I don't expect anyone to read this but I can't help but share.

I usually sneer at the word tryhard. how dare someone try too hard? But I had the biggest asshole I've seen in a videogame today. I was playing the forge gamemode of dst today. I decided to just play a quick game, but I popped into a lobby and all five other players were level one. average level in this gamemode is I'd say 30, I was 26. highest I ever saw was a guy who was somehow level 450, who I must assume has a severe mental disorder since the second highest I ever saw is level 150. only level ones doesn't worry me though. the thing about the forge is that strategy is more important than skill to the point where if every player was briefed on what characters do what and what they need to watch out for, they could probably win the normal difficulty round type in less than 2 hours of practice. Thing is, most low level players only play with other low level players so they don't learn what's good and what's bad. The next thing I notice is that everyone else is speaking russian- turns out only one other player speaks a lick of english. I figure this is a group of friends trying the gamemode for the first time on an empty public server, so I quickly open google translate and explain that I know absolutely no russian and if they want me to leave they should say so now. One guy says no in russian, one in english. I stay and pick woodie. Woodie's arguably the best character. They're not versatile, all they have is that they're tanky and they can taunt enemies by throwing their sentient axe at them (and since this axe is so important for them they're the least versatile in weapon choice as well) but this means that if a large enemy is terrorising the rest of the team I can wear the best armor I can get, the +20% speed boost woven garland, and distract it until they're ready to deal with it. I don't enjoy woody but he's extremely helpful in later rounds since he can turn a fight that was 6 players vs two bosses into a fight that's 5 players vs 1 boss while I run away from the other one.

The first rounds though, don't go so well. first 3 of 12 waves are against a bunch of small pigs that nib at you. Woody has no AOE so everyone else gets swarmed and I get slowly oinked to death. Back in the lobby, nobody leaves. I know we need woody and I know that people can catch on quick so I just google translate a bit of advice for everyone. maxwell can right click with his book to petrify enemies so we have to face half as many, one of our dart users should switch to wilson so he can revive people more effectively since we're going to get scraped up, the fact that we have 3 tanks is bad since there's not enough armor later on for 3 people but we can worry about that then... I can't copy the game's text chat so I don't know what they're replying with, but the one who speaks some english, our maxwell, says he understands. Maxwell's a very boring character to play at first since until he gets the fire staff all he has as a book which is suicidal to use as a weapon except for its right click ability on a long cooldown, and I think sometimes a different player picked up the fire staff. but that russian stuck with everyone as long as he could. yeah with the way he was using maxwell playing wickerbottom would be a direct upgrade, but he enjoyed maxwell and he was good enough that I didn't mention it. Using google translate to explain things meant I only explained the essentials and they got to play loose with their favorites.

The second time we try, we get to the crocommanders on wave 4. The third time we try, we get to the first boss on wave 8, the boarilla. before we get to him I realise I need the woven garland to outrun him and that our maxwell is wearing it. he immediately drops it when I ask for it and I'm able to dodge the boarilla for a good bit while the rest of the team kills the smaller guys. next wave is 2 boarillas that pound us into dust, though.
Next try in the lobby maxwell says he's having fun and we ready up with a similar team. the meta is roughly:
1 wilson for healing
1 woody runner/tank
1 wolfgang or wx as second tank, possibly winona
1 wickerbottom for healing or maybe winona
1 maxwell for dps or maybe willow
1 wigfrid or maybe webber
our team was:
1 woodie who knows what he's doing but is only able to use his axe and can't fill in for other roles if someone is messing up
1 maxwell who doesn't use the fire staff like he should but is good at using his books to petrify or burn enemies
1 wolfgang who crashes twice but he always rejoins
1 wx who apologises when he dies
1 wilson who uses the fire staff and occasionally forgets to revive people
1 winona with a healing staff who is the closest to a meta character we have

And it goes really well! we get past the two boarillas to the next boss and barely die to his first phase. That was the final boss in the original iteration of the forge.
Then our wolfgang leaves. it's a shame, but he was redundant and maybe someone experienced will join. The whole time we were doing just well enough that I felt like if I wasn't locked to woodie or if there were two of me we could win for sure. And the next person to join is level 95! surely he knows what he's doing!
This level 95 player is henceforth to be referred to as douchebag.
The first thing douchebag does is pick wes, the joke character. Why? because we have 3 tanks, according to him. Not only is this wrong because Woodie doesn't have to act as a tank and because one of the "3 tanks" is winona, who is going to be our healer, not only did we get very far with actually 3 tanks last time, but anything subpar in having 3 tanks is nowhere near as bad as having a single wes! Wes can have uses, but a player who does a cry emote when other players die is not a good use of wes. He talks shit and says it's impossible to play with russians, and says of course it'd happen when we die to the third wave (when we got to wave 10 before he came along). I have to ask maxwell for the woven garland again and it takes him 10 seconds to react, causing douchebag to reaffirm that russians are impossible to play with. I then ask for it in russian and get it in 3 seconds along with an apology. The third round with douchebag he instead plays as our wilson, but he taunts when people die and only revives them about half the time. That's worse than our previous wilson who kept forgetting he was the one best at reviving! He keeps telling me I'm wasting my time and that he isn't trying to win. I don't want my bias to get in the way so all I explain in russian is that me and douchebag are arguing over character choice, him being angry with our team and me being angry with his decisions. I'm not actively rude to douchebag, I tell him we did well before he got here with this team and I tell him new players learn fast if you work with them. He asks me if I've ever won before. I have won several times. After a few more rounds of this bullshit though I decide enough is enough and I openly call him an asshole. When in the lobby for the next round, I translate all the nasty shit he said earlier with his defense being that they can't understand what he's saying, and my votekick passes. The last thing douchebag says before being kicked is that I'm no fun. We were doing so much better before this tryhard got here! But douchebag was so mad about our imperfect setup that he decided to worsen it with his actively malicious play. I had to ask myself, several times, why is this guy who gives up so easily so high level? It absolutely ruined my morning and now it's ruining my afternoon since I can't stop thinking about this asshole.
