Seasonal Event Admin Conduct

Post by RaveRadbury » #607382

NEW OP HERE

When and where this incident occurred: Event Hall US, 2021-06-27
Byond account: RaveRadbury
ROUND ID HERE IF APPLICABLE: 164919
Detailed summary:

Seasonal events are a tremendous effort and it seems like every time we have one admins who are not members of the event staff take liberties with their tools in ways that can derail or shorten the event.
This complaint has been made in an attempt to address the most recent instances so that we may see fewer of them in the future.

During our recent seasonal event multiple admins used admin tools to try and sway the outcome of the event. This is against admin conduct.

Event and Badminning Guidelines wrote:Do not interfere or try to add your own spice to events run by other admins.

The following logs start during the 10th round, the botany round. At this time MortoSasye was the lone announcer running the event while CitrusGender was streaming it. During the outcome of the round there was controversy over who won. While this is okay, admins made use of admin tools to express their disagreement with how things were going and attempted to make a change to the outcome of the event.

But anyway- the puzzle is up to decide so we don't have to butt heads with the other admins constantly." (Thunderdome Arena (111,132,2))
Parsed logs here.
Raw logs here.

It appears that the methods used were:
  • OOC while it was disabled for players
  • Custom Vote
  • Admin Announcement
  • Command Reports
  • Global Narrate
  • Spawning a megaphone for use in IC chat
This is not good conduct, particularly the command reports seeing as Morto was using Command Reports as official communication.

I am not seeking any punitive outcomes for the admins involved in this complaint, rather I would like to see it upheld by the team as an example of admin event conduct breach.
Seasonal events are moving from a new thing to a regular thing and as it changes hands from the originator to the next group we need to take a moment to draw attention to these boundaries and reinforce them.[/s]

Can you please include a list of names of the specific admins you are lodging this complaint again? From the parsed logs, I can see:

naloac
fikou
That Engineer
Twaticus
dustyexaliber
NamelessFairy
Pepsiman0
JusticeGoat

Am I correct in assuming you wish for this complaint to be leveled at each and every one of these admins, or is it just some of them?

JusticeGoat and That Engineer did tips of the round that were ultimately on the sidelines of the disagreement.

The other admins involved in those logs all made at least one admin-restricted action towards the disruption of the event against the event runner.

I will update the complaint accordingly.

I'd also like to reiterate that the issue isn't with the disagreement (admins looking at raw logs can see quite a bit of disagreement going on in asay that I'm not touching on here).
The issue is the use of admin abilities to interfere with an event that is not theirs to run, which is something that has caused problems with multiple events in the past.

Both me and NamelessFairy were event staff.

I have handled the first with Morto after the event. The second one is the poll for the winner being created in the middle of me giving a medal to the winner of the tournament (the medal giving was agreed upon with the events staff right before iirc), it's obviously frustrating.

I'd like to add that there were several event staff and myself invited by Citrus to "add spice" during the event including Fikou and NamelessFairy from the list posted here. While that does not make their behavior regarding the disagreement about the outcome of the competitions overflowing into public channels any less uncool it should be considered when it comes to other possible cases of interference that were in-fact sanctioned and encouraged.

We were coordinating in a now deleted voice channel (id: 858741992029028372) Morto created for us to use during the event. Needed because past events channels with less strict permission saw day of admins flood in causing issues.

Personally I was very happy to see such a large turnout from the admin team. Adminwho verb filled the entire length of my chat and then some! I hope that future events can see them stay in their lane a bit more, helping close silly tickets is always appreciated, and showing some restraint when it comes to spawning or pressing any buttons which may have any impact on the grand scheme of what we worked so hard to prepare for everyone to enjoy because we can't just do it over. Not with all the organizing and planning that went into it.

Per discussion with Rave, I wanted to say that the action of Fikou and Nameless were in the realms of the powers invested to them during the event from me as the event's host. Morto is invited to discuss whether or not there was anything wrong with their conduct here but I am curious about their insight. As such, I'd just say we'd discussed it internally for them and just have them removed from the complaint. (Unless Morto reverses that)

This isn't my final post here, I am curious about some of the messages of the headmins and the other admins named in the complaint.

If the events team wants to lay claim on handling the conduct of their own team members within their events then that would sort out some of the grey area that exists in this complaint. It's my understanding that Nameless and Fikou both addressed their actions with Morto after the event happened, so it would seem to me then that the events team has handled their issues internally. If headmins are concordant with this notion then the complaints against Fikou and Nameless do not need to be upheld.

