I recall this being pretty spooky and it's a free hl2 mod.

Silent Hill 2 is still my favorite of all time. Eternal Darkness was great as well.

I usually don't play horror games because jumpscares are the worst thing in any video game to me, but alien isolation was a fucking blast.

backlog of spoop games:
>machine for pigs
>penumbra overture/black plague/requium/necrologue
>metro 2033
>dying light
>darkwood
>scp: containment breach
>outlast
>spooky's house of jump scares

suggestions on which to do first?

Darkwood is a pretty good game, more dreary atmosphere and an oppressive environment and no retarded jumpscares.

SCP:CB has gotten a lot more stable in the last year, and last I played I could run it at around 60 FPS without crashing. I'd give it a shot, especially since its free. Jumpscares galore sadly.

Machine for Pigs is scary until you realize how dumb the AI is and how you can run through entire levels. The first half of that game was so spoopy but then I realized I could shift+W entire levels and the second half took me under two hours to complete.

Dying light is scary only in how horrifyingly shitty the early game is and how terrifyingly awful the end of the campaign is.

Play Penumbra Black Plague, that one gets some spoopy.

A good really cheap indie spook is "Anatomy" by KittyHorrorshow. Slow buildup of spook, the game equivalent of a perfect B movie.

Games don't feel to spooky though.

ive heard a lot about anatomy and i might try it, also im realizing now that playing cdda with the audio is actually kind of spoopy, hearing the background wails and sirens while fighting zeds really brings in the unease even if its an otherwise unscary game

also pkp your new avatar gives me a headache pls stop

SOMA is very good, a horror game from the creators of Penumbra and Amnesia. If you don't like getting chased by monsters it has a Safe Mode that approaches the game from "what would all these monsters do if they were docile?", which lets you focus more on the narrative and atmosphere of the game. It still has plenty of mindfuck left even without the aggressive AI.

but it isn't SCARY except when you're in the evil DARK OCEAN SPOOKY SEGMENTS otherwise it's just a body horror movie. It's better Sci Fi than it is horror.

Unironicaly though Subnautica is scarier than SOMA simply due to the scale of the game and the speed at which the Leviathans move. Combine that with the stakes (your whole inventory) when you die, and you're a hell of a lot more scared of that ocean spookum than you are of SOMA's spookums that just make you restart their specific segment. I know I sound like an asshole about this but most horror spoopygames have no sense of consequence or drawback, such that actually getting caught by the spookum has no drawbacks. In Soma, I was purposely running up to the monsters just so I could have a closer look at their models, since I knew them catching me would just bounce me back to the beginning of said monster's segment.

Visage went early access recently and is pretty damn scary from what ive seen. Call of Cthulhu releases on the 30th, so its just in time for spoops.

it's almost like scary is largely subjective, I nearly shit my pants on quite a few occasions in SOMA

ironically Subnautica prepared me for most of the agoraphobia that you get near/in the abyss so those sections weren't all that scary to me, but god damn I do not want to play through Theta again
