Your thoughts on oranges motivations aside, it does present the vote for Ethereals as a genuine choice since its very probable that they won't be added if Catpeople are not removed.

people want to replace a shitty race with races they want. if a player wanted catgirls to stay, but wanted another race to be in, they should have put the race they wanted in 2nd, and keep catgirls in 1st. if they didn't put catgirls in 1st, it's simple. they don't want them.
