The Kingmakers - Tabletoppan

Post by Maccus » #122974

Sup everybody, it's me, Maccus. You might know me from such works as "Being A Horrible, Spiteful Turd on the Forums," "Guy Who Ran D&D for a Bit," and "Maccus' Ban Appeal." I'm here to invite you to another game I'm trying to run, but a little different than my D&D idea. Here's the setup. I'm looking to run a tense, story-driven game in a fantasy setting, but on a pretty big scale. I'm thinking of doing it in arcs/seasons, mini-campaigns that are part of a huge story but each arc follows a different perspective, party-wise. Basically, we'd be doing the test run, the first season/arc, pretty much the prologue, and if it works and we like it, we'll continue, and we might even revisit the characters we'd use for this arc. The setting would be pretty low-fantasy, think Mount&Blade Warband, and I'm thinking of modifying the 40k RPGs to use for it (though we won't be using the same setting obvs), but I'm open to suggestions about the system. I don't wanna say too much on what the plot would be right now, but I will say this: I'll need at least four people, and if you're interested all you have to do at this point is say "dibs," we'll get to the setting in stuff when I know we can get this thing off the ground.

dibs. Also check out the warhammer fantasy RPG, it uses pretty much the identical system to the 40k RPGS but in a more fantasy way

It MIGHT be better to use DH compared to WHFRP because, though it's definitely not low-fantasy, it's still being updated regularly and has loads of stuff to use.

Your call. I ran wfrp and it was really fun, but really the most fun part was the randomized character creation which does not really apply to this game anyway

Right. We need a few more players so sigh up ye dogs.

I have created Cromwell Marston, gunslinger, bounty hunter, overall handsome sharpshooter and wastrel. Grew up on the mean streets of wretchport and now kills and captures people for cash. He has some morals, but they are quite easily bought.

Sebastian Roux lived almost all his life on the high seas. Only time he got off the boat was to do jobs to support his family. Nowadays however, he's on his own looking for a man.

I've made Cinders Quenik, a sixty-something-year-old retired trader, sailor, cook, and one time surgeon. His days of adventure were supposed to be over a while ago, but after ten years of retirement and family he's realized he's running out of stories, and is desperate to recapture his days of adventure. Though his body has aged, his wit hasn't.

I chose the priest career path because it seemed like it'd best represent an old dude whose picked up lots of little skills over his days, but I've never actually played DH, and I've only really skimmed the PDFs so I'm not sure if priest is as... well, bardish as I think it is.

In this first arc we are supposed to be skilled mercenaries, but almost all the classes have decent combat prowess. The idea of the campaign is that we play various parties in a persistent world that changes based on what we do

I'll be as murderhobo-y as I need to be. I find that turning people to your side is much better than just outright killing them.(Unless you're paid by someone muuuuuch more powerful, then you do kill them. Hell you might kill them even if your employer isn't more powerful. I mean reputation is a thing right? Assassination ethics!)

ill make jonathan talist, a cleric born in feral world dusk. he saw terrible things growing up, as expected of his birthplace, but managed to stow away on a straggling trader ship towards the inner colonies. One way or another he eventually found himself in Richten, where he worked as a wandering healer, curing illnesses large or small in exchange for a good meal or a warm bed . despite his horrific childhood, he doesn't let much bother him; he's polite and quiet, but not in a withdrawn way so much as simply only speaking when spoken to. he met his current group when they happened across him and simply asked if he'd like to join, which he agreed to. he doesn't really approve of murder, but isn't a paragon about it and will do what needs to be done to help his new family.

so that's that. thinking i'd like to fill a healing role if we need one/this is possible, if not i could try being long range/sniper. again, first time, so let me know what needs fixing.

It is important to keep in mind that the system we are using is based on 40k, so clerics do not actually cast divine magic like DnD and are more like orators and battlefeild preachers. In fact they do not even get the Medicae skill is part of their career skills. Not sure if divine magic even exists in this setting. If you wanted to be a healing holy man i am sure that Maccus would let you switch around your skill advancement tree a bit though.

As for party roles, all i really know is that Cromwell is ranged focused, fighting with a brace of pistols, a musket and his rapier wit. Dunno about anyone else

Also Wiznard Maccus told me over skype that it is cool if you join, he was on his phone so he couldnt reply himself.

