especially you imsxz, you fucking new ass fuck face you spit on the grave of /tg/station if old players could see people like you claiming things in their name they'd fuck you so hard you would forget your own name, rule 3 was literally the golden standard back in the day

you're a fucking joke
kors a pretty old player and he likes me. kevinz, yakumochen, zaross, laz0r, forcefulcjs, stickymayhem etc are the boomers that everyone talked about when i started playing, and they play literally the exact same way i did. not sure which old players you are talking about
I've been here nearly a decade, I'm not like you. Whenever I did unstoppable murderbones, I used the space created to do interesting things. The value of being unkillable isn't killing everyone, it's having a blank cheque to create any story you want for the station. I did wacky shit like making meatspike hallways of victims and taunting security while setting it up, killing the captain and taking over the station under threat of violence, goading centcom into a war or converting the whole station to the syndicate. The murderbone wasn't just to rack up a body count, it was to make a narrative happen. The only reliable way to do that as antag has always, unfortunately, been to kill the dozen or so robust competitors to your murderthrone and then go ahead with whatever gimmick you wanted to do.
I intentionally lost countless times. I came to the bridge for parlays knowing it was a sting operation, I die intentionally to antags all the time (When you've played for long enough you can pretty reliably know who's antag and who's not just by watching them for a couple minutes, but that meta knowledge is unfair to use, so I take a dive most of the time to avoid that), I sacrifice my round to create interesting situations, I throw antags back out into the round as security with tracking implants. This is all in the spirit of doing the only thing I care about, which is driving narratives.

What did I enjoy about playing on /tg/? I enjoyed when everyone shared this mindset of creating opportunities for the most interesting story, instead of playing Trouble in Terrorist Town in Space.

unfathomably based btw, loling at low tier murderboners like imsxz and naloac trying to harken back to the “good old days”
fuck you i had lots of gimmicks, just not sissy roleplay gimmicks

also i had tons of rounds where, like sticky, i would only kill the threatening people and then mess around with complete freedom instead of just murdering everyone. and also died intentionally

but u guys were barely active when i played so i guess u wouldnt know the real me :(

Yeah I don't remember imsxz as a murderboner. They would occasionally kill the entire station, but it was typically with a semi-funny gimmick.

I forgot about that.

I never said I liked being here. I just am. Manuel is the last sane RP server I can find that doesn't make me want to stab people or nap all day. It's very hard to find a happy medium. I don't always enjoy it, or all the interactions I have to make, but it's home now. Even if it's a broken down home with dysfunctional residents (IC, OOC some of yall are great.)

I found a place where my AI is appreciated, and that makes me happy.

One of my long time friends said he'd been playing this game where he was running around causing trouble and showed me how to photocopy my butt, steal the clown's shoes, and escape down a disposal loop. The absurdity of it was enough for me to give it a try later on down the road and I was too intimidated about being good at any of the technical roles so I decided to start as security and learn how the combat worked so that when I did my other roles I could defend myself and be competent all in one. I like to solve puzzles so it was good fun trying to gather up enough info to definitely say "yeah this dude is a changeling!" and cremate them without someone bwoinking you.

Nowadays I enjoy being a part of the collaborative and wacky story of a round. There's never a round that goes by without something unique and interesting happening. I don't play nearly as much even though I swore to myself I would get hooked again if I came back. Now I like to tinker around with the systems that help people do those unique and interesting things more than I like playing, but it's still a great time if you don't get stuck taking it and the people here too seriously.

I miss old stun combat; it made the tots that could robust an entire station that much better knowing that their entire run could get fucked by one stunbaton or taser shot.

The old combat wheel was better than the current combat modes as well imo.

The game held your hand less too. See old wires vs new wires.

Generally, a lot of the game's complexity seems to have been sidelined in the name of being easier and more accessible.

Not really the best fit to reply to this thread since I originally started on Luna Legacy Baystation, made a new account when I lost my kiddy email info, and only came around TG pretty sporadically between the two accounts until recently. But, always knew it was around and had some serious respect for the server/administrative tools and coding powerhouse when I was looking in from the outside.

When I originally checked it out I realized it could be fast paced, most projects were speedy and easy and there was plenty of room for them, it wasn't a toxic hole in the ground, and there was a ton of space to get that wacky borderline unbelievable RP fix while feeling like you were actually on a giant metal deathtrap. Was pretty engrossed in other servers at the time though.

