SQUAD - Better than ARMA edition

SQUAD is a semi-realism PvP game akin to Project Realism. You choose a role in a squad of soldiers and go try to take the objectives from the other team. Each side has their own weapons with strengths and weaknesses. If ARMA is too janky/overcomplicated for you then SQUAD is the game you want. It focuses more on infantry battles rather than vehicle ones, though it does have vehicles.

It also has PTSD.

From what I heard from a friend who owns it the maps are between 1-3km. Of course once they add actual assets I assume they will add much bigger maps.

You should really just play PR until squad is done unless you like playing unfinished games.

I'm biased in favor of squad because I'm a godforsaken infantry player that dislikes vehicles beyond jeeps/etc.

Is it like project reality where people won't even let you even follow them in squad if you don't have mic? I don't have mic.

I haven't played in a while but people usually like you to have a mic. I've only had a few autists that demanded exact communication.

Also rock is a chicken he won't 1v1 me.

if you go in and get pissy when people ask if you have a mic you will be shit on, but if you attempt to communicate with the squad text chat and listen to orders you'll be fine

I've been enjoying the new map that came out with v9.2
I also really like the new APC's and tanks that have been added, along with all the optimizations giving me that sweet sweet 60fps

What kinda settings/GPU do you have? I didn't get a chance to play on the weekend so I didn't see how good the performance optimization was

Currently have an i5 running at 3.4g GHz along with a MSI GTX 970 and 8gb of RAM. I keep my settings between medium and high, and can get a solid 60.

Yeah it's alive, tons of servers. Alpha 10 is coming and it will have the animation overhaul, which includes vaulting and weapon handling.

it's much much easier to get into a serious game in squad than it is arma but it's not quite as reelistik if you really need to sperg out over that

it's a nice middle ground between casual shooters and arma

- it's not on the bf2 engine
- it's going to be a lot easier to add new features
- it's not on the bf2 engine
- it has built in voip which is a much nicer integration than mumble (which works, but it's another moving part)
- it looks nicer
- it's not on the fucking bf2 engine

seriously I love PR as well but just because squad is early on in development and doesn't have all the features means nothing, once it reaches feature parity there's going to be very little reason to play PR anymore

I always preferred infantry gameplay anyways so squad is exactly what I want in its current state tbh

i respect another man repping squad

its much better than ARMA because unlike ARMA you can just fucking download it and play a tactical game instead of having to spend like 30 hours prior dicking around finding all the mods that you need.

I like combined arms of PR more tho but I know that they're going to add it into squad anyway so its cool.

Nothing beats one experience I had in PR of having a very, very black sounding guy going "WHY THE FUCK IS OUR CAS GIVING EACH OTHER REACHAROUNDS IN THE CORNER OF THE MAP WHILST WE'RE GETTING FUCKING DICKED BY FUCKING LOGIES GODDAYUM" in the command channel.

after my first experience in pr being "why the fuck is there no tutorial level or firing range" immediately followed by "who the fuck wrote this fucking manual" i guess i'll wait for squad to go on sale

to be entirely fair if you find a good server/group/whatever and get set up arma is fucking incredible, I have hours of stories from an old arma 2 pub server where you just needed a content mod + ace + acre - I was reluctant to install everything at first, but it was so worth it in the long run

it also plays very differently to squad, squad/pr are a middle ground between "casual" shooters like r6/whatever and shit like arma

but yeah the pick up and play aspect is only another positive of the game
DemonFiren wrote:after my first experience in pr being "why the fuck is there no tutorial level or firing range"
because it's a bf2 mod

squad has a firing range though
DemonFiren wrote:immediately followed by "who the fuck wrote this fucking manual" i guess i'll wait for squad to go on sale
they play nearly the same, dude

tl;dr on how to play squad/pr:

- follow your fucking squad leader (this is the bare minimum requirement)
- don't shit up comms, use local chat for whatever and squad chat for important things (local chat is proximity based for any teammates near you, squad chat is traditional voip like other games but only heard by your squad)
- do what your squad leader tells you
- avoid shooting at things unless you're being shot at by the thing or have permission*
- play rifleman at first to learn basic concepts

* this is because there are a few scenarios that can happen

- you're shooting at a friendly like a dumbass because you didn't ID your target (and since you have a magic meme map that shows all of your teammate's locations there's no excuse for doing that)
- you're not in a good position to start a firefight and when you lose the element of surprise you're going to get shot because you're in an awful spot
- you're too far away to have good shots on the enemy and you've just told them where you are
- your squad is trying to get to a location and you're alerting the enemy like a piece of shit

for the love of god if you see movement just tell the SL, don't unload in the general direction of anything moving immediately

other shit:

- SLs (and now riflemen) can place down buildings (riflemen only have one sandbag wall) that can be "dug up" by anyone with an entrenching tool (shovel), they're marked by little green posts in the ground. if you SL puts one of these down and asks you to dig it up, hold LMB on it (it can be hard to find the sweetspot) until it doesn't do the digging animation anymore
- there's bullet penetration now, you can shot/be shot through shit - material and caliber matters, though
- you can't take a vehicle unless your SL fulfills a request, they do this so shit for brains assholes don't snatch the jeeps and drive off alone like in battlefield (you can be a passenger if someone is driving though)
- if you get shot, you can bandage yourself with a field dressing to stop the bleeding - you'll need a medic to properly heal you, though
- if you get shot to death you can be down or "dead dead" - medics can give you a magic meme to revive you but you'll be bleeding and near death, so let them fucking heal you if you get revived. if you want to respawn you can open the menu and press give up. voip still works when you're downed
- medics are important in that they should avoid dying - if you want to get your feet wet after learning the basics, play medic, but make sure to stay back and not be the pointman - you have awful optics and if you die everyone else is fucked

the manual is fuckhuge but that's the braindead idiot's guide to playing squad - the tl;dr is "listen to the fucking squad leader", because 9/10 people would rather an attentive noob who knows nothing than some shithead who wants to topfrag running off on his own

Just gameplay wise I prefer Arma
