Here's a list of relevant* media you should consume if you enjoy Space Station 13:

*relevant being hard sci-fi-ish

Movies & TV Shows Books Games
  • System Shock 1 is/was literally the basis for Malfunction mode and the AI
  • The Marathon Series, Bungie's precursor to Halo, now freeware. Don't miss the unofficial sequel to the series, Rubicon (I like Rubicon a lot more than the original trilogy)
  • Aurora 4x, a punishingly intricate space civilization management game
  • Paranoia
Music Other Media

I'll admit, I'm not as familiar with Star Trek as I should be aside from the most recent movies :/ Hit me with some recommendations.

The Martian is an excellent movie. I haven't read the book.

This short storys pretty good as well, not entirely space station but it can remind you of being frustrated with an AI. http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/features/hopeless.htm

You probably are more familiar than you think :P There are a ton of references to it in basically every sci fi game/show.

Star Trek TNG is my favourite one. Everybody seems to like a different series though, so try a couple of episodes of each to see if it's your kinda thing.

It's been a while so I might be forgetting some good ones, but my two favourite TNG episodes are "The Inner Light" and "Darmok".

The book is also excellent! The movie misses out on some scenes but is overall pretty close to the book.

In my experience, the book's usually better than the movie. I'll have to borrow it from the library or get it on the kindle app at some point.

The atomic rockets site is interesting, I'll have to give it a read through in my spare time

These stray from the definition of relevant, but I would suggest they complement an enjoyment of the game.

Others Will Follow is beautifully crafted and well worth nine minutes of your time if you haven't watched it yet.

Planetes is reasonably firm as sci-fi goes and would seem to warrant inclusion.

Silent Running - the opening theme might give you a nosebleed and the ecological message can be heavy handed, but Douglas Trumbull's model work is up to the standard he set for 2001.

The Black Hole seems often underrated, possibly due to its being produced by Disney. Excellent visual effects again.

Red Dwarf's earlier series.

Since games were mentioned, Alien for the ZX Spectrum 48K. Wander around a plan view of the Nostromo, get paranoid. You can hit the alien with a fire extinguisher. It'll go about as well as you'd expect.

The movie I most associate with Space Station 13 has to be Dark Star. The juxtaposition of the serious mission and the feral crew tasked with it has a deep appeal to me for some reason, and the absurdities I encounter while playing often bring this to mind. If I could convince someone to watch one of these recommendations I would hope for it to be this.

Anyways, I find that Starbound has a similar quirky cartoony sci-fi aesthetic as SS13 does, along with non-human races that actually don't suck.

Even has some elements that were possibly inspired by SS13, as well as direct references here and there.

Yes, the starbound dev is/was/played ss13 and did indeed add ss13 references.

No Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series?

For shame, it has the same irreverence that the typical SS13 round has. The book should be prefered but if you are lazy the mediocre movie will do.

I'm kicking myself for forgetting The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but if you get the chance try listening to the original radio series, the book adaptations lost something in their subsequent polishing and the groundbreaking audio effects add a lot to the atmosphere. The TV series was notable only for the guide entry animations and it's a good thing the film never got made because it would have been a travesty.

Starship Titanic would be another relevant game, come to think of it, though it wasn't especially fun.

If games are being added, Paranoia is pretty SS13ish.

I finally watched space odyssey today.
Spoiler:
When the dude (Frank I think) got spaced I was spooked
Also killing an AI should be more like the movie instead of basing the core a bunch, it'd be way cooler
