in 100% situations, stating the obvious or the hilarity of the irony of the situation tends to ease the situation at hand or otherwise further your goals

for example, take this video. fucking hilarious. lots of people think its fucking hilarious.

see, this only goes so far though, if you make the inference that the cop (or whatever the fuck he his) had the intent to bash his brains in with a tazer, that didn't occur.

being funny makes your situation less shit

if someone pointed a gun at you, and you said "Lucky me if you left the safety on huh?" and he found that funny, statistically speaking you're now less likely to be shot, even if its by a margin of a percent.

the chemicals in your brain associated with things being funny counteract shit like cortisol, which stresses you out. if you associate something funny with something while you are trying to make said something no longer exist, perhaps the reality of the situation will impact you in a signifigant enough way to make you change your course of action

also discuss how people are stupid

(i passed out around this time otherwise it would have been fifty paragraphs you got lukly bitch)

The real trap is not taking anything seriously anymore because humor makes coping with life easier. If there was a hard and fast method, everyone would be using it.