Manuel's coming and its rules got me to swing back around considering it looked to be the copy pasting of the open ended sensibility of Goon RP rules and all the possibilities of TG. Liked the idea of more consistent characters and more chaos at the same time that other servers weren't quite offering.

I'm always looking for more of that Sealab 2021 kinda experience and/or the space to emulate it, figured Manuel might get the environment for me to do that right.

Pitched my tent from there, even though I feel a bit remiss about not poking people more to explore where those rules came from, and what kind of environment they can foster, it was definitely closer to that early in its life (that chill RP'd murdery chaotic nonsense, its a little lighter on the murdery chaos now, like plasma floods).

Still feels like it meets all the criteria it did when I first tried it though so that's cool, changes to the code didn't have to reflect on the culture and nothing polarizing enough happened to sink the ship.

Never really fussed about changes too much though things are always moving I'm too busy just trying to stay ahead across multiple servers. Always looking to mix things up obviously, so I don't mind having to do something a new way.

It's over imsxz. I agree with you, it was a beautiful time. SS13 was beginning to feel like a competitive game almost. Sybil and Bagil were full every day, it was wild. The game had infinite possibilities then.
Too bad the admins and coders don't agree with us, they seem to want MRP. I really don't know why? We have Yogs, Bee, Fulp, Paradise, Monkestation, Pariah. Why do we need TG, the OG, to be MRP too? And why is having short rounds a bad thing? That seems to be a complaint from RPers, that the rounds were too short. Most of us loved that the rounds were short, since we didn't have to dedicate a large chunk of our day to SS13.
Meanwhile if you play on MRP servers you're expected to play out TWO WHOLE HOURS just for ONE ROUND. Some admins even get mad if you call the shuttle early for no reason without ahelping.
I don't understand why; TG was much more active, both the server and the codebase, when it was competitive LRP just like in 2015-2020.
Time to move on my friend. I'm pretty much done with video games really. The intense fun and sheer chaos that was TG back in those days, very few games come close to even approaching how amazing it was.
Shoutout to Whoneedspacee for his legendary Tritium speedrun video, it's what got a lot of us finally interested in Atmos (shoutout to the coders who added the new gases)

It wasn't complexity by design, it was just complex because the UI for those thing was shitty and nonexistent.

Old stun combat was designed for a world where the game lagged to shit and the ss13 code was even more "robust" so it was fine to have a super clunky combat system.

however when eveyrthing else starts to play more smoothly, having a one and done combat system doesn't work as well and it starts to feel very out of place with the rest of the game.

Citrus Coder Gremlin and I don't agree on everything

But we do agree it's agony when people talk about the good old days but don't remember stuff like the very serious debate over whether MetaStation could ever truly stand equal to BoxStation.

Sure, there are a lot of changes I think have been harmful, but BOOMER MOMENTS aside, a lot of you can't even imagine how much more playable this game is compared to how it used to be.

tl;dr some of you zoomers never flooded engineering with plasma because BYOND had a fixed limit on how often you could click, including in the genuinely terrible and unresponsive pre-TGUI popups, and it shows

Or, oh god, how plasma's flashpoint used to be 100 degrees lower than it was supposed to be.

People actually making an attempt at social RP. There was a time when people would actually try to fucking ask for things instead of just breaking in to a department to get it when they weren't immediately able to procure it.

I'm not really an old player (played on tg in like 2016?) but I really enjoyed being "good" at the game. doing shit like insta choking people, tabling, resting to dodge taser bullets, abusing soap to grief security every round. I was a massive shitter, but so was like half the sybil cast back then so it was whatever. nowadays I don't like a lot of the systems and I think the game is too slow

I have decided in my auspices to not read more than the first half of page 1, so this'll probably be a lot of repeat:

I do genuinely enjoy modern /tg/. It's fun. I enjoyed /tg/ in 2013, too, and /tg/ in 2016, and /tg/ in 2019, you pick it, whatever, it's always been fun. Different times had their own metas for what was fun, though, so as I speak, don't take this as me saying "blahblahblah new /tg/ sucks grrrr"

I have a soft spot in my heart, as many have said, for old 2014-era stun combat. It just hit different. Stungloves, stunprods, tasers out the ass, disarming and stealing someone else's gun, parapen, it just hit different. Before, if you were trying to lose someone in the halls, standing next to them if they had a stun in their ass was a death sentence. Tasers, you learned to juke them because they were slow as balls, and it was like a game with sec to see how many bolts you could dodge before you went down. These days, I can basically juke a person trying to shove in melee range and be completely unaffected. Sometimes they'll catch you, but compared to the old days? It's a drop in the bucket. It's still fun, movement now is to me its own great flavor, but the old flavor is something I miss too. It was a lot of cancer, but it was /our/ cancer, y'know?

