What is this game, market it to me. I see it's single player only, which is a good sign. How complete is it. What is the end goal. Is it like minecraft survival.

Malkevin said the game is more fun if you cheat the oxigen, which is imminently a turn off for me, because I don't really enjoy games where you build for the sake of the building. I need some mechanics to keep it going.

I've bought too many games recently as well.

You crash on a planet.
You want to get off that planet.

Life on that planet is absurdly deadly and you get all of two lethal weapons, one of which requires getting close to pretty deadly wildlife to obtain ammunition for while the other breaks after repeated use.
The point of the game is trying to get along with the wildlife, surviving and scavenging until you can get the fuck out, and not wasting resources. Resource scarcity means base building should be limited, and at least in my case migration is more common than expansion.

Also, shit can get scary.

If you have even a mild fear of the Ocean the game will be rough. It is fun all things considered but until they fix the fucking renderer it is just too fucking broken for me to consider playing again.

I fucking love Ocean.

But I'd like to know how the game plays. Are you just gathering materials and building? How is exploration and discovery? How deep is PvE?

Gathering, researching, building, occasionally repairing or breaking things. Running like hell more often than not, until you've got a farm going.
Exploration requires packing food, preserving food and planning oxygen - or bringing a sub, which is generally the better choice if you can keep it powered. Scenery porn is abundant, and underwater cave systems can grow absurdly large and complex.
PvE is decent, I guess, but I generally don't play this type of game very much. I think the most fleshed-out animal is the Stalker right now, those purple-yellowish fish who bite you unless you feed them Peepers, at which point they bring you scrap metal - which they collect and fight over, and occasionally lose teeth to (which are another resource).

There's a couple of small islands to explore, as well as the flaming irradiated wreck of your busted ass space ship.

The seabed varies from 20m to 900m deep, and the game world is something like 5km x 5km.

You can go as deep as 1700m in the caverns, mind you.

Get ready to duck and stay well clear of the ship.

Also, collect some lead.

Most of the time you'll be treated to a pretty explosion, occasionally the game is a bastard and you find your survival pod is actually within the fallout zone. Hope you didn't want kids that weren't horrible mutants.

Just a warning. Don't go to the Aurora without a Seamoth.

Whatever you do, DON'T go to the far edge of the map where the land starts to slope down into darkness and open water. Unless you like being eaten.

git gud
also git a propulsion gun, fire extinguisher, laser cutter, welder, plenty of meds, some food and water, and keep your inventory mostly free because there's a surprising amount of partially useless but still pretty loot.

Crafting menu could be more transparent. I spent 30 minutes diving searching for titanium and magnesium and whatever the fuck you need to make a repair tool to repair your pod, before I learned you actually need to refine the salvage in a different menu.

It took me forever to find out that you can obtain filtered water from bladderfish because I didn't realize you can pick small fish up. I actually had to quit my first game because I was about to die from dehydration, and start a second one.

Also where do I find bigger sections for my habitats? Right now I only have tubes.

I think you need to search for the debris and scan it with scanner. I unlocked some new blueprints this way.

Yep, you can find the main hab parts either in cave (hard to get to), or an island (piece of piss to get to)

I see stalkers pick up debris all the time, maybe one of them absconded with ye booty.

Personally I just built a small habitat under the pod that I am slowly filling with wall lockers.

I mean, I can forgive the game for not having much tutorial beyond the very start, since it's still an early access title and I can just look everything up on the internet (there actually already is a Subnautica wiki). But it's definitely something they should look into before having an official launch, not everything is very intuitive.

I reinstalled and i am still having the issue of textures rendering in my face every time i turn around, even in the safe shallows. Like when i first see them they are the low res "from a distance" textures and they have gaps in them where the blue skybox can be seen, and they slowly load in to the proper textures.

how much VRAM have you got?

I have the same issue, the game loads its chunks gradually with different levels of detail. Unfortunately the way the seabed geometry is compressed at lower LoD makes it not match up at all with higher LoD, causing those weird gaps.

Or at least that's what I assume is happening. It's not something you'd notice as much if the LoD dropoff didn't start so close to the player.

I think there's a pipe end point structure.

Not that it matters, if you're in shallow water hook up a solar panel and the base's life support produces air for you. I don't think pipes actually serve any practical purpose.

You can pump air out of your base with pipes
It becomes air bubbles you can refill your O2 at so you dont have to go back to base for an air refill.

Not that you'll need to, with a cyclops or something around to get you air

Until said vehicle is out of power, of course.

I can only ever see external air piping be useful if you've got vast amounts of growbeds a reasonable distance from your base, and who does that.

Sunbeam is a meme right? There's no way they just gonna pick me up. They probably are going to crash and burn, or get shot down by yet unseen force like I was, right. It's 1.2km away, my feet hurt, should I really go there? Is there a point, without spoilers if you please.

The site you are about to visit has minimal hostile presence - those annoying crab things - and many rare resources.
Just don't expect cold beer and warm food when you see Sunbeam.

I was at the landing site shortly after the announcement and built some exterior growbeds to keep me supplied with food and water.

Be slow and silent and they won't care about your presence.
Alternatively, try investing in the shield upgrade.

It's definitely worth it to go there for the Sunbeam alone. Just remember to bring extra water and salted food, and a medkit for emergencies. You can even bring some extra titanum and quartz if you want to build a small habitat. The distance isn't that bad, with the seaglider you'll be there in a minute or two.
Spoiler:
You can also drop a beacon if you want to return there later, that's what I did so I'd be able to find it back.
