What happened to gender reassignment?
I was talking about gender reassignment and hatchets in ss13, but I noticed it's gone.

Did something break or did sjws get upset and it got removed or something?

some guy ahelped that he was getting molested when it happened to him (he wasnt) and admins/coders at the time kneejerk overreacted by speedmerging a removal of the surgery

There was something like a 6 page dramafest first, it wasn't out of nowhere

I remember that drama, I thought it was unnecessary to remove it but everyone was on the war path so it was impossible to talk about the subject in a rational manner.

Man, that sucks. Can't it be reverted?
It used to be pretty hilarious to do sex changes with hatches, especially when greytides shat up medical.

One guy got mad and all the typical complainers agreed with him so it got axed.

The only indication I can see as to why it was removed was that the admins considered Gender Reassignment to be rape, or at least to be unwanted ERP.

How about let the person being surgerised choose their new gender? If someone surgerises you and you're not into having it changed, just select the gender your character is already.

there is no greater sin to a volunteer admin/GM tham creating unnecessary work and headaches

I genuinely have absolutely NO idea why it was removed, oranges says it's a "burden" to admins but as far as I can tell the only issue was that somebody abused the feature. Abusing features happens all the time on the server and instead of removing the feature we ban the person who abused it, why was the reaction to this any different from the rest?

why leave a feature in if it's solely going to be a ban trap and doesn't actually add anything useful

It's great for disguises... but people used it to griff. Solution? Make it ungriffable.

Because unlike other abused features this always turns into a moral/political/cultural issue when an admin rules on it, and it isn't any fun to be at the center of that when you're just trying to play a dumb atmos sim.

At this rate I can see ahelping next time I get my tail removed and not getting told to shut up.

I don't really care about this surgery but hey: This is a surgery that was used once every 6 months, and every fucking time it was used it generated a huge dramafest regardless of what an admin ruled. And honestly it barely made a difference being removed.

know whats funny? it was replaced with the ability to make gender change potions with pink slimes. fun fact, gender change potions are instant use, just click the guy with the potion you can mass produce and they change gender. how is this better?

I'd usually be the first to outcry about this but really, what does having gender reassignment add to the game? If it just creates drama and has no real relevance to gameplay then why bother having it at all

There's a lot of people on /tg/ who have a "it's not rule breaking so you have to be okay with me doing [X]", and if it makes some people uncomfortable and they complain, it benefits them and the admins by removing it - they don't feel uncomfortable (for whatever reason) and we don't have to listen to the ahelps complaining.

If we were removing something critical to the game, like clowns or atmos, then sure, I would disagree, but this is just a surgery that was only ever really used to piss people off. How many people actually in character wanted a gender change for a significant reason?

It's not about being a "political thing", it's just "admins don't want to deal with that shit and it does nothing anyways so who cares about its removal". I agree that ahelping it is retarded, but I don't care about its removal when there's nothing positive that comes out of it anyways

I gave Mai emershun a gender reassignment once. Then I augmented her so she could say she had a hydraulic cybersong. Then The station exploded!!

Isn't the codebase full of things that fit this category though.

Also honestly gender reassignment is probably less annoying than getting all your limbs and/or organs removed.

If a traitor wants to spend their round genderswapping people instead of marauding the halls murdering everyone, more power to them. Our wonderful admins having a mental breakdown because someone changed someone's sprite is stupid. Get your moral judgement shit outta my 2D spacemen before we turn into Goon and start banning people for saying rape.

The issue here is not with the admins having a moral issue with the genderswap. The issue comes when people ahelp because they are mad they got their genitals mutilated with a hatchet, and the fact that it is a sexual organ makes it more difficult to place in terms of proper escalation when nonantags are involved, and lots of people have very strong opinions on the issue.

At the end of the day it caused more problems than it ever contributed fun, and while i would be inclined to tell people who have an issue with the surgery being done to them to fuck off and deal with it IC this will not stop the volume of autistic screeching that will inevitably result.

For this reason alone it will probably never come back

If someone were to ever strap me down and start diddling my doodle I'd kill them the first chance I got. Bam, IC issue resolved. The admins don't need to step in except to tell the doodle liddler to fuck off for ahelping after getting dunked or confirming that sure I can kill the diddler.

Anyone arguing the morality and legality of genital mutilation in a video game for high school children and special people needs to do some serious reevaluation. This is coming from a man that got out of bed at midnight to beg a child with aspergers for his internet autograph.

Really though it was a rarely used feature that constantly sparked controversy and if it hadn't been removed most people wouldn't even notice it was still there.

I wouldn't say the reason im arguing about this is because I used the feature, in fact I only used the feature a couple times, but it gives the players o p t i o n s and it's more about the principle of why it was removed.

It's ridiculous how incredibly strongly people argue about for something 99% of them never used and would never have used if it was left in the game

The only justification this feature had for existing was the fact it existed as a option.

Space Station 13 is a game defined by the things you can do that no other game lets you. More so this is known for the little things.

I'm not claiming to be for or against this, but I fully understand why many people would be very against its removal as removing it may be seen as akin to violating one of the things that draws people to SS13, that extra level of complexity and interactivity.
