Bottom post of the previous page:

I know a 480/1060 is the "recommended" GPU for a modern VR setup, but is that "runs games with decent settings/some supersampling" or "bare minimum 90fps on lowest settings"?

I've gotta start saving up and wanted to know the price range I should be looking at because the Canadian dollar is literally 1:1 with monopoly money in value

I wouldn't count on any supersampling for the majority of games if you're going to use a 480.

Shaps uses a 480 for VR and I don't think he can manage it in most things. I have a 1070 and can run it at 1.3 in most games.

Supersampling is absolutely worth it if you can afford the better card, it makes a huge difference in quality.

yeah, I'm aware of some of the intricacies of VR because I fell for the meme early and got a DK2, I just don't have motion controls/etc.

Been following VR since the OG kickstarter for oculus

RX480 was enough to run games at good framerates when I first got the headset, but with Vega on the horizon (supposedly), it can't hurt to wait a bit longer

What kind of market share does VR actually have? It looks cool but I can't see it moving beyond a niche market. The whole thing has a very 3D-TV vibe to it.

PSVR is the big player right now, iirc it has more units moved atm than rifts/vives combined

it's not 3DTV levels of niche because people are actually buying the headsets thank god

personally I think it's in the eraly adopter stage, but once we see cheaper headsets/2nd revisions (a vive is fucking $1100 CAD  ) plus stuff like fallout 4 VR (which is being shown at E3 I believe) it'll start to get even bigger

even if VR doesn't catch on for a while I don't see it dying ala 3DTV because people are activaely feeding money into it to create content, and unlike 3DTV there's stuff that can actually only be done with VR - also you have to film for 3D, VR games are just made as is, no extra costs required

so I used this to get motion controllers with my DK2

the FOV sucks massive dick and the tracking is really bad because I didn't do much configuring so my hands are shakier than michael j fox's but holy shit rec room is really cool

I went on and after one accidental run where my mic was the ps eye's (and I was molested by a mute man) I had everything working

I went into a game and met two guys who were also new, and we figured out how to play this shooting game where you took one shot and had to be revived via highfive, and it was awesome, even though I could barely reload my gun since my left hand specifically has REALLY shaky tracking

also it's nearly impossible for me to throw shit

it's still super fun

sorry for quadpost but

oculus has a 6 week long sale where the headset + controllers are $400 USD which is absolutely insane

for comparison, the vive is at $800 still

they also JUST announced that after the sale the bundle is being cut down to $500 permanently

this is a big fucking deal, devs are reporting massive spikes in sales of their games, oculus sold units way way faster than they thought they would have, etc.

also related, apparently the bare minimum GPU for a rift is a 1050ti? who the fuck knew, asynchronous warp must be a helluva drug

yes

if anything the vive can't play every rift game without using revive, the rift is the one with the exclusives (but they don't end up mattering because revive just lets you play the games anyways)

I would be fucking FLABBERGASTED if the 2nd gen of hmds came out in 2018 and I guarantee you they won't come out in 2017, i'd put money on that

after a payment error on oculus' site, cancelling that order and grabbing (the last!) rift from best buy, ANOTHER payment error, and a late shipment, it finally came in

I set up the sensors (without extension cables, which sucked) and jumped in and after the oculus shit ended I fired up onward

Not 60 seconds after I did the tutorial and went to the firing range I threw a grenade and fucked up my hand on a low hanging vent in my basement

I'm going to be moving to where the ceiling is higher

It's fucking great and works flawlessy with steam games though holy fuck, I'm really excited to play onward and shit (but none of my friends have vr other than shaos and he says he can't use his vive right now)

Onward was really fun when it came out but the skill ceiling is really high and it has no rankings of any sort so last I played it was mostly just one person on either team that played 40 hours a week and had a 3d printed gun stock killing everyone else in the game

I played pve this morning and it was a ton of fun, and once you turned the difficulty past ez there was some challenge involved so you might like that

only one map with night or day, unfortunately, but you can tweak enemy numbers + it has dynamic weather

pro tip: don't play on the night map and forget to bring nv/a flashlight when a sandstorm rolls in

it's a USB 3.0 card if that's what you mean, afraid I don't know too much with regard to the spec otherwise

the mobo does not have extra headers

it's not an issue because USB 2.0 works fine with the rift now and I have the bandwidth to support two sensors, but I'm a little peeved about it anyways

