I never did it for ages but then I realized plasmaprods were fucking hilarious and have started doing it just for that.

Why not make stun prods a back item like spears instead of a concealed grief weapon?

Allow them to stun if thrown at people like a spear to compensate for this as well, at least you'll be able to react if people are walking around holding them or have them on their back visibly rather than "heh looks like you picked the wrong person to try to attack buddy you're getting stunned and looted/dragged to sec"

For the sake of balance, stunprods should be able to be placed in your backpack.
The crew need an easily accessible stun weapon for modes such as cult, clock cult, Rev etc etc the list goes on.
The issue is simply people pre-making them as a form of defense. It's technically power gaming, comparable to slapping the ablative vest on at round start.
Then again, I've seen virologists grab yellow gloves, full tool belts, sunglasses, a flash and a water bottle full of water at round start "just incase anything bad happens".
Power gaming only breeds more power gaming. Eventually the game would boil down to spending the round preparing for any occasion, so that when John McTraitor pulls out a syndicate pistol in the hallway, his limbs are ripped off before he can say succumb.

It's almost like those modes should have mode-specific methods of surprising people to help you convert them.

Alright, alright, Time for a Canadian to stop this argument from boiling over.
On one hand, Having a stun weapon available for new people/People who have time to craft is a decent idea, and it's much better than having everyone get a taser, and it feels a bit less cheap than being soaped into submission,as the person has to put in minimal effort, and has to actually hit you. As i said, better than a craftable taser being around for balance. Would you rather be tased out of the blue at a range, or have a chance to bugger off.

On the other banana, Stunning is obnoxious as hell, and usually leads to Unavoidable death scenarios, as well as the fact that the stunPROD can be shoved into the backpack makes it just a reskin of the stunbaton. Brilliant. Mabey if it was much harder to craft, or took longer, or couldnt be hidden, that would make it fair and balanced. Plus, it makes most antags which arent stun immune, other than wizard, a joke.

In sense, these have upsides and downsides.

I'd argue that you should only make these things when its going to shit, not before

Telebaton never runs out, so there's that.

My proposed balance change for flashes is that they stun you instead of confusing you, but you keep the things in your hands.They wouldn't be effective as a 100% disarm tool and would simply stun people in place and blind them for a few seconds rather than making them drop to the ground after someone men-in-blacks them.

I'll usually give a lawyer a pair of sunglasses when I play warden if they ask for them. It's not like it'll do them any good against tasers or stun batons.

Changing stun prods to not fit in bags isn't going to fix it, it's just going to make people carry disassembled prods. Flashes or a new ghetto taser that only gets one stun before falling apart and needs to be reassembled with a recharged powercell might be better.
