Dark Souls 2 wasn't a terrible game compared to all games ever, but it was a major drop in overall quality from Dark Souls.

In my opinion, saying it was "just less good" is really understating it.

Hearing that Miyazaki is at the helm again makes me a bit more interested, but I'm still really skeptical.

Ds2 had great pvp as did ds1 except for the issues with occasional ganking and the hacking during the death of mp ds1

A lot of the "cheap tactic" were simple to exploit once you fought a couple of them

I put an obscene amount of time into DS1, and got DS2 when it came out. I was really fucking underwhelmed with it but didn't look much online about it. I am not surprised that people do not like it as much. I am glad it will be going back to its DS1 roots on this one

Yeah it's a really robust combat experience when you have a gentleman's agreement not to:

Abuse cheese builds
Abuse health items
Over/under level
etc.

...which means it's actually shit.

My favorite pvp build was one that i called the reverse tryhard. I would wear the starting knight gear, that godawful crest shield and a broadsword. I would then walk around low level areas in human form and try to get invaded. If the invader seemed new or was using a not asshole build i would just kinda fight them normally. If they were a flipping havelmom or other such low level dickwraith i would act incredibly incompetant to lure them in, and then switch to the maxed lightning nodachi i had in my off hand and just fucking unleash the pain. Still got killed a few times that way, but god damn was it ever satisfying to annihilate tryhard low level hunter douchebags

DS1 pvp was best random invasions from the guys who SL1 the game just to grief people with pimped swords at first was suspenseful and hilarious. Even if it was cheesy and backstab heavy until the hackers came you could at least maybe stand a chance.

DS2 PVP on top of being having periods of insane imbalance with the mundane weapon concept and other shit barely fucking happened outside of bellbros and ratbros. Soul memory was a shit concept where hackers would break through it anyway then jump off a fucking cliff on purpose to shove you into the havel mom league forever with their metric shitload of souls. They literally needed to add a ring to counter this I mean shit.

Bloodborne basically is more obtuse with any matchmaking even finding co op is a pain. Basically there is some fight club or something in an arena in one of the chalice dungeons and that is about it other than vileblood/executioner nonsense.

I don't have demon souls but MP seems like a downward slide.

It's okay to enjoy the PvP in these games.

But don't mistake your enjoyment of a thing for a sign of quality. It can still be fucking awful, which this certainly is, and still entertain.

Dark Souls has always been way overrated to me because the combat is really, really hokey. Like, mediocre PS2 game hokey. Beautiful character and creature design, but none of the Souls series really look like they deserve over a 7/10.