I'm planning on going with a feral world-dusk /guardsmen / mercenary , named Tripes. ((OC Doughnut Steel))
Spoiler:
Adopted by a Village Chief. Father trains him in fighting with swords. Father takes Tripes on raids of other villages. Father leaves to go on some battle with other Village men. One day village is visited by some horrible spirit/thing. Spirit/thing sees something in Tripes and spares him. Forced to watch the spirit/thing slaughter everyone in front of him. Father and co. return from battle and believe that Tripes is the reason the village is destroyed and everyone is slaughtered. Tripes manages to escape death by his father and co. by escaping into the marsh but, he got a cut across the bridge of his nose from his father's weapon. While in the marsh Tripes manages to escape his pursuers but stumbles into a den of marshdogs. He manages to defeat them but gains massive body scars everywhere but on his head. suddenly noticed a group that was heading his way. They turned out to be a band of mercenaries who are in need of another soldier in their ranks. Tripes decides to join up with them. Fast forward a month or so; Group is heading to a short skirmish in a marsh village. Turns out to be a trap and much of the group is slaughtered. One of the group manages to get a shot off and kills a man about to kill Tripes. Tripes turns in reguard and mows down the man who was about to cut up the dude. Both of them make a run for it and high tail it out of there. They catch their breath before looking at each other all cut up and bloodied before laughing hard for a few moments. The guy introduces himself as Cromwell Marston, and Tripes responds with "I'm just called Tripes."
I intend to be melee heavy and not really rely on ranged weapons.

As acquainted as you all want to be, there could be a new guy to the group that's still learning the quirks of the rest of the band. You definitely at least know each others' names and such.

We have a cleric already (TableTurning) if that helps your decision at all (I personally don't mind, play what you want to play!). As for the theology question, I tried to leave enough vague about the cultures and stuff so that you guys can wing it and throw in some lore of your own if you want. A thing I like to do in my games is let my players worldbuild if they want, since this is their game just as much as it is mine.

Wyzack wrote:Hey Maccus whereabouts are we going to be starting this campaign? The big capital in the center of the star?
Yup yup (I really should work on making an actual map at some point), though your characters can be from anywhere you want. I know at least one player's character is a complete foreigner.

And, just to clarify, you'll have the basic starting 400 exp and 50 thrones to spend, along with whatever you get from your career choices. Wyzack pointed out things like horses aren't in the Rulebook, so I'm gonna say a regular old draft horse is about 20 thrones, and a war horse is the full 50. On top of that, Wyzack also pointed out muskets are hella underpowered, so bump that 1d10+2 damage up to 1d10+4. I want muskets to hurt in this game.

EDIT: If you have any further questions, PM me for my Steam or my Skype. They're more accessible than the forums for me a lot of the time so I'm sure to reply quicker.

DOUBLE EDIT: I'm liking what I'm seeing from everyone so far, if I didn't mention that already.

Alright then, it seems we are going to be meeting in Adamonte, biggest city in the realm and seat of the High King. Cromwell traveled here after receiving word of a particularly lucrative job opportunity, either traveling with you guys or calling for you via courier or whatever. We should probably hash out now if we have been working together for some time, right now the only character i have a backstory with is that Cromwell and Tripes are acquainted as warrior buddies. If you want to be the new guy then we can also say that i just hired you on here in Adamonte.

Anyways Cromwell has been staying in a shitty tavern in the seedier part of town called the Slug and Lettuce, and is waiting on the crew to gather after meeting with the guy who gave him the job. ( i think anyways, i just made most of this up)

Well I feel like it was done and I already sent Mucus a character sheet in beautiful notepad format, but I feel like expanding on my backstory.

Like my character is a sort of outsider, he's with a group of people that basically live on the sea via a fleet of large ships away from control of any of the kingdoms. Of course the question 'how do they eat?' and similar stuff pops up and I say that these guys trade 'services' (assassinations and less than legal stuff, ok maybe sex too hah!) with the land lovers for food and supplies.