I also just enjoyed the old gang of people that I had gotten used to. Back on Badger and then Artyom, it felt like a weird murder famiout ly that you just knew. Highpop was 30 players in-game, enough to feel like a station with people on it but not so many that you didn't know who half the people were, and before there were roleplay servers, good old Artyom and Basil were the de facto mini-ones. I like how it is now, too, it's fun, but a different flavor, like I said, and I miss the old flavor sometimes.

Also, the cheese? One of my favorite memories was a cult just about to summon in atmospherics, CentCom announcement goes out, all hope is lost, they've bunkered in too well --

And in from the corner comes the RD, the final minute, with two bags of holding, what's he about to do, and --

The singularity is going in the opposite direction. But there's not enough cultists now to sacrifice, so yay?

It was cheese, it's understandable it went away, but God, was it hilarious.

Re: Older players - what did you enjoy about playing on /tg/?

Post by Anuv » #652328

I commented earlier but here's my effortpost. It's been a couple years since I played regularly and I still think about SS13 and /tg/ often. Still, to this day, there is no game like it and nothing even comes close. TTT can scratch part of the itch a little but there's just so much more to the game than anything else out there. I truly don't know if a successor will ever dethrone SS13 considering everything that this game offers.

For my own longer input, a few things came to mind:

-The pace. There was nothing quite like going ham on a truly insane round. I've heard that a lot of recent changes have been put in place specifically to slow this down. I get the intent, but I think the speed was always part of the draw for the really fun and chaotic rounds. Yes, some rounds were just plain stupid and too wild with the insane greytiding, but a lot of the rounds were crazy for non-stupid reasons. The gradual removal of the wild combat just really started to pull down the game imo, to the point that you no longer felt capable of feats that a reasonable player should be.

-The playercount. This was honestly one of the things that I missed the most towards the end of my run as playercounts pushed below 70/60. It's probably not an opinion held by the majority but I really think that +90 player Delta matches were just the best, lag or no lag. There was something so fun about running into a full department and having people everywhere. It really made traitor rounds that much more intense. And knowing that nearly a hundred other people were playing on the same station added such a sense of scale that lowpop/restricted pop matches couldn't touch. There were also some antag gimmicks that depended upon lots of other players, and it was more thrilling to have an army of validhunters all trying to hone in on you.

-The freedom. It was really great to just do whatever you wanted to do. I understand why MRP rules exist but not having the threat of OOC punishment looming down upon you for the smallest (or not-so-small) of infractions was fun. It led to a lot of spontaneous and hilarious moments. Obviously some people were given this little bit of freedom and took a mile with it, but I feel like a lot of regulars understood that fun was more important and were able to do a lot with it. That was always fun, to have other players who really understood the spirit of the game. I think that's what separates a dumbass from a good player. Not skill or time spent playing, but just really understanding what makes SS13 fun (not always winning, and trying to maximize fun for everyone). I tried CL on CM13 for the same reasons and had a lot of fun for a couple months.

-The murderboning. I recently read in another thread that murderboners would kill pop and drive away players. I never found that to be the case. I usually found that it was inspiring to see someone so effortlessly dispatch dozens of other players. People sometimes got mad yeah, but it seemed to me the majority always found it engaging and fun to watch. There was absolutely nothing more satisfyingly than dying or ghosting at round end and seeing a solid circle of ghosts circling you too. Dchat was sometimes salty, but it was fun to take part in the "audience" and chime in about the situation.

Understand that these are my own opinions, and you can disagree, but I think the proof is in the pudding with what recent playercounts and feedback posts are like. I wonder how things would have gone if Basil and Sybil were forked into two separate playstyles, one older and one newer. Able to satisfy both parties. But alas.

Errorage called everyone shit and retarded, and fucked off to a different forum with his australian buddies and turned it into a quake forum, taking all the data/everything on it with him. Or something like that.

I think there was also an ultimatum involved and a very weird, if short, series of revisions where everything was replaced with 'roros'.

Ironically Leo, that is an argument which cuts both ways, and can lend more legitimacy to such complaints... id est, it's been a long-term and real trend that's been recognized by many people over the years in very different contexts, rather than just a handful of random people being unhappy.
