An excellent follow-up to Undertale, Deltarune introduces a party system in combat.

Lots of mysteries to be had and cute things to hug. What did you think? Did you beat the secret boss?

(somewhat common) HOT TAKE:
undertale is a really great game that has a good story, gameplay, and sense of humor but unfortunately acquired a bad name through its fandom

i'd play a sequel.

yeah I hate to break it to you but character development from "nothing personnel I'm only not eating you cus your mom... has spunk" to being completely normal party member is a bit forced to me. I kinda wish it didn't flat out say "your choices don't matter" until later. I almost had got it at that point but I'd wonder how long it'd take for me to realise that.

If there's one thing I hate in vidya (and of course there's more than one thing) it's flat-out telling the player "naw, we were too lazy to implement multiple endings and real consequences, but we're pretending it's ARTSY and EDGY".

Wasn't the whole point of undertale that it had multiple endings and consequences

I Know the point is that it doesn’t. I feel it would benefit if worst character didn’t literally tell you that. game is a bit too blatant about things.
I do *not* think undertale was about having a choice. It’s basically impossible to get genocide if you dunno how and it always forces you into pacifist.
I remember playing mother 3 and thinking “this dash shows how pointless overworld encounters are in earthbound since they were unavoidable.” I think that it being bullshit to dodge works in benefit of the theme, but it didn’t have to flat out say it.

The thing is, you can dodge encounters, you just have to MGS it.

Not on all of em but yeah I’d like to think it’s intentionally really hard though.

Really really think barney saying it was a bad idea as I love to say, it’s like if in lisa rick said “wow, you’re going to be a horrible father” when he dropped buddy in the intro. I guess whether people get it or not doesn’t matter though. Ironically this game makes me want to kill everyone far more than undertale did. Was very disappointed in the first fight against the checkers guy who totally shoulda been named chiptune. After using warning 3 times it loops with sarah getting an attack boost and I thought “hmm maybe I can boost sarah until they can deal more damage than it can heal” turned out they only get the attack boost once and my attempt was in vain

The first time you see certain enemies they [!] you and run at you

Usually for the purposes of tutorial/exposition.

After that you can MGS them, with the exception of the very early game enemies.

Not a sequel

It's only a sequel in the same sense that Bioshock: Infinite is a sequel to Bioshock 2.

Same metaverse but completely separate universes.

It did not need to be a series.

It's straight up a waste of time, effort, and talent if this game is a Second Undertale.

I really do believe the entirety of Delta Rune is some kinda fakeout and I'm gonna be pretty disappointed if that's not the case.

I agree but I believe an exception can be made for this game. Obviously Toby isn't too lazy to make multiple endings, as he made 3 different endings for the first game while doing 90% of the work on the game himself over the course of multiple years. It's pretty obviously part of the game's theme, considering you literally can't even kill enemies. You stay at level 1 the whole game no matter what. I am going to stop typing now because I have only now realized I am unironically discussing (and semi-defending) Undertale on an online forum GOODBYE

Hey dude, it's okay to like things :D

You're a way bigger pussy if you dislike it (or pretend to) entirely on the basis of others liking/disliking it.

I don't think it's going to be episodic, I think it's just a demo that's not being called a demo.

I hate the stupid croc and can't wait to genocide trapboi.

Statement by dev Toby Fox

http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1sqn3p9

Tldr;
-Deltarune is a demo much like the Undertale demo was. Full game will not be episodic.
-Toby wants to put together a team to help dev this far more complicated game
-Virtually none of the game outside the demo is completed aside from general story and some music
-Full game won’t be out for probably several years

finished this the other day and to be perfectly honest I kind of agree with the twitlonger thing toby posted about how the battle system had issues, how undertale's Act mechanic fundamentally doesn't work with a party system (imagine if chrono trigger had to come up with different dual/triple techs for every battle) and how if there are not multiple endings then the whole Act/Fight system is pointless. because battles fucking suck in this just with the amount of time each one takes, and there are few enough enemies that it gets fucking tedious as all hell.

doesn't make it lazy though (literally every single thing is interactable), just a fundamental flaw, that I don't feel bad pointing out because he also pointed out that it is a fundamental flaw

also fuck the chiptune-ass music, there's probably going to be some kind of story reason why half the areas sound like they're being played on a game boy but the drop in quality between the regular songs and those is huge

total verdict: it's overrated as shit kids. battles are either baby shit or bullet hell muscle memory with rng mixed in sometimes, which is basically just "replay this 200 times until you know the pattern", the story is LIDERALLY out of a kids' cartoon show, with undertones of LE EDGY STORY YOU HAVE NO CHOICE WE'RE SO SMART XDDD
