Yeah this part seems the oddest to me about it but it works really well.
You get one Rundown every...month and a half or something? Two months?
Each rundown is its own set of missions with their own pre-planned maps and objectives and PLOT
The layouts for each individual mission are static but the placement of pick-ups, enemies, some mission critical objects and stuff is randomized.
There are unique twists to each one so they're kinda like mini campaigns in a sense. Episodes that form a whole chapter.
There's zero progress to the game outside of trying to complete the rundowns while they're up.
You don't level up and unlock guns or gear or any of that; which is kinda refreshing in a way honestly.
The rundowns will have unique pieces of gear that pertain to them and are only available while that rundown is up.
It's all incredibly straightforward. You turn the game on, pick which mission of the rundown you want to try, pick from the gear that is available during this cycle and go.
There're questions of sustainability and stuff. Since each rundown is new map layouts, some new enemies, some now world objects, some new weapon assets and stuff, it's a lot for them to be creating each cycle only to toss out when the next one begins.
I wonder if at some point they'll open it up and let you pick from different previous rundowns or if they'll settle into a rotating schedule where its cycling through a big collection of rundowns they've amassed.
These are the Payday 2 devs after all so I expect at some point we'll see premium weapon packs or perk decks or something pop up. It's still early access so who knows.
For now it's pretty cool just as it is. Spooky multiplayer horror stealth shooter.
