Playing a better Warden

This is not a guide to Warden.
This is a guide to playing Warden in a way that makes the rounds friendlier, more fun, and more positive to all players by better social treatment or better brig treatment.

The guide assumes you have played Security and Warden.
These are my suggestions for playing a Warden that makes time in the brig better for everyone.

This is the sign of a bad Warden.

Basic guide;
Remove detainees from bad security officers. Seperate them and sentence detainees yourself. Bad security officers are the scum of security.
Make the brig a pleasent place to be.
Do not resort to killing unless absolutely required to. The suspect is in your home and they should not be able to kill you in your home.
You are not an antag. You do not have to do anything. Your reward is the story and experience of the round. You are responsible for your own good stories and experience of SS13.


All suspects, prisoners, detainees are players.
They have a right to play the game. They have a right to have fun.
You have a right to remove that fun if they deprive others of it.
Do not deprive those of fun that have not deprived others of fun.
Treat others as you would want to be treated.


Sentencing options:
A stern talking to.
Tracking Implant.
Tracking Implant and Chemical implant.
Timed sentence.
Permabrig sentence.
Labour sentence.

Sentencing information;
Avoid harsh punishments where possible. If a detainee is cooperative, compliant, submissive, and non-violent throughout, I forbid you from punishing them harshley.
We are all here to have fun.
It is better that you trust someone in your mercy and they betray you, than you betraying them when they are at your mercy.
Humanity comes a long way; one day you will be at the mercy of someone. Treat everyone with honour and fidelity.
Punish those that test your patience and humanity harshly. Never anger a gentle and patient person.

Implanting guide;
The prisoner management console can track tracking implants and chemical implants.
Keep an eye on the movement of tracking implants.
Use the camera to track them.
Immediately detain and/or activate chemical implants of those trying to remove their implants.
Raid them if they deactivate cameras.
Message them directions or orders. i.e. report to the brig, I saw you do that come explain yourself, do x or y.

Treatment of antags;
Spoiler:
Traitor;
Do not immediately deprive them of their round because they were selected for antag.
Implant and offer probation to cooperative, submissive, and non-violent traitors.
Imprison or execute violent and/or uncooperative traitors. They are the scum of all traitors.

Changeling;
Implant all suspects.
Show absolutely no mercy to violent or non-cooperative Changelings. They cannot be trusted.

Cultists;
Be supportive during their deconversion. You will eventually detain and upset non-cultists.
Deconvert as soon as possible.
Keep them safe in the brig if required.

Revolutionaries;
Secure and be supportive to submissive revolutionaries. They did not ask to be converted.
Keep loyalists safe and cooperative.
Immediately crush defiant revolutionaries. It is not worth the hassle to deconvert them.

NukeOps;
It is a dumb choice to capture Operatives. They can detonate at any time.
Show no mercy otherwise.

A very good and reasonable guide to playing Warden, if you follow this you will have a much easier time and your prisoners will hate the shit out of you less.

One thing that I always do is demand some sort of explanation for prisoners dropped off to me. If there are no identified major threats such as a cult or revolution and an officer wordlessly drops off a cuffed perpetrator in the brig I will ask several times over the radio as well as asking the prisoner, and if no one can tell me why they are there I let them go. Don't waste my fucking time if you can't be bothered to utter out a single sentence moments after dropping someone off

My input would be to remind others of basic rule of law, even if it makes yourself a target because without a head to act on your behalf, if the captain or anybody is being a blatent condom, the warden is usually the IA agent responsible for punishing them after officers raid & detain. This goes in line with the already established sentiments of everyone else are players, but the station still has guidelines even in the most boring and quiet times such as mulligan and extended that players are expected to follow.

Also often overlooked and not as effective anymore because there're no secborgs, but a tracking implant also turns people into designations for the teleporter.

(just mentioning secborgs because they had easy access to the teleporters of the station and could teleport to any tracked individual with ease to capture them)

Unless it's a declared war ops, I don't think it's worthwhile to change up your game on the off chance of nukies. And if it IS nukies, declared or otherwise, the tolerance level for the Tide should be low anyway. Bolting the teleporter room is usually a good idea anyway, as it offers a private(ish) access point to hack into captain's quarters.

if the the ai opens it without letting security or command staff know, and they aren't grasping the concept that the teleporter can lead to someone using teleportation to piggyback into potentially secure areas to do harm i'm gonna pull a repukan and kill that ai for being shit.

Jesus christ jmad the teleporter doesnt even lead anywhere more secure than the bridge.

Also the AI isnt allowed to bolt down the teleporter, tech storage,(not sectech, obviously it locks sectech), or toxins roundstart on its own initiative, but nobody said you cant tell it to bolt it.

This was how i played security for my first two years here.

Being nice to antags gets you killed regardless of how pleasant you are to them. I can understand being nice to non-antags, but if your a antag you are legally allowed to deprive me of my fun with no consequences, therefore i must prevent that by beating you to death with a baton before you have a chance too.

Other than that, yes be polite to non-antags, they're people too. Act like a antag get treated like a antag still applies, however.

I can understand being nice to non-antags, but if your a antag you are legally allowed to deprive me of my fun with no consequences, therefore i must prevent that by beating you to death with a baton before you have a chance too.

Other than that, yes be polite to non-antags, they're people too. Act like a antag get treated like a antag still applies, however.

Jesus christ jmad the teleporter doesnt even lead anywhere more secure than the bridge.
establish dominance, speak softly but carry a big stick, be the patiant man that should never be angered.

the ai is an all access electronic controlling tool that is controlled by another player.
if they turn against me, they have electronic control over me.

simply put, I won't allow it to stand. the teleporter can teleport straight into the guy I have in permabrig or the changeling I have in the gas chamber, or better yet the deputised assistant.

it's a risk that shouldn't be taken. I do not want a changeling's ally teleporting onto him.

If you were doing your job as warden in the first place, you'd be flicking to the teleporter room camera as your top list of priority rooms to watch anyway, and probably catch them in the act.

I wouldn't give up friendly interactions only because some of them may stab me in the back, plus being betrayed makes for a good story

it's almost like working with the other players in a roleplaying game to tell a good story is more fun and makes you more liked than working to defeat all the others at all costs and be the best at roleplaying

i would rather be backstabbed and betrayed by a thousand bad players than lose a good round with a good story because I betrayed and murdered a repentant and submissive player with good attitudes.

What kind of coward kills someone who is cuffed and wishes to surrender?

I always prefer to perma antags when possible. Hell, I actually HOPE they escape with outside help/storage implant/etc, bonus points if they manage to beat a taunting sec officer to death with soap and a table.

Whenever someone tries resisting out of cuffs I mentally add 2 minutes to their sentence, makes long brig chats a real fun pay off when I tell them.
