spooky until medsci but now it's just boring, i can't go anywhere because meme monster lingers in the same spot for 10 minutes and i have to hide in a locker like an assistant who just got caught breaking into eva. i like how it's not just the world v. ayy lmao and everyone is out to kill you except for that one guy who got rekt near the beginning. the synthetics (YA ALWAYS KNOW A WORKING JOE ) have to be my favorite enemy, mainly because they actually wander the place instead of building a campfire a few feet away from whichever locker you happen to be hiding in. xeno is spooky as fuck whenever you're sneaking around it but if you're in tight corridors *cough* medsci *cough* then it just becomes a snorefest until the xenomorph spots you from ten rooms away at which point he wrecks you because there's no way you can escape that fucking thing.

p.s. turn subtitles on. the game's volume is to the point where you can barely hear the dialogue if it's turned down too low but if you turn it high enough that you can hear people talking the rest of the game is deafening. example: "something's got me, hasn't it? what's got m- *SPIKE* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" and the music composer accidentally trips and presses every button on his keyboard.

And it's pretty sweet so far. Plague Knight feels a lot more OP than shovel knight, though. That one potion that lets you steal heath basically means infinite heals.

Been playing helldivers, and holy fuck is it a blast. Top down two stick shooter with a surprising amount of gameplay depth. Not to mention the whole atmosphere of the game is starship troopers meets team America world police. You stomp around the galaxy bringing freedom and liberty to the other races via overwhelming firepower

No More Room in Hell for Steam is quite good. It started as a Half-Life 2 Mod but is now totally free to play at Steam. It basicly making you experience the old zombie movies again, they actually managed to make slow zombies scary again. Cooperative game with up to eight humans, winning is really hard.

finally learning dwarf fortress, pretty fun. also looking to get into a nice MUD, think im gonna try aardwolf.

I played that game once.

I GOT STUCK IN A RAVINE FOR LIKE AN HOUR AND WANDERED ITS ENTIRE LENGTH UNTIL I COULDN'T GO ANY FURTHER UPON WHICH I WANDERED BACK AND FOUND OUT THAT THE EXIT WAS THAT I HAD TO CLIMB THROUGH A BROKEN WINDOW ON THE SIDE OF A BUILDING, RIGHT AT THE START.

ALL MY MEMORIES OF WANDERING OUT AWAY FROM MY HOUSE IN MINECRAFT AND THEN GETTING IRREPARABLY LOST AND CRYING ARE COMING BACK TO HAUNT ME.

I like to say it ends pretty well.

Early chapter 3 is definitely a pain.

Is it good? I'm really close to pulling the trigger on it. I have not played enough Endless Legend as is and buying more expansions is probably stupid but goddamn I just love the aesthetics and feel of this game too much.

After binging on Phantom Pain I'm moving on to Satellite Reign and revisiting more Payday2.

The first half of chapter 3 is garbage filler. Once you return back to the Monster Lord's Castle it picks up again.

Just finished SOMA, great game, brilliant story.
The ending though, woooooow.

I look forward to playing SOMA when it goes on sale and my brother buys it, just like A Machine For Pigs.

Do it. I'm in awe at some of the things that happen, especially the ending.
I will be raving about that ending for months.

I'm also looking forward to hopefully seeing Depth, the SOMA movie which also came out on the same day (yesterday, 22nd) which is all prequel-y and stuff.

from the gameplay teaser I saw a few weeks ago I think I could already piece together what the big twist is going to be, but I hope the developers did that deliberately to hide the real twist

if you want a good twist you hide it behind a few more obvious ones

Been playing Dying Light, since I finally have a machine that can run it. It's fun. Not terribly original, but it combines two of my favorite genres--freerunning and wanton violence--pretty well. Drop-kicking zombies off the tops of buildings or into spiked fences is so satisfying.

Also got back into Rimworld recently, though Jesus Christ, my first two colonies this time failed pretty spectacularly, mainly due to a bunch of joining wanderers who had WAY too high expectations.

Man Rimworld is great. I would buy it if they would put it on fucking steam. As is i am stuck pirating the latest release. What is the newest version? Maybe i will jump back in

It looks interesting but also I'm aquaphobic so it also is potentially borderline unplayable for me based on what I've seen in some screenshots.

Played the first half hour maybe. Decent horror, one really disturbing part and I may have guessed a major plot twist, time will tell. Not super scary but still fun and interesting

Been playing Lakeview Cabin Collection. Really fun, there's a lot of little things and secrets in there which is really good.

Someone told me Until Dawn was available on Steam and I flipped out.

I wish it wasn't PS4 exclusive. I watched the story instead of playing it myself for that reason and now even if it comes out on PC or something it's not gonna be as shocking.

Taking all the shocks and twists out of a horror movie kinda cripples it

Horror is a really hard thing to produce genuinely. In my opinion I would hazard to say that horror literature has the easiest time of it because writing has the most direct line right into the mind of the reader. There's less filter there. Less noise in the transmission from intent to purpose.

Film and video games have to contend directly with eachother and it has been a sort of arms-race for genuine spooks since before any of us were born. We get different "flavor of the decade" stuff but it's ultimately all derivative. Ghosts, monsters, slashers, zombies, aliens...pick one and season it with some jump scares. The problem with making a new scary thing is that your audience has likely already built up a sort of tolerance from digesting all the media that has already come before whatever it is you're about to make.

It's like...you can appreciate a joke you don't laugh at. You'll think "Oh I get it" and the level of humor registers somewhere to taste.

Horror either scares you or it doesn't. And if it doesn't, then it has failed completely. There's little room to appreciate a horror-thing that doesn't illicit at least some fear.

A joke you can at least appreciate for the wit behind it.

A scare that doesn't make you feel afraid just reinforces how jaded you are and this sense like "wow what kind of pussy would be afraid of this?"

That and the twist is something that horror NEEDS to have. The less your audience sees coming in horror the better they like it. It's why Scream was so popular, because it made fun of how stale and easy to call things could get. In other movies you can kinda get away with the twist being given away (The Usual Suspects is arguably better after you know the ending since you know a lot of stuff to watch for) but if you already know every big secret about a horror movie the only reason to watch it is literally just to see people die/see messed-up stuff, which is kinda weak.

Predicting the twist in a horror movie is the worst most fucking disappointing theatrical experience you can have.

When you're wrong you're pleasantly surprised. When you're right you want to flip a table over and storm out of the room.

I have a p.bad fear of drowning but when I couldn't figure out a puzzle (it was all my fault, but still, it was a bit of a detour) I was just jumping around under water looking at things.

Plague of shadows was a great experience and guiding that goofy plague knight through the same levels with a totally new head to toe character made things feel new again.

Deadpool is back on steam. I missed it last time and snatched it up. Fun so far, it definitely captures the feel.

the game looks kinda lame so yeah, it is exactly Deadpool

Meh I enjoy it. That's all that matters to me.
