Bottom post of the previous page:

The game is really schizophrenic when it comes to humor. There's typically a really serious story, but absolutely ludicrous side material and bonus stuff you can find that is bizarre.

Metal Gear Solid 5 looks like it's going to be the darkest, most serious entry in the entire series...

...but it's still a game where you can capture goats and send them back to your base. It's still a game where you can spin your character around in a circle so much they get dizzy and vomit all over the floor.

Between GZ and gameplay previews I'm totally sold on Phantom Pain, looks like it'll be a blast.

IIRC it has to do with the individual purchasing power in those countries. If they priced the games closer to what they cost in other countries they wouldn't sell very many copies.

People are way overreacting to that review. It wasn't even that harsh on the game, though it did come off like the guy rushed it out and didn't play the game very well (not developing Mother Base)

To be fair, reviewers only have a few days to pump out a review.

So, they just take the path of least resistance.

8.5 isn't a bad review though.

If you're actually using the entire scale like you're supposed to, an 8.5 means it's a very good game.

There's no reason to be upset here.

If you absolutely must play this at launch your bare minimum primer is thus:

Beat Metal Gear Solid 3
Beat Peacewalker
Beat Ground Zeroes

You have nine days to do this, as of this morning. You better get to work now.

I don't think there's ever been a precedent set like this before in the history of gaming. You really will not have any idea what the fuck any of this is or what is going on if you don't do at least that much before jumping into this game. For a game about sneaking around and choking/shooting people Metal Gear is ridiculously heavy on plot. Jumping into this game without having experienced the plot of those games will ruin this game for you, but also retroactively ruin those games for you as well.

We're talking about something akin to jumping into A Song of Ice and Fire at like...book five, having never read any of the books before and just having a vague idea of who and what all this shit is.
Don't do this to yourself. Don't do this to the games.

But seriously, like...

...no really fucking seriously...

This is the endcap game to a series that spans NINE OTHER GAMES

If you decide to jump in NOW and make this your FIRST game you're a fucking idiot. This is not the place to start. Do not pass go do not collect $200. Go play the other ones first and get to this one when you get to it.
You wouldn't decide to start reading a series of books at the last book just because it was the newest one, would you?

If you do that, here, just because it's the newest one, you're an idiot.
You're a legitimate, objective, total fucking moron. It's going to spoil the entire series for you.

EDIT: I'm trying to think of how you might just skip over the games even and just read spoilers and it still doesn't work. A huge part of the games is self-referential gameplay. Spoiler alert but
Spoiler:
There's even a segment in Metal Gear Solid 4 where you replay a portion of Metal Gear Solid using the PS3's built-in PSX emulation that's revealed to be Solid Snake having a nightmare about his past experience at Shadow Moses before you replay that same segment of gameplay in the updated Metal Gear Solid 4 engine
...and you wont understand or "get" fuckery like that, that is likely to take place again when (SPECULATION ABOUNDS)
Spoiler:
I wouldn't be surprised if the final portion of Phantom Pain is some kind of flash-forward to the original Metal Gear game, where you are playing as Solid Snake again.

Fuck it I don't even really know

If you've waited this long to actually play one of these games it's already too late.
If you're only just getting into this now, when this has been a pretty popular franchise at the forefront of Konami's stable of titles for the LAST SEVENTEEN YEARS...?

Like how do you completely ignore this entire thing that has been happening for almost twenty years and only perk up your ears and decide for yourself "Now is the time for me to jump in on this franchise" when it's been made widely known this is probably the last game in the series.

I've only played MGS 2, 3 (best game), a tiny bit of 4, and Ground Zero. Do I like, reeeeally have to play Peacewalker.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pantsu

by Timbrewolf
A lot of characters critical to the plot of Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain are introduced or featured heavily in in Peacewalker.

Paz, Chico, Huey, and Kaz are central to Peacewalker, and don't appear in MGS3 at all.

Kaz is introduced in Portable Ops.

Peacewalker is honestly really fucking important, despite being a handheld game. Ground Zeroes is a direct sequel.

SPOOOOOOILERS
Spoiler:
Metal Gear Solid 3 is the introduction of Big Boss
Portable Ops picks up the story a while after the events of MGS3 with Big Boss in an American prison facility in Cuba
Peacewalker picks up the story after that with Big Boss gone underground as the leader of one of the first PMC's.
Ground Zeroes continues the story after that with Big Boss leading his own private army with nuclear capabilities.
Phantom Pain begins after that private army gets decimated by the Patriots and Big Boss wakes up from a coma after 9 years.
So yeah you if you just skip from MGS3 to Phantom Pain you are kind-of missing everything between Big Boss being the hero of the United States Special Forces and being someone there was a huge conspiracy to murder.
Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiind of important.

Non-spoilerific but Jesus fucking Christ I don't know why people argue about how canon Portable Ops is/isn't when it's vital to the storyline. A lot of shit does not make sense at all if you skip from MGS3 to Peacewalker.

Nah you don't NEED to play Portbello Ops, that was the only MGS I didn't finish, on account of it giving me bad hand cramps trying to play it and I didn't get lost in Peas Wagger by skipping it. Pretty sure there was in tape in PW that explains how Snake meets Kaz and other stuff like that if you're all 'bloo bloo but how!?'.

I would disagree entirely.

Play the games, Do not watch some LPer do it.

PLAY THEM. The experience you get going from 1-4 is central to being invested to ANYTHING that might happen in the plot.

Yeah I guess Peace Walker and Portable Ops are semi important too, they're shit though so just watch the story for that I guess.

Game releases 5 am BST 1/9, which is GMT + 1 for all us Europoors. Afaik it was supposed to release in new zealand 5 hours ago and it still hasn't on steam.
The release is a mess.

Also PSA: If you have Nvidia you can now download and install the pre-game driver update for TPP from GeForce Experience. You should probably do that tbh.