On the note of grey area, it might help the events team to designate one or more team members as proper judges for any future potentially contentious community competitions, rather than the responsibility falling on the one making the announcements and trying to work the event code to keep things moving. Having a clear main "runner(s)" for the event would align with our existing policy and hopefully contribute to keeping situations like this from coming up again. (Or just avoid competitions in general for inter-server events)

In discussions with members of the events team it has been demonstrated to me that issues do occur due to team member actions and are addressed internally.

As such is this case, and in respect to those who put their time and effort in as well as seasonal events themselves I will be withdrawing my complaints against event team members.

This is stupid. When the rules hamper our ability to create conversations that improve issues within the community we should consider rather or not to blindly follow that rule.

Would you prefer I move this to policy discussion or start a new thread there?

I want to break this entire thing down step by step without leaving much out, to show how this complaint doesnt really hold much water, I also wanted it directed at me since im the one who started the posting and since im a headmin its obvious others would.
follow in my lead assuming they where allowed to. If rave decides to keep this as a complaint and not a policy discussion below is my response, its quite long but I feel like it needs alot of context.

Spoiler:
to begin with I will explain the lead up. To begin with citrus says while the match is preparing that "This is the last event right here" on stream meaning everyone *including myself* thought that once this event was over that was it.
Joey as a good sport seemingly due to the fact he has alot of time on botany compared to lola asks for a blindfold.

Morto does an annoucement saying
Spoiler:
[2021-06-27 23:41:57.316] ADMIN: MortoSasye/(Judge Bella Inaba-Rouge) has created a command report: "The final round! Terry vs Manuel, Lola Volver vs Joey Petunia.
-
- Your objective is to make a plant to kill your opponent with. Hope you have green hands.
-
- Good luck.", sent from "Gameshow Birb" with the sound "default_announcement".
The event begins both lola and joey run out, Lola pushes joey and begins to hit him with an axe from the middle. this axe bit becomes important in abit. he gets away and runs back to his spawn. Morto then annouces

[2021-06-27 23:43:09.638] ADMIN: MortoSasye/(Judge Bella Inaba-Rouge) has created a command report: "Ahem. You have to use plants. Remember? ", sent from "Gameshow Angry Birb" with the sound "default_announcement".

A pretty fair ask its not made from plants or a plant. it probably shouldnt have been there in the first case but the fact that it was in the middle and not on both sides leads me to think that the mapper thought about it and added it anyway.
Domi on the stream says joey is going for a baseball bat among other things. Joey then gets ahealed for the axe meme. The map maker is also praying during this asking admins to add things to fix his oversight. He doesnt mention anything
about the axe. One of the event runners spawns this
Spoiler:
[2021-06-27 23:44:09.488] ADMIN: waylandsmithy/(Wayland Smithy) has offered control of (*no key*/(Joey's Nightmare Bear)) to ghosts.
Which does no damage but pushes joey over for abit till removed. Chat is spammed by a guy offering advice to lola one of the things he says is make a bat. Joey then gets a locker which has an axe inside of it. for awhile nothing really
happens, Citrus says again that this is the final round and this will win you the tournament. After another decent while of waiting joey finishes his towercaps and makes a buckler and shortly after a bat. shortly after lola finishes theirs and makes a bat
both of the annoucers basically happily talk about the bat. Talking about strats and how it could all go down. its announced one minute is left joey then asks for a little more time, about a minute and a half later
lola runs up to his spawn and starts trying to get in, obviously not due to spawn protection but attempts to. Its "then announced bats are boring", Not to not use them just that they are boring. Joey asks for more time and he wont use the bat.

Fikou then says this in chat
Spoiler:
ADMIN: fikou/(War Hero Stefan Harvest) has created a command report: "This show is sponsored by MODsuits, coming out in 2561! Buy your shares now!", sent from "Nakamura Engineering" with the sound "default_announcement".
About 2-3 ish minutes after the first annoucement its announced they will be getting another extra minute. someone does a minor meme with a tip, joey finishes his weapons then gets ready to come out and fight after hitting
lola with his weapon he realises, Oh I dont have gloves an reteats inside and asks the admins for some, from my knowledge there was a hydrobe in the map in the middle. After some minor slip ups and a annoucement he finishes the gloves
Spoiler:
[2021-06-27 23:56:40.908] ADMIN: fikou/(War Hero Stefan Harvest) has created a command report: "The spawn protections may or may not be removed in 45 seconds.", sent from "Central Command" with the sound "default_announcement".

