"How many hours have you wasted?" thread

i remember a while back admins were able to tell people in OOC how many connections they have to the server. assuming each connection is a round, and an average round is about 50~ minutes, you can roughly calculate your playtime (at least on /tg/) in hours with ([# of connects] x 50)/60.

so basically, this is kinda like the notes request thread, where you ask admins to tell you your number of connections, except that instead of self-incriminating ban notes you just get disappointing in how much time you've wasted with your precious and relatively short life on earth. you just post in the thread and hope that an admin is willing to take a second to check the database or whatever for you.

I'll go first: how many server connections do I have, admins?

EDIT: Liam Lime made a tool that allows you to check it for yourself, so you don't have to beg admins anymore.

Fair disclaimer that not every connection corresponds to a full round played, due to stuff like reconnecting (especially if your internet is shit or you're prone to crashing a lot) as well as leaving and then rejoining a round manually because you got bored and wandered off. Depending on if you only have to reconnect once every couple of rounds or if you find yourself reconnecting several times every round, your "true" playtime might be lower.

That being said, I just passed 5000 connections the other day, so much time wasted

Could be because I used to play off my phones Hotspot all the time before I moved. Idk how my ip would change lol.

At my home we didn't have a router and had a 60gb plan with Verizon I had to use my phone as my wifi for gaming and didn't really lag much at all.

Shaps touched on this earlier but it's more likely a lot lower of "time played" per connection than even what was mentioned. People reconnect all the time and the number is probably pretty inflated. Whatever connections you have, you could probably estimate that you probably have in reality a lot less play time. It's honestly extremely hard to calculate play time unless each individual connection history in analyzed to see the day to day connections. I know for some people with bad internet, they would get upwards of 60 connections a day when in reality 10-15 is more likely. The database also only started tracking connections on December 18, 2012 I think (some date in December 2012). TL;DR these aren't really super accurate at all. If you have like 3400 connections in reality it's probably like 3400 give or take 200ish depending on your internet history and connection habits. And even then, everything I said could be inaccurate too

Yeah, it's not exact at all, that was never the point. A rough estimate is more than satisfactory!

That being said, I apparently have about 1.5k hours. And that's after you round down, and generously, at that.

Don't forget to do the other fun calculation! Divide the number of hours by 40 to get how many working weeks that is, and then multiply by an appropriate wage you'd get wherever you live!

I made a thing in like 5 minutes, while waiting for someone to return from the toilet so we could play not-ss13 video games. You can use it to check your connections for yourself: How many connections do I have?

I'm also very surprised by how few connections I have - not the 16, that's actually roughly 8x what I'd have thought, since I only played two rounds since rejoining. I only have around 450 connections overall though

I guess my prime was before logging was made.

The wage number comes from List of minimum wages by country from the Nominal hourly US Dollar column. It'd've taken way more time than I was willing to invest in this silly thing to adjust for every possible region. Instead, you have the estimated number of hours there, from which you can calculate the cost at whatever wage you wish.

The percentage of time comes from the first time you connected - specifically the "(X days ago)" thing next to it. It's basically just the estimated number of days you played, divided by the number of days since your first logged connection.

Also, just for reference, the highest logged number of connections beats 10k connections. So far, there is only one person who managed this. Having more than 8k connections currently places you in the top 10 slot.

It might not work if you redirect your browser traffic via proxy or VPN, if you have some dumb corporate network settings, if you use ipv6, if someone's doing a MITM on you, etc. Basically the network rules you use to connect to the website need to be the same as the network rules used when connecting to byond.

If it doesn't work and you'd like me to look it up and send you a PM with the output, I can do that, assuming the number of requests is low. I'll also only do it for the requester, I won't look up other people without their permission.
