I tried using a stethoscope to open the safe in the vault today and found it really weird and tedious. I tried to whole right, left, right thing. It didn't work. And the vault keeps spamming sounds sometimes, so is there any specific order or sounds you need to sucessfully open the vault?

The safe found in the Vault can be opened like this:
Use a stethoscope on it.
Spin the dial +, -, +, switching when the irregular sounds happen.
Third sound should be the final unlock.
Open.

It's an ancient arcane secret that people will never find out unless they dig in the code.

Last I checked talking about the precise unlock mechanics is verboten.

By irregular sounds do you mean the sounds in bold text? Or the ones that arent common?

That was a direct wiki quote. A more precise order that (usually) works is this:

• Have a stethoscope in either hand
• Keep incrementing until you hear a tink, krink, or plink
• Keep decrementing until it unlocks
• If it doesn't work, try the reverse order instead (dec first, inc second)
• If that also doesn't work, commit suicide with a crayon

I'm going to have to try that some time. I usually go by +2 -1, but that method takes forever.

I used to do this a ton.

1. Get a stethoscope from the medbay. They'll hand them to you like candy since they're useless.
2. Go into the vault.
3. Click on the safe, and with the window still open hold the stethoscope in your active hand.
4. Begin raising the number on the dial.
5. You'll start hearing sounds that tend to rhyme with one another, for instance krink, plink, and tink.
6. Keep increasing the number until you hear a sound that doesn't rhyme, like krunk.
7. Begin decreasing. You might start getting two sounds but you do the same thing.
8. Begin increasing again. You'll get a bolded message when the safe is unlocked, like Krunk!
9. Open the safe. Make sure you don't accidentally go over one or the entire process will reset.

That last one is wrong too... Krink, and tink I think are both examples of noises you're looking for...

Just take the Atmos approach. Keep spinning that dial until something makes sense. If you can't do it, try it another round. Eventually you'll understand. Just keep spinning until things start to make a bit of sense, then try the other way. Write down the numbers you hit, and good luck...

The safe is pretty boring though. Right now it has a bear pelt hat and a fireaxe in it.

Well it used to have one of the most powerful melee weapons in the game in it, that couldn't fit in your backpack, but WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.

And then there was a replica version of that weapon which only did 5 brute but WE STILL CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS so everything in the safe is boring. Blame Coderbus, blame the Admin Conspiracy, blame Community Advocates or something.

Well, the fireaxe is still a formidable melee weapon...

Just boring. Very boring.

Hell, make it full of random things, bits of clothing you can't get anywhere else and whatnot. Give it a small chance to hold something great if you can RNG this shit. I HATE it when people say in a round 'Oh, the vault just has X in it.'

You don't unlock the safe for the stuff, you unlock it for the adventure. But, yeah, better rewards would be better. Just a bunch of other impossible-to-get clothing, maybe a syndie balloon and whatnot.

I used to get the pelt hat, a gas mask, and the axe and call myself THE BEAR and the axe was my claws. I would never part with them.
Other than gimmicks and maybe murder neither of the things in the safe are that good.

The safe is the most secure place to store the nuke disk, it also makes logical sense too.

I was briefly considering that, but setup time, man.

Not to mention, hatchets, circ-saws, etc can also be used afaik.

The obvious solution is to hide all the tables so the knives wont work.

C4 down two walls; make metal rods from one piece of metal, and build a table frame. Put the other piece of metal on the frame to make a table, and spend half an hour cutting open wheels of cheese for the nuke disk.

(if there are so many that they won't all fit in a locker, move a locker's worth of cheese to another tile and use the pinpointer to work out which pile it's in)

Well, this convinced me to get on spaceman today.

Edit: Vodka, two shot glasses, a russian revolver, and a quickloader for it. Less fun now that they changed the russian revolver to only ever be able to shoot yourself. I guess it's a subtle way to tell people who take the time to break into the vault that they should just kill themselves.

There should be cooler stuff in the safe or atleast more unique items