[2021-06-27 23:56:49.303] ADMIN: MortoSasye/(Judge Bella Inaba-Rouge) has created a command report: "It would be a shame if.
-
- If someone removed the spawns...", sent from "Gameshow Sneaky Birb" with the sound "default_announcement".

fikou annouces that spawns may or not be removed in 45 seconds, 9 seconds after that spawns are removed forcing joey to start fighting with his now finished gear. Joey is using nova flowers and a buckler made from the wooden towercaps
Lola is just using a made from wooden towercaps bat. The fight begins with lola in the kudzu and hitting joey. Whos struggling to hit her while shes obfucsated by the vines. its then announced

I say this as a rhetorical question, The hatchet would have been not fine and probably a major oversight by the event mapper, the bats are made out of plants and both side used wood based items.

Some minor memes in asay as the fight continues.

Lola wins the fight asay continues as

when the voting talk began on both sides.

Nameless bring up the fact its a youtuber and popular admin in the vote vs a mostly unknown player. Not incredibly fair and from me asking all of the event runners this seems to be a almost entirely unexpected vote. As fikou points out
he was quite literally handing a medal to lola.

as fikou said. The host specifically saying No to the vote after its been started. At this point lola is celabrating her victory with fikou handing her the medal. while its ongoing lola is celebrating obviously notrealising what has / is about to happen

Still after the end of the event, from this message citrus assumes that its all of the event runners agreeing with this outcome. When from my knowledge of asking the event runners this
wasnt the case.

[2021-06-28 00:02:32.593] ADMIN: naloac/(revenant (785)) has created a command report: "Suck my nuts lola won", sent from "Central Command" with the sound "default_announcement".

Fikou is an event runner who didnt agree with that vote, so he makes his disagreement known. plus since hes an event runner and the event is over this cannot be called misconduct.

Citrus laughs on stream and says there abit of a disagreement among the admins, note not event runners or jury, he specifically says admins as the event is over of course people are allowed to meme about the ending.

[2021-06-28 00:03:08.543] ADMIN: dustyexaliber/(Lisette Die Heilige) has created a command report: "We agree Lola is the the winner damn it.", sent from "The Syndicate" with the sound "default_announcement".

Fikous is an event runner here so those dont count. Im also wrong in this line, Lola did not have a buckler only joey did. but my general point in ooc still stands. Citrus says I dont know on the stream about the loading on the next map
seemingly confused about this message. Citrus then again blasts out the ear drums of anyone listening as he shouts about the next round thats about to happen. At this point the event is now BACK ON.

A small message no bigger than a chat message but since its a tip its more noticeable than normal, I dont think this is majorly conduct breaking but it shouldnt have been sent.

The event continues and lola due to an oversight gets through a door she was not meant to be able to. Lola ends up getting the final key and then wins. Citrus then says out loud again that lola has won the competition.
I say in OOC LOLA WINS? then this is announced

All of these bar two are minor ooc messages I fail to see how they would really count as misconduct. If you 100% believe that all the ones you highlighted are still conduct breaking after what Ive pointed out
I think that this shoulda have been a policy discussion as everyone who posted would have believed the event was over bar the ones above Ive highlighted. Effectively when has the ended event ended?

Jimmius and I are perfectly fine with this just being a policy discussion if you want. Let us know whether you want this to be a policy discussion or complaint and we can move from there.

To clarify, I'm not sure where the idea this had to be a complaint came from. I certainly don't remember saying you had to make it one, and I can't find coco saying it just from searching the Discord.

I think this complaint was made with good intentions, and I'm really happy that it could come into existence! I really am. Though, I feel like it's a little bit confusing to me as the person who hosted the event afterward as well just since I see something I helped make thrust back into the limelight for another reliving of something that I was willing to markdown as a win!

---
Point One: Event staff decentralization

I will say it clearly and cleanly: my experience during the event was probably not hampered by any of these individuals personally other than one person who was privately talked to. There are a few things that need to be looked at here which I suppose could have become more relevant in a policy thread but come out now since nobody particularly asked my opinion before this issue was brought to light:

It confused me a little bit when you gave me some pushback when I talked to you about fikou and morto being removed from the complaint since you told me that "Morto was the runner of the event" which I feel like is... not at all what happened. Mainly, the events team was very decentralized and it is IMPOSSIBLE to determine what is going to happen and when something is going to happen. There were a million things going on to the date of the event and I missed many things on the road towards the event. I did not designate a specific person to be the end all be all of the announcers so morto filled the impromptu leader role and this effectively caused other admins to attempt to say stuff that might have seemed contradictory (See Nameless and Fikou originally being included in this complaint.) But that's okay! It was good intentions and I think that Morto and Fikou put a ton of effort into the event.

Perhaps that can change in the future? I don't really know. I care about getting shit done so these types of rules mean nothing to me. I could talk about standardization all day but what fucking gets these events done is hard work and that's why I saw the need to remove Nameless and Fikou from the complaint since their actions made the event happen, so I can mind some small stuff from them.

