tie the caterpillar to a vine or whatever you were gonna use to lash the metal to the rod to make the spear
then slowly lower it down into the grate to perform a reconnaissance operation

alternatively hold your lamp up to the crate
you decide it would be easiest to hold your lamp up to the grate
you peer down into the grate
you see a regular looking key
out the corner of your eye you see the caterpillar wiggle
speaking of the caterpillar
Spoiler:
you put him back on his perch
he wiggles as if content

If the key has a loop try to hook around the rake handle
Otherwise attatch gum to rake to stick to key

GarlicBread wrote:If the key has a loop try to hook around the rake handle

you try to poke the end of the rake into the key's loop, but there's nothing to catch onto it with
you stick the ABC gum to the end and try to pick up the key, but the gum can't hold the weight of the key and falls off the rake and into the grate
shit

Try to re- skewer the gum and key with the tine of the rake, or pick it up claw game style

bandit wrote:Try to re- skewer the gum and key with the tine of the rake, or pick it up claw game style
the head of the rake won't fit through the gaps in the grate
you'd need to hook something inside the key loop, or something along those lines

is the ice pick head thingo hook like, and can it fit through the grille? Actually could you just better describe the item in detail?

it's just a shard of metal that is in the rough shape of an ice pick's head
if you went at a slight angle it would fit through, but your arm can't reach the bottom
factoryman942 wrote:use the caterpillar as your lockpick

you screw off the rake head
you take some of the smaller ivy vines off the wall and attempt to fasten it to the rake
it manages to stay on - it won't be sturdy enough for any kind of swinging, but you're confident it'll hold if you stick it down the grate
you do that
it takes some work, because it's dark and you're using a ghetto grabby thingy, but you manage to carefully hook the key ring onto the metal shard and pull it up
inventory:
-1/4th full oil flask (not ye flask)
-not tea
-a rake stick with a metal shard tied to the end
-a rake head
-ABC gum (now covered in dirt and shit)
-a lit oil lamp, full
-a key

it's doing fine for oil, though, you shouldn't have to worry about it running out
ShadowDimentio wrote:Go down the stairs to the next room and search the area for a house for caterpillar friend
you go into the room at the bottom of the stairs
an elegant rug covers a hardwood floor, and the room is lined with stocked bookshelves
you pull a book out, but it's written in an undecipherable language
in the middle of the room is a comfortable looking chair with a small stand next to it
an extinguished lamp sits on the table
an unlit fireplace is directly across from the stairway

Find a blank page at the back of some book
Roll it up and light it from the lamp we have
Use the flame to light the other lamp and fire. If the fireplace doesn't want to take, tear pages out of a book and use it as kindling for the fire.
Admire all the fires we've just started.

sorry i should have clarified - the fireplace is empty, as in there's no wood to burn in it right now
Grazyn wrote:>sit on chair
you take a nice break and sit on the chair

bandit wrote:Move the rug
you try to pull the rug, but the table and chair sitting on top of it limits your ability to do so
you lift it up as best you can to peek underneath but you don't see any signs of a secret door or anything of note beyond some dust
why would someone put a trapdoor to a secret study and then have another trapdoor to another secret study anyways
you feel like this course of action was not well thought out
GarlicBread wrote:Appraise the value of this rug
it's a pretty nice rug but you have no time to determine the monetary value of objects because 1. the DM hasn't thought that far ahead amd 2. you only care about obtaining ye flask
you appraise the rug to be worth approximately 20 pieces of etherite, making up a form of currency on the spot and giving it a rough value
you get sidetracked as you being imagining a whole imaginary universe and where said currency came from
it's a shame you have no one to share this imaginary universe with, you could make some kind of roleplaying game about it
maybe have the players roll dice in order to perform actions
