(I heard from a description that it isn't a straight hearthstone rip at all which is good, but... hmmmmmmmm)

Watching the announcement and seeing the crowds reactions made me remember my first time having sex.

A brief fleeting moment of excitement followed a cry of disappointment and anguish.

I'm don't think that making their first major game release since CS:GO (6 years ago) a card game based on their existing IP was the best idea, especially when there are already like 3 or 4 major ones on the market already.

Still, it's good to see that they're making games again.

It's gonna be a shitty Hearhstone ripoff with micro transactions.

Remember when Valve made good games and updated the ones they already made?

The part that hurts the most is that the initial headline i read was "Valve announces new game" and my hopes soared before I realized that it was A) a card game and B) based on fucking DEfence of the Autists of all things for a solid double whammy of shit.

yeah and then they realized they can make way more money by not doing that
tf2 is a dead game and there's nothing left for them there
i dont know about csgo but i assume it still receives patches and new content
dota gets frequent updates and large amounts of support for it and the only paid content is entirely cosmetic

It's going to end up like Heroes of the Storm or Battleborn. Especially if it's dota shit

Nobody wants more of that, market is oversaturated already and unless they have some truly innovative and great gameplay in there, nobody is going to play a few weeks after release
Of course if you're selling lootboxes and hats you only need a small amount of very rich idiots who buy your shit so they might not care

The annual virtual books + collectable baseball gamer cards aren't just cosmetic. Sometimes you pay to vote on a cosmetic watch the most popular character get a remodelling. Sometimes you pay to watch a number get higher so reward tiers are unlocked like kickstarter: without a confirmation date or clear definition.

Oh and then there's the measured gambling of calling if a game is going to be in the bag. Which requires you to not only win but correctly guess if that's the case. I wonder how many players can manage the win part.
i know you're just being pedantic but none of those things actually affect the gameplay in any meaningful manner. everything that is actually strictly related to the game's functionality is free.

not like blizzard needs any help in doing that themselves though

what happened?

What do you mean what happened? They are literally making millions and more millions with the ">moba" and will probably make even more millions with ">card game". Capitalism and a company being a company is what happened.

Saying that focusing on profits = bad products is a false equivalence.

Sure, they're cashing in on a trend - but so are many games that are generally perceived as "good". Half-life for example did not have any completely original gameplay at all.

i'm sure it is

i will continue to let people who enjoy mobas enjoy mobas while acknowledging that it's probably the genre that has been the least fun for me though

I will always dislike dota shit because dota killed warcraft 3 custom maps

And for that alone, it deserves to die off itself

To be fair it was the community being shit more than anything else

Hosting-bots spamming just dota basically meant nothing else could be found, and thus it died
Also dota sucks to play and represents the worst things about every genre it takes from, so I can see why it's popular

the cool part about this new online trading card game is that because it's going to use steam's inventory system, you can actually trade cards unlike other similar card games

It all exists to fill gaben's moneypit now.
