[WIP] The -Lathe Update

Post by paprika » #6911

Here's the idea in a nutshell:
  • - Nerf the fuck out of the autolathe, make it public access somewhere.
    - Autolathe will retain its simple list menu but only produce simple items from now on.
    - Add 'Heavy Lathe' (to cargo) utilizing old unused sprites:
    Image
    - Heavy Lathe will have a queuing system, categories, and will be able to produce complex devices **IN ADDITION** to the normal autolathe items. Essentially, the old autolathe with all the nifty unique complex stuff that was gutted from the autolathe.
    - Protolathe and Robotics Fabricators will (hopefully) adapt the same queuing system the heavy lathe has for the benefit of science as well in this update.
All are welcome to add suggestions and comments here. Ideas, code, etc are all fine.

I will be mostly basing my future coding effort off of /vg/'s protolathe queuing system since I'm not a fantastic coder and would rather update the outdated protolathe since its list is growing steadily.

Closed PR with a bit of code for reference:

Current autolathe lacks cablecoils due to oversight.
Maybe give the heavy lathe gas masks and oxygen tanks? Normal/High Capacity power cells? Toolbelts? Ready-made stunprods/spears?
Give the autolathe cyborg right arms, for assistants to screw around with bots?

You can get full augments with only right arms. Imagine the horror.

What if you give the Heavylathe tank transfer valves?

My concerns with this are: The 'heavy' lathe should be buildable and possibly upgradable using stock parts from Science. You may also wish to replace the autolathe board in tech storage for the one matching the heavy lathe.

Also, Please keep the headsets and newscaster frames.

I dont like this. Makes an excuse for people to not go to cargo and gives an excuse to put ANOTHER THING in, when we have the regular autolathe that is functioning perfectly fine with no complaints

Add queuing, but there isn't any reason to need to put in another lathe.

"Maybe give the heavy lathe gas masks and oxygen tanks? Normal/High Capacity power cells? Toolbelts? Ready-made stunprods/spears?
Give the autolathe cyborg right arms, for assistants to screw around with bots?"

In order: No, Cargo orders them, science/robotics can make them, botany can make them, they're already easy enough to make.

Don't give the autolathe cyborg arms, because robotics should be the ones making and maintaining robots, not cargo.

if anyone actually went through the trouble of clicking the link and looking at the current changes, you'll notice that a lot of things that people usually go to cargo to ask for are being moved to the heavy lathe
its so people dont have to bother CTs and waste materials on stupid shit when they can just use the shitty public lathe

Baycode's protolathe queuing code is bretty good but I'll need help porting it since they use a lot of old /tg/ code that coderbus has updated and replaced since then.

I still like this idea, and hope it can be fed by conveyor belts.

BECAUSE CONVEYOR BELTS GOD DANG IT.
I am located here, lurking in your posts, leaving piles of transparent wordings and being confused. Oh, I also try to map...

This, this is an example of what I leave for you.
Also, these days I mostly play Ursit McStation, mostly because I like roleplay.

It was useless but added character to robotics I guess, I can map one up because metastation has a HUGE open area in the middle of robotics.

Also, this lathe update idea was a little grandoise for me to undertake currently so I'm going to close the PR and reopen it when I've made decent progress and finished my other projects like useless von braun ripoff map #203
