You know, now that I've thought about it a little bit... the message toward gamer culture doesn't work completely. I think it's trying to make you realize what you're doing in most games, i.e. killing stuff, is bad. Unfortunately, it's holding you and other games up to a standard that... quite literally doesn't exist. Undertale is an extreme exception where there is such an insane amount of developer foresight and is designed around being able to not murder everyone. Most other games simply do not give you a choice, it was never even considered as a possibility by the developers because that's not what their games are about.

I wonder, if you do go around killing people, are you really to blame for your actions, given that *no other game* even pretends to give you other options? There's spec ops: the line, sure. You can shoot warning shots in the air to make the crowd clear rather than shoot the crowd directly, and that's great, but it and undertale are among some of the only games out there where things like that are even possible. Should you just... turn off the game each and every time you run into this unavoidable scenario, and throw out all the experiences that could come with it, just because you're forced to kill people and bystanders that are so boring they might as well boxes that can move?

I dunno. Undertale has me thinking about lots of things, that makes it a pretty good game like that. Maybe ahead of its time, even. If there were more games where merciful options were possible, but gamers STILL almost always went for needless murder and cruelty, the message could've hit harder. Not exactly much the game can do about that though.

I get that undertale fairly explicitly shows that it's not like other games, but I think my point still stands given how it is surrounded by such an overwhelming majority of games which don't do this. Should you throw out everything you know at the sight of one exception?

I wouldn't say he's criticising other games, but more exploring an idea that hasn't really ever been explored. Spec Ops does something similar, but without the option to do otherwise the impact just isn't the same.

He said before he's more or less burned out by RPGs and wanted to do something different.

Here's an Interview with Toby Fox from a few months ago where he explains some of his motivations with Undertale.

It's not criticism on RPGs, it's a deconstruction of moral systems and of the concept of saving, savescumming and replaying (parts of) the game to see how different choices play out. All Undertale does is make the world and its characters (up to a certain level) aware of your ability to save and reset.

Yeah ++ for walking right past the bait.

Also, holy hell this game is amazing. One run finished going back for another. There's so much in this game that's just really well thought out. I think that's why its so amazing. Its coherently written and manages to have personality without being obnoxious. Which is super refreshing because I totally expected the game to be an obnoxious or super pretentious meme game.

Jesus Christ, these questions are way too verbose and horribly leading. The interviewer is desperately trying to draw interpretations out of Toby Fox, probably because they hope those interpretations match theirs and they therefore interpreted the game the "right" way.

I'm happy that Toby clearly expresses there is no right way to interpret Undertale. It would have been pretentious if he'd said "you are a horrible person if you do the genocide run", but from everything I've seen his opinion is more like "it's your own choice, but the in-game world is going to respond accordingly to it".

On one hand you can argue that doing a genocide run can be interpreted by the world, and yourself, as more of a thing to explore all possible actions you can do from a OOC video game context.

However I like the idea that its more a symptom of living in a environment, and being in a position, where you can preform any action you want and then simply undo what you did then do it all over again.

Its essentially putting someone into this strange enviroment and repeating it hundreds of time's over, eventually your going to start exploring doing certain actions that normally you would never do.

I also think that's kinda what...