Course that leads to 'okay Galvo the Great why is this guy joining up with a merc group if these guys seem to have it good?' Well my thinking is that these Shipmen all treat each other like a great big family. It's kinda like crew on a submarine are super tight with each other. (I mean if your stuck in a small space with other guys forever you gotta get friendly with them right?) Which leads to my character's only real moral 'Never turn weapons on family'. Well the guy my character is chasing did that in a big way and got a lot of people killed.

So now he has to travel the mainland finding this guy, of course this isn't going to be an easy feat and is going to take a lot of resources to pull off this hunt so he's hooking up with this local merc group.(Which I assume is called The Kingmakers because that makes sense right, why title the thread that it if you aren't going to use it in your game right?)

Thirty-four years have passed since High King Armetz I took the throne, leading the Five Points against an invasion from the Empire of the Brass Dragon from the East. Many still remember the days of the war, the frightening uncertainty of whether or not Sechringia would fall to a foreign power, yet despite this, times are cheerful. Children play their games of pretend in the streets, men play their games of chance in the taverns, and nobody in all of Adamonte pays any time to the thought that the capitol of the Kingdoms of the Star could be in danger... At least from outside sources. In the seedier parts of town, known to you as the Hovels, however, the idea of danger is something you have to get used to. You were told by your acquaintance Cromwell that a rather lucrative contract has shown itself to him, and he has been contacted to meet with an agent of his employer in a dive called "The Slug and Lettuce." Walking through the Hovels, you take a moment to take in the sights. Three burly, mustachioed men stand near an alleyway, their arms crossed as they speak with an old beggar. A toothless child chases a rather large rat through a path of dirty cobblestones. A man far too well-dressed to be in this part of town stands at a street corner, yelling news about the goings-on of the Kingdoms at any who will listen. You spy the Slug and Lettuce's tavern sign just down the street, a raggedy chunk of wood painted with a crude depiction of what looks like the worst salad ever, and take a moment to collect yourselves before going in.

((I like to start off any campaign I run with everyone introducing their characters, describing them, what mannerisms other player characters might have learned about them in their time together, stuff like that. Of course, you only have to describe your character as much as you want to!))

Suddenly the area in front of the door goes dark as the figure of a towering man lumbers into the tavern. Once inside he stops for a moment and scans the room with his murky black eyes. His face is clean shaven and looks practically unscathed, except for a deep scar across the bridge of his nose. Spiky jet black hair atop his head wobbles slightly through the breeze in the room; a tattered cloak sways gently behind him. Beneath it appears to be a metal cuirass and a bracer on each arm. Looking past him you notice there is a small rucksack thrown over his shoulder. On his back you notice his weapon; a strange black sword. It appears to be almost as tall as the man himself, on the other end is a large wooden grip covered in bandages. He spots a man in the room and walks over to greet him.

"Hey Cromwell!" the man reaches out and pats Cromwell on the shoulder "It's been quite a while since we last saw each other hasn't it? Time just seems to fly by..." He chuckles "How have things been on your end? I got your message to meet up here, seems like you have a job you needed to call in your old pal Tripes for, eh?" Tripes grins widely before taking a seat.

Warning, wall of text character description ahead
Spoiler:
Cromwell stands at about 6'1", and has short black hair and a wiry build. All things considered he is a pretty handsome guy, in spite of a thick scar on one side if his face from a close call with a bullet. He tends to be gruff and mostly quiet unless he is running a con or trying to convince someone, in which case he lays the charm on thick with his trademark dashing smile. He wears a thick quilted armor vest pretty much all the time, usually with a dark green long sleeved shirt underneath. When working a job he wears thick leather armor over his limbs instead. He carries a brace of 3 pistols slung in a bandoleer across his chest, and when working a job he also carries a musket across his back. Although Cromwell will do the right or moral thing when he can, for him gold runs thicker than blood and he does what he can to make money.

All that he willingly shares about his past is that he is from the eastern city of wretchport and that he was a bounty hunter for many years before going straight up mercenary. He fritters away much of his gold on booze, whores and gambling when he has any to spare.
Cromwell, sitting on a barstool by the bar proper, looks up from his mug of ale and grins.
"Tripes you old swamptrudging bastard, how have ya been? Still waiting on a few of the others, should probably find a more private place to talk. This is gonna be one helluva job though, i can tell ya that much."
Arthur Thomson says, "Since there are no admins I would loging with another account and kill you"
Caleb Robinson laughs.

