Call of Cthulhu: The Official Mouthful Title

Post by Anonmare » #407008

Call of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game is an upcoming role-playing survival horror video game developed by Cyanide and published by Focus Home Interactive for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows. The game features a semi-open world environment and will incorporate themes of Lovecraftian and psychological horror into a story which includes elements of investigation and stealth. It is inspired by H. P. Lovecraft's short story "The Call of Cthulhu," while also being an adaptation of the 1981 role-playing game of the same title.

It is planned to be as faithful to the tabletop game of the same name as they can reasonably manage.

  • Currently known features so far:
  • Sanity system, with a phobia subsystem. Phobias are context sensitive, so if you hide in a closet a lot while a Deep One is going through the underwear drawer you may develop claustrophobia - making hiding hider and bad for your mental state. There's also necrophobia and aquaphobia as some other known phobias.
  • Hallucinations and warped perceptions of reality when your sanity is harmed which will affect your investigation - your character will come to wrong conclusions about a piece of evidence or believe something to be true when it isn't.
  • Gameplay focus will be placed upon avoiding combat, but it does exist - but isn't recommended. The devs have stated there will only be one gun and a finite, non-replenishible amount of ammo, other weapons will be of the improvised variety and scarce.
  • RPG-style skill tree but no combat skills (to my knowledge) will be implemented, the skills will be focused upon the kinds of investigations you can perform or for opening up new avenues of exploration such as lockpicking. Skillpoints are earned through detectivework, collecting evidence and producing conclusions from evidence - emphasising the combat avoidance.
  • Conversely, learning too much about the occult during your investigation can equally be as bad as it is helpful, knowing more about the mythos can help you fight against it but also tells you how pointless it is to even try to.