VR is still such a niche that it was rough hearing about it constantly from CCP while seeing it gated away behind niche hardware. I felt the same way about DUST being console only. (though that didn't stop me from hooking up a mouse and keyboard to my PS3 to farm console scrubs.

logical increments is my go to, and if you use pcpartpicker it will warn you if parts are incompatible (eg. wrong cpu for your mobo's socket, case dimensions)

you won't need a hyperfast cpu, VR is heavily GPU dependent, but pretty much any i5/i7 that's at or above 3.5ghz should do you just fine (mine is a slightly older i7 at 3.4ghz)

apparently i3s are getting better but I never paid much attention to CPUs so if anyone else knows more/if I'm wrong please chime in

i don't know when you're planning on getting a headset but here's some other shit:

- if you're looking to buy a rift be sure you have the USB ports for it, and be sure that you don't overload the hubs. I have two sensors and the Rift, and one sensor has to be plugged into one usb hub controller. the layman's method is to look at the ports on the mobo and see where the ports are - if there's a clump of ports that are further away from the others, it's probably a new hub. if this shit didn't make any sense tell me so i can take pictures
- if you're looking for a vive, the default headstrap is actual fucking horseshit and you should really really buy the deluxe strap that comes with the built in headphones, but that's like another $100 because HTC is fucked. if anyone tells you you don't need it, no, you don't, but i found that the vive started to hurt my head after an hour or so because of the headset and the weight is distributed really poorly with the default strap, and this is not an uncommon opinion. also the headphones being built in is unbelievably useful
- if you don't know which one you'd prefer, i'd recommend the rift, because it's £600 for a vive (not including the almost necessary strap which is like another 100 ontop of that) and £400 for a rift (and yes, it includes the motion controllers + 2 sensors, they're not really selling the headset alone anymore from what i understand). the two headsets are close enough that it doesn't matter what you pick, but the price difference is just way too big for not enough benefit for me to recommend a vive
- rift pros: 10000x better controllers (they have joysticks, much better buttons, and the buttons are touch sensitive so they know what you're holding, so oculus games have what they call "hand presence" where the virtual fingers sorta copy your real hands), you can play oculus games without a hack, significantly cheaper
- rift cons: 3 USB cables, 4 if you buy an extra sensor, 2 sensor setup is fairly small unless you purchase a USB extension cable, USB cable specs are often not followed well by manufacturers so you'll need to look at lists like this to figure out what will work
- vive pros: lighthouse makes it easier to set up tracking for large spaces, uses one USB port (but I think it uses like 2 or 3 power outlets), knuckles controllers on the way will have full finger tracking and look really cool
- vive cons: default headstrap is embarrassingly bad, $200 more, controllers are pretty lame, a lot of people report issues with the trackpads from what I hear (something about a piece of plastic coming loose inside? it can be fixed easily though), knuckles controllers are going to be another purchase
- if you're waiting for a "second gen" headset, you're going to be waiting a while - there's the LG headset and the Pimax ones on the way but those are more incremental and we don't know if they're any good yet
- if you tend to keep your browser open when doing other stuff you'll likely want to spring a little bit more for 16gb of RAM

anyways i mean if you don't like facebook that's cool but you don't need a facebook account to use the software (despite them trying to trick you into linking them) and i honestly don't give enough of a shit so argue with someone who isn't me

I've got the GTX 1070 in mind, anyone got any good knowledge of what CPU's and Mobo's are good these days but not the HOLY FUCK I HAVE SO MUCH MONEY TO BURN kinda budget.
logical increments is my go to, and if you use pcpartpicker it will warn you if parts are incompatible (eg. wrong cpu for your mobo's socket, case dimensions)

you won't need a hyperfast cpu, VR is heavily GPU dependent, but pretty much any i5/i7 that's at or above 3.5ghz should do you just fine (mine is a slightly older i7 at 3.4ghz)

apparently i3s are getting better but I never paid much attention to CPUs so if anyone else knows more/if I'm wrong please chime in

i don't know when you're planning on getting a headset but here's some other shit:

Thanks for the tips! I think i'm a way off actually getting my headset looking at prices of a complete rig overhaul X3
However the rift at that price point with the newer sensors is pretty damn attractive. I was always going for the vive in the past because of the controllers and movement, but since the rift has caught up it makes me think twice.

Eitherway my "dream rig" is looking pretty close to the LogicalInc's one actually, here's what I got so far https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/m6b2hq (I have SSD/HD's already).
Whatever