Cecil "Cinders" Quenik, some geezer with an affinity for telling long winded stories, only half of which sound true. He used to be some kind of teacher or librarian or something back in Anthia (Though he also claims to have been a sailor back in his heyday). When questioned about the circumstances of his departure, he gets all cryptic and says some elderly bullshit about "Needing to start his stories anew", though some of his words have suggested that he ran into trouble...

He likes being a coy mysterious old guy, and plays those little mind games where instead of telling you what you need, he'll help you come to the correct conclusion. He carries a couple of thick leatherbound journals in his bag, along with ink and a number of writing tools. He also has money, and lots of it, keeping a little more than a hundred thrones in his coin pouch.

He's scrawny and gaunt, with the hunched back of a man who has spent a lot of his life writing, yet his leathery skin suggests someone who had spent his youth out at sea. He wears a crooked, knowing little grin framed with wispy grey facial hair, and his head is covered with a cowl. He is wrapped up in a cloak that smells like sea salt and is stained with ink. He walks with the help of a staff.

He sits without presence, almost hidden, scribbling in a journal. He had sat down earlier, and made a bit of small talk with Cromwell. Cecil had told him about the time he accidentally started a grease fire on a naval ship, was held at gunpoint, and convinced the crew that it was the cats fault. He looks up at the new comer. He looks up at the newcomer, and gives him a smile and a nod.

A spindly young man with ginger hair, Sebastien Roux ((I swear I feel like I spelled this name three different times now.)) walks through the door twirling a knife in elegant long fingers and humming a tune. Although generally helpful and always replies with a genuine friendly smile, he tends to deflect questions pertaining to his background, usually by shifting the conversation to a more pleasant subject. Though a quick look at him one can obviously see he's not from this land and the lack of any major scars would lead one to wonder if he's actually done this type of work before.

He slips his knife back into his shirt and gives a friendly wave. "Hello Mr. Cromwell! I hope I'm not too late, I got sidetrack trying to help a kid catch a rat!"

((Table will be posting soonish, he had to run real quick, and I'm helping Deitus out right now.))

The bar seems mostly empty, save for one weary, toothless old man at the counter half-polishing a glass, and another passed out in the back, using a booth as a bed, surrounded by tiny little discarded glasses. The air stinks heavily of rotten food, with the faintest hint of some dead animal hidden under the floorboards. Nobody comes in or out of the tavern right now. It would seem your contact seeks to keep you waiting, if only for a moment.

just as the group prepares to move, an unassuming man walks in quietly, wearing little more than tattered, grimy clothing that barely holds up the hood covering his head. he makes his way over to the group as they begin gathering their things and sits without a word, drawing wary looks from his new peers. Realizing this, he reaches into a filthy pocket and withdraws a piece of paper, unfolding it and sliding it forward across the table before silently folding his hands, waiting. Glancing down, one can see a hastily written flyer with scraggly, bold handwriting that declares, "Mercenary group in need of new hands for well-paying job, some experience needed" before listing the tavern as a location followed by a date and time. "Jonathan Talist," the man says with a small, almost sheepish smile. "Guardsman. I hope I may be of service."

Cecil leans across his compatriots to extend a hand to the Mr Talist and Mr. Roux. "Cinders, Oldman Cinders if you want to be formal!" he says, his voice a pleasant gravely base. He writes down their names in the old journal he was scribbling in, biting the nib for a moment. "This place smells like a Mago freighter I worked on once, it carried raw materials for perfumes... Let me tell you, they don't smell nearly as pretty before their put together... I think I'll need a little bit to drink, something to burn the smell from my nostrils...". Cecil orders a shot of "Something strong" from the barman, after he's done talking to Cromwell.

Tripes flips a throne out of his sack and slides it onto the counter near the other throne and says

"It's not a good meeting unless we're all drinking! I'll take whatever cromwell is having, bartender."

While waiting for his drink Tripes turns to Cecil and quietly asks "So old timer, got any good stories about the supernatural? I'm always in the mood for a tale 'em"
