WHO ELSE IS PLAYING THIS SHIT?

What's it about?

It's soccer with rocket cars, basically.

It's a totally simple concept and I only got it because it's currently free on PS4, but holy shit I am having so much fun.

Cross platform play with those who play on Steam too which is cool.

I'm kind of sad they dropped the "SUPERSONIC ACROBATIC ROCKET-POWERED BATTLE CARS" title, but then again adding a 2 to the end of it would've been kind of cheap I guess.
I'll probably pick it up once I have some money to throw at it, but having played the first game, I already know it's going to be fun.

This looks identical to a UT2K4 mod I played ages back, I forget the name.

I'm also going to post this to further explain my disappointment at the name change.

That mod would be Carball, I was one of the developers for it (although I only did car textures)

Whilst rocket league takes some obvious inspiration from it, it is a lot faster paced, and a little more chaotic, but it's just as much fun

Easily recommend to anyone, there is a reason it's top of the steam sales right now and their servers were getting MASSIVELY overloaded with players because of popularity

Does anyone know if there's a way to make a party with a Steam player if your on PS4 and visa-versa?

That'd be a no, I checked on the steam forums about that, however they are adding that in the future, just no idea how long

Was hoping people would pick this up. I've been waiting to grab this on Steam. There is cross-play between platforms, but setting up a party and stuff cross-platform don't work yet.

Pretty sure we could just all crowd into Skype and create a private game though.

I want to get better before I try my hand at ranked, but holy shit the amount of rookies (and even semi-pros still) who haven't figured out that this is a *team game* and sometimes hitting the ball every time you get a chance could maybe fuck up the game is staggering.

I am shit at it

I played with two chums and being able to scream and yell at eachother in Skype saw us quickly go from fucking around to consistently blowing the other team out. There's a ridiculous amount of strategy to this, but yeah:

Playing against teams where all three players are chasing the ball like idiots all the time and just smashing into it wildly every chance they get to make any sort of contact is hilarious.

But when you're good, playing another team that's good, it gets crazy. The game has stupid depth.
Try going for a header, but corkscrewing into it. You'll put a bunch of english on the ball causing it to twist and roll in a certain direction when it comes back down on the field. It drives defenders crazy when it bounces in front of them, then cuts around them and into the goal. So good.

Had an amazing moment playing with my friend online where I drove up the wall to hit the ball that was bouncing up there, any other time playing online I'd just hit it and hope for the best (or even just wait for it to come down and hope for the best) but being able to say "GET IN FRONT OF THE NET!" and they did allowed me to do an aerial pass and they got a one-timer goal.

I've played games where I've yelled out in frustration before, but this may be the first game I've actually stood up to celebrate doing something right.

>enemy players all scatter as well, nobody is even going after the fucking ball
>boot it right into their goal while you consider rage-quitting anyway

1) At the start, the guy on my team to my right doesn't even move or do anything
2) The teammate on my left fires himself at the ball and misses completely
3) The opposing player to my right also fires himself at the ball and misses completely, rocketing gracefully over my head
4) As I strike the ball, another lazy bastard on the opposing team remembers he's playing Rocket League and decides to move up a little, but otherwise doesn't react to me driving the ball up field
5) Note this entire time I haven't steered left or right, I was able to accomplish all of this by simply going forward and backward

7) As I front-flip the ball into his goal, the goalie reacts just in time to drive under the ball, then headbutt it backwards and to his left into the pocket.
8) I was knocking on their door before the first second of the game passed, totally unopposed. This scored took a total of four seconds to accomplish.


Some people are truly fucking insane at this game already, though. It IS a sequel to another game, so it's not like it's brand new territory for everyone.

Damn, I remember playing the older one (with the really long title) and having a ton of fun with it, but don't recall it ever having a real community (maybe I just never found it, but I can't be sure). Now the sequel has such a huge community that it even found it's way to the space station 13 community. Insane.

It helps that it was made free for PS+ users on PS4 this month. A lot of people downloaded it cause a free $20 dollar game is worth the shot and then suddenly WOW IT'S SO MUCH FUN I NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS WITH PEOPLE.

Their previous title was a console exclusive and, unfortunately, looked like one of those gimmicky console digital releases that seems novel but will only ever be some weird niche game that you'll struggle to find people to play with at any given time.

Making the new game free for PS+ saved it. They took prettymuch the same game, and stabbed a giant needle full of COMMUNITY right into its heart. Because that's really what this game boils down to, just like any other e-sports title or fighting game. With a big hubbub around it and the ability to jump right into a match against a team of other human opponents it's fucking great!

If you had to play this game against bots or sit around for more than a minute waiting to get a game it would be garbage.

It reminds me so much of Strike Vector in that way. Great fucking concept. Great fucking execution. Dead on arrival because nobody is playing or talking about it. Without that e-sports type hype going for it it's nothing...because the whole game centers around competition.

Pray to your dark gods of gaming this doesn't turn out to be some flavor of the month thing. Because the instant the playercount drops on this game it'll die.

My office is setting up a 2v2 tournament. We're making a tournament ladder and bringing a PS4 in to our conference room to use on the gigantic fucking TV they have in there. Five dollar buy-in, winning team gets trophies and gets to brag to everyone else on the floor how badly they dunked everyone else.
