By making such personal connection between the PC and pre-war times I feel like they are focusing on ancient history rather than the post apocalypse.
My main concern is that Bethesda might forget that Fallout is supposed to be funny and cast the post-apocalypse in a pitch-black humorous light. Fallout 3 was rather serious, which is one of the main reasons why I liked the not-so-serious and often downright silly Fallout NV better.

But judging by that final teaser they showed, they have it covered.

It's cool to have the option. At least now I can really carry a full arsenal of energy weapons around. Keeping my fingers crossed for the Gauss Rifle to return in some way or shape.

Gauss rifle being a sniper only weapon was a massive disappointment considering it was my favorite weapon from fallout 2. Although even worse was the unarmored tribals from point lookout being able to take a round to the face with minimal damage. That whole expansion pissed me right off

Gauss rifles are orgasmic.

And I'm fine with them being sniper-focused.

Everything with this is pure yes.

You can give Ronnie a dress, though.
I mean, she won't wear it, but a dress. Console commands and she'll actually wear it, too!

(I still take Cass and ED-E, though. I'd go with Boone, but he attacks Legion on sight. I like my reputation neutral or better, thank you very much...)

FO4's dog, Dogmeat, is confirmed to be essential though (even on Hardcore, possibly?), so I know who I'm vertibirding with. It's set around the War time, though, so I doubt there'll be any returning companions.

FO4's dog isn't Dogmeat, it has a customisable name, the first time you see it in the trailers it's just called "Dog", they simply chose dogmeat.

Also I don't think it's set around the War time, the Sole survivor is such as they are the only one to leave Vault 111, not to mention the muties wouldn't exist at war time.
(Unless you mean the original Brotherhood vs super mutant war, then maybe, since the other "War Time" still has the Brotherhood as the American Military sealed up in a vault, they took time to form the Brotherhood and actually leave their vault(s))

I'm expecting some time between or after 2161(F) to 2281(F:NV)
Actually, I'd like to see a Fallout set in 2377, which is the time Vault 101's PA system claims the USA will be habitable again (Hilariously this makes the Lone Wanderer 100 years too early to leave, honk)

also cool ass map showing Fallout locations in their Real world locations: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mi ... GYzdDqm_wA

Didn't the robot in the trailer say that 111 has been out of it for 200 years? Fallout 4 probably takes place not too long after 3 and NV.

Would be interesting if they pulled something like that one quest in Skyrim that has you meet who is suggested to be your character from Oblivion (or at least that is what I'm told, I have never done the quest myself), only it's the Lone Wanderer or the Courier.

I'm surprised more games with sequels don't pull the "Oh there's a savefile from the last game on here... mwhahahaha time for fun"
While I highly doubt it, I'd love to see them load old characters from previous games like that in F4.

I don't think Skyrim actually pulled any save data. I'm absolutely not sure, I read somewhere that there is a character in that quest who is some kind of eccentric spirit or something, who is suggested to be your Oblivion character who became a god or something weird like that. Apparently the entire quest is kinda weird.

I would probably know more about it if I actually played the quest, or finished Oblivion.

It would definitely be cool if Fallout 4 did something like that with actual save data though. I always carry an arsenal of energy weapons around.

Spoilers ahead

The Canon ending for the hero of kvatch in oblivion is to complete the shivering isles expansion and become the new incarnation of Sheogorath, the deadric prince of madness. It is more like ascending to godhood, and the quest involving Sheogorath in skyrim happens if you have save data or not

Fallout 1 and 2 had some connections (they take place a few decades apart so a few NPC's are still alive and the hero of the game is a descendent of the hero of the first game).

I like how they haven't had any real strong connections since then in terms of plot or setting. There's more of a sense of wonder and exploration of a strange world when you don't know who or what you might bump into, or how their feelings towards you might be. The Brotherhood of Steel, for example, vary a lot in terms of how friendly or antagonistic they can be towards you game-to-game. You can't see that armor and immediately assume friend.
Remie Richards wrote:FO4's dog isn't Dogmeat, it has a customisable name, the first time you see it in the trailers it's just called "Dog", they simply chose dogmeat.
If you don't name him Dogmeat you're not doing it right. Dogmeat has been the companion of the wanderer in every game except New Vegas, where he got swapped for Rex.
The Dogmeat in FO3 is a descendant of the original Dogmeat from FO. The Dogmeat in FO2 isn't.

Again if you have to take any humanoid companions with you though you suck shit and should just go stay in your fault and cry yourself to death.

He's Dogmeat. You can name him whatever you want, but that doesn't change the fact that he's a wild dog companion in a Fallout game and, therefore, Dogmeat.

Honestly if they want to switch it all up I don't mind.

Fallout was originally a turn-based isometric CRPG.

It's now a first-person shooter with RPG elements.

It stands to reason that the underlying game system for the first style of game might not be the best fit for the second style of game. If you've put enough hours into Fallout 3/NV you will notice very quickly that some of the skill holdovers from days of yore either don't work very well or work way too well.

I've been playing Fallout since the first demo of it dropped in PC Gamer and I welcome change.

I ran into a bit of a wall where I had a crack squad of infiltration experts who normally operated by sneaking into places and assassinating everyone.

That stops working towards the end of the game.

Everyone becomes fucking psychic, and on the off chance you manage to sneak up on one of these mentons people become magically aware the moment you kill someone.

It's a really neat game otherwise though, very underrated. I'm a big JA fan too though so.

You did way better than me. I officially suck ass at the game. I hit a brick wall when I got to that one map where you had to get into the super mutant base with four guard towers with supermutants armed with Browning M2s posted on each one. Being the dumb shit I am I didn't really have any characters that excelled in sneak and well, with 15 round bursts and 40-50 dmg per round those browning M2s tore through my squad like a knife through hot butter. Might give the game another shot though.