--------
Point Two: Non-event staff interfering with events

As for the others, Lepi put down a very long list about the minutia about events but I think that there is definitely a delicate balance that needs to be made. I value those who put in the effort and it definitely hurts to see people who did not message me the day of interfering with the event. Do I think that it would have made things clearer and more understandable if all these admins didn't interfere with the ending? Absolutely. I think that there are some examples that came up of some things which are ultimately troublesome for the event, as listed by lepi.

Still, I should highlight something as well: With all this chaos going on Lepi: it's a little bit difficult for a player to understand when exactly is the "true end" of the event. The potential for stuff as it happened is very chaotic and due to the very nature of the show: it's always going to have the chance where the ending may not be too clear. Though on the other hand, I can understand how the chaos that perpetrated through the event effectively set the scene for there to be a particular amount of outrage from the results: which honestly as an event host fills me up with warm fuzzies that people can get that into the events that I make.

As such, I think that it would have been on me as a host to outline that certain things should have been more streamlined if I was particularly too concerned with the ending winner of the event. If you've followed the event process of the gameshow: you would know that chaos was our ultimate intention and it doesn't surprise me too much that this type of stuff happened as it did. Could it have been done better? Sure, potentially. But do I ultimately blame these admins? I think taking this complaint to drag people up has been humiliating enough. There definitely were some people who particularly tried to interfere with the event and they were handled outside of this complaint. But these other people? It seems to me to be on par with your brother changing the channel because his team lost their game. Annoying and perhaps something we can work on: but something that, by itself isn't a problem

----
Point Three: Too many cooks

The meat of the issue is definitely here though, and this is perhaps where the policy thread may come by. I think the majority of this stuff was harmless by itself. Though they were not done by themselves, they were done with a massive wave of admins who stuck their hands into the pot. With all these admins that interfere with the event: it turns into a tidal wave that effectively becomes something unmanageable if we don't have rules in place. From that perspective: do I think that we have something truly worthy of a complaint? Yes, I really think so. But you really can't do a complaint against the admin team like that. The most that I can ultimately do here is ask people before the event to not particularly interfere and remind people that the event staff are the main ones running the event. Still, it only became a problem once at the end which is still pretty admirable considering the chaotic nature of the event. But ultimately, it should be removed as a group and we should use this event as a warning for when too many people interfere with an event. I cannot say that any of the previous events come to mind having this much of a backlash its chaotic nature: but I would imagine that we'd need to make it more clear for events like the toolbox tournament and the gameshow that admins should use their powers sparingly or else they end up with a mess.

Sorry if that was a bit rambly! I had to think through this one a little bit. I'm glad the thread exists and I think there's some good things to learn from it: though I ultimately think that we got a little bit lost in the sauce here, on everyone's behalf.

Both me and Coco think this would be better as a policy discussion than a complaint, and after discussing it with Rave, it turns out it was only a complaint due to a miscommunication between him and Coco. Moving to the right forum.

Seasonal Event Admin Conduct

Post by RaveRadbury » #608121

As we're switching to a policy discussion here's a new OP:

In the time I've participated in this community I've seen a handful of actions taken by admins that have had negative effects during a seasonal event or in the aftermath. I think that this is a bad look for us, especially considering that seasonal events are outward-facing to the greater SS13 community and in some cases are streamed. It's also a disservice to the team that put all the work in, especially considering that some of the team members aren't admins and don't have access to the tools being used. Losing pop in the middle of a ball or having a tournament cut short because of itchy nuke fingers is frustrating, a lot of work goes into this stuff.

The complaint and peanut thread both have touched on the point that we don't have clear definitions about what would constitute event interference and when an event begins and ends.

So then, let's talk about it:
  • When does a seasonal event end and begin?
  • What qualifies as uninvolved admin interference in a seasonal event?
  • What expectations do we have of our administrative staff as community representatives and how do those expectations apply during a promoted seasonal event?

citrus is far to nice to actually stay that the people who show up on the day of events without doing any of the work just to interfere are incredible fuckheads.

I feel as if this problem could be easily avoided by appointing an ingame announcer and telling other admins to shush for the entirety of the event; bonus points if said commentator is chosen for their level head granted that they may have to make decisions on the fly. I think a large enough chunk of admins enjoy relishing in attention enough that unless they’re denied a platform, a noticeable portion will elect to use it everytime. I say this as someone who definitely suffers from this vice as well. Just outline what admins can do better next time, and a complaint will actually have a foundation (not that just complaints should fuel this decision; rather a desire for a smoother event. It’s just that accountability isn’t possible when A. Firm guidelines aren’t layed out and B. No one is willing/able to hold anyone accountable).

these are separate servers, can't the admins txt/database just be limited to those who've actually signed up for the event/asked to be event staff?
