change it/take over or do whatever you want

I'm making a smaller version of 1.6 just now with the large blobs reduced to single pixels, so it fits in 32x32

Yes. The sprites are all ready to go, including some originals here and there. It's for XTDM's vehicle thing.

restrict to a <256 color palette. ideally 64 but this will require someone to redo all of the sprites (not happening)
