What species/class do you play as, and if you have a consistent strategy, what is it?

I like to play as a kobold berserker proficient in short swords. I worship Trog because fuck magic. I basically spend the first half the game eating corpses and stockpiling rations in the temple for late game. All the Trog perks are pretty stellar for a little kobold. Sadly, the deepest I’ve gone is The Vestibule of Hell where I’m nearly always tossed into the Abyss to wander in deadly chaos. I have possessed (I think) two runes at most.

When I first started I played Spriggan Assassin, then I found out how good Enchanters are at setting up stabs. It's been Spriggan Enchanter ever since.
I like Xom, Ashenzari, Dithmenos, and Yogaz. I've wanted to try Nemelex but the whole card thing always seems like it doesn't work well with what I'm trying for.

I've entered Zot's domain a few times, but Fire Orbs wreck my little Spriggan without fail. Still need to find a way to deal with them.

I played alot of air elementalists until mephetic cloud was removed.

Then I was playing nemlex elven transmuters, until both the card god and that subspecies of elf was removed.

Then I moved onto naga transmuters.

I think I picked up the three or four orbs, but that's it.

I am very upset to hear that this happened. That spell was dank and I've literally died choking to death on my own cast of it. I've been concerned about the development of DCSS, I feel like in the last 6 years they've really streamlined it in ways that I find questionable. The inventory stuff used to be a lot more fun in a quirky way.

Maybe I'm wrong and it was kept and evaporate potion was removed completely, then M.Cloud was nerfed and removed from the starter spellbook.

Regardless it was a decent change because you no longer just ignored levels 3-7.

if you guys dont like some of the removals check gooncrawl, they do a good job at sticking to the idea of "crawl but not removing stuff"

it's easy to lose patience in the boring early levels and fuck up
then you get into the real shit and it's easy to die

The game changes over the years for the better or the worse (most of the changes are positive though)

I have 15 runed like 6 characters or so. Hill orc fighter, minotaur fighter, High elf fire elementalist, human paladin, demigod air elementalist, draconian transmuter.

I also 5 runed a xom demonspawn once when Xom was still a real a-hole. I couldn't continue that one because Xom just kept irresistibly confusing me at the worst times and I was running out of health potions to counteract that.

I really like the sprint maps, they provide a real challenge while cutting out the boring parts.

I did demon monk for the longest time and prayed for wrist plates for a free shield

Deep Elf Wiznerd.

Could go lhouge, I think it's spelled and just banish people left and right. Pray to RNGjesus and go deeper down to get a nice weapon and leave game start. Expect to die a lot though.
