Tbh I'm 60% sure MSO is just pre-empting the word police crowd by making a PR move. He specifically says "slurs aren't going to be banned just using them to be a dickhead is". This was already the case - the only 'change' is that there's a bit in the rules for admins to use instead of just going by rule 1. Judging by how many people are going "omg wow mso thanks " he's played the fiddle perfectly if my hunch is correct.

I feel there's been a genuine misunderstanding of MSO's intent a bit.

I moderate for the largest Discord/Leddit (heugh) community for what was once a pretty big topic dominated by some of the most cancerous people at all time (which, coincidentally, also derived most of its fanbase from 4chan at the start and switched to a polar opposite audience after a year or 2) totaling around 60k members on the digg side and 17500 users on Discord. Most of the moderation team comes from this 4chan era of culture that is more lax towards this sorta thing, whilst a lot of the userbase ends up being either kids familiar with the rules of other communities or from that... other place where this thing was popular.

Slurs were a contentious topic. Namely, most people in the moderation team wanted to keep them on a base of 'we use them casually and aren't harrassing anyone in particular', but the discussion would come up time and again. The issue is that whilst we can use it casually just fine and in light spirits or for banter, once you say "HEY, THIS IS OK! " you'll attract several people who don't know where the line is and will push the envelope and in general shit up the place with the kind of dumb vitriol MSO showed in his announcement post on screenshots. It's not even political discussion, it's just 'I can say all the edgy shit I want, tg said it's ok, no matter how off topic'. Incidentally, if you want an example of this concept at its worse, join SsethTzeentach's Discord server. Sseth himself is a cool guy with an edgy sense of humor, his *server* is full of people who unironically think spamming every slur under the sun whilst spamming gore constitutes humor.

It's also why I think MSO differentiated between bigotry and 'slur usage', in particular (also refer to the friendly windmill ban appeal) - I don't think you're gonna get banned by saying 'Sit yo ass down nigga' in IC or some shit. The way he's said it really seems more intent on covering unironic harrassment which very much has happened in the Discord and OOC chat and has a very different tone from haha funny banter. Again, we're all here to have a good time, and there's plenty of great insults to use that aren't rooted in that kinda shit.

TL;DR: I get your concern, but I don't think MSO is trying to turn this place into a Tumblrite paradise and pave over its origins. He just wants to cover our collective asses to get rid of people who think a 'lax atmosphere' means screaming NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER until you can't see OOC chat and pinging someone with 'double glazed jew' on Discord thirty times.

But you can already rule 1 people who spam NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER in OOC thinking they're super hilarious. That avenue has always existed and nobody really contests those bans except maybe the idiot who caught it in the first place. I'm not worried at all about MSOs intent, I'm more worried about the message that a specific type of banbot is going to get from this.

I will never understand the argument of "we don't need this rule because we already have this rule" as anything other than scraping the bottom of the barrel for arguments

There were clearly people just casually inserting their "I hate niggers" into IC and OOC conversations without really spamming about it. Sometimes it's just low effort edginess and sometimes it comes from a real place of hatred and you'll have people popping off in game about how they hate trannies/jews/niggers often without any real prompting. It's easy to ban someone for spamming a word over and over, but if someone is just having a in game rant on general radio about it you can bet a rule 1 ban is gonna get spicy because they were previously told that's allowed. Now it isn't and it has been made clear it's not welcome.

I want to sympathize with the rare funny racist gimmicks that'll be killed as a result, but there's enough people unironically defending their shitty attitudes these days I don't think the server will suffer that much for removing the worse of them.

This, this, this so much this. If you think you're funny enough to pull off ironic racism for comedy, you're almost certainly wrong. The one in a million that could do it right will find plenty of other funny RP gimmicks to do, and the rest, well, good riddance.
