Update the word filter to better represent the OOC-IC terms of today

Post by Mothblocks » #615703

OOC-in-IC comes up a fair bit as admin, here's some of the most common, in order of most controversial to least controversial:
  • ERP -- Everyone has gotten their hyucks out of it over the years, but it is the OOC-in-IC a lot of admins won't touch. Even in the most good faith of uses, it's talking about people having sex or whatever, not about performing extensive in-character roleplay in the library. It is acknowledging that the world around you is roleplaying. Furthermore, it's regularly used by numbnuts to be jokingly creepy to others. Just say sex. I don't care about the poster.
  • Antag -- A regular one for admins to note for saying, and so makes sense for the word filter of today. Some will protest that "well it might make sense to shorten antagonist in world", but this excuse has been heard a dozen times and does not stop admins from ruling on it as OOC-in-IC, Space Law suggesting the phrase "enemy of the corporation", though everyone just says "is bad" or "is tot" anyway. I don't care about the in-game antag token.
Next is going off of what I see just by searching "OOC IC" or "netspeak" in notes. Players don't have access to this, but admins do. In here, off the cuff: "metagang" (and by extension "metafriend" and "meta gang"), "validhunting" (this and "valid hunting", but not valid on its own as it of course has too many genuine cases), and some currently unfiltered shorthands: jk, np, ur, gtfo, and idgaf.

Flavor of the month crud like "amongus", or "amogus" should also be on the chopping block. I don't know if "ඞ" would work on my updated filter PR, but food for thought.

Going through OOC in IC notes and adding the common offenders to the filter just makes sense. Very cool.

It seems to me only the words that have absolutely no cultural or contextual value belong on a censor list. The two words you list don't seem to fit that. Netspeak and racial slurs on the other hand make sense being censored.

Our servers are minimum LRP, which is not no RP. That means admins take action against terms that are excessively OOC. This is not new policy.

Why not have a corrective filter for words and/or phrases that are deemed to be not suitable rather than the message just not going through or even worse people getting punished for it such as the infamous and horrific "its X".

Somebody says: "its warops or antag" and the filter would change the message to "There are nuclear operatives threatening the station." or "enemy of the station".

filters shouldn't roleplay for you, you should simply learn to adjust to the bare minimum of rp asked, it'd be a nice thing to encourage

pro tip just say antagonist or call people joined at the hip instead of metabuddies.

I feel like ERP is used a lot because making jokes about people hanging out and saying "sex" as their activity of choice instead of "bro they're erping" has a vastly different mental connotation in my mind - it's a lot easier to make a joke that two of your friends are CLEARLY erping in the showers if you can't find them instead of saying "oh yeah two of my friends are having hot steamy shower sex", but maybe that's just me. Eroticism and promiscuity are not allowed on station. Especially not the R part.

LITERALLY 1984
I agree with Omegas post, ERP and sex have vastly different connotations but I get why you might want to nuke it.
Rest of the list is great, this has been a long time coming

i don't understand? what is the difference? sometimes with my irl friends if there's two alone in a room (doing whatever) we may be like "ahahaa what were you guys doing ;)" or "yeah they were fucking lol" you wouldn't say they're erping, so why would you say it in there, considering you're supposed to treat it like (sorta) real life?
if you add the HOT STEAMY part it does sound a lot more erotic than just saying "A and B are banging in dorms!"
if you wanted to not make it sound so lewd because it weirds you out you could just say "they're making out in the showers"
ERP is 100% an OOC term
"but the poster!" yeah, we also have the greentext book, funny fourth wall breaking jokes in the game are funny and they don't break immersion as much as someone saying two people are doing Erotic Roleplay (and clearly referring to just sex)

Plenty of people find it annoying or uncomfortable when people make erp jokes anyways, and while saying "theyre having sex in there" is certainly more loaded id like for people to move away from that insinuation either way. it being funny to some people also doesnt stop it from being ooc in ic. at the end of the day, all we lose by adding erp to the word filter is the annoying events where someone screams erp and a million morons rush in breaking down doors and walls and occasionally even lynching people, over an unfunny joke

I’m not totally gun ho about this at least for antag or valid or similar where the issue is not necessarily the word but how it’s used. I forget how the filter works but “antag(space here)” would be a lot more acceptable than “antag(wild here)”.

ERP, powergame, and other words that only have 1 other use and that’s playing a ttrpg in ss13 are however a lot more sensible.

I really don't think the no ERP sign compares the greentext. The greentext book is rarely present in rounds, I'm pretty certain you can find no ERP posters just about every round.
Plus when the greentext is present, people are free to call it the greentext. Why is the no ERP poster any different.

I don't really care about adding ERP to the filter, but remove the poster if you do.

Not their post, my post, I don't think the poster has any real authority since the admins decide if it stays or not. We as maintainers have actually talked about this before, and have decided its in the admins decision. Which means yes, we could remove the ERP poster as well, and I would very much want to.

I remade the filter recently. "antag" on its own is what would be filtered, not antag* (so you could still say "antagonist" if you so desire, and if deemed acceptable).

It would make more sense to just say “E” instead of ERP if you’re talking about the poster specifically, why would you mention whatever the R means and pornography when someone is being erotic? You don’t say PBJ for a sandwich with just Jelly on it or BLT if you’ve just put bacon on.

It’s like justifying the use of antag because there’s an antag token in the game, you’re not actually referring to the IC item you’re just using it as fallback when called out for bringing up the ooc concept.

the greentext book, the antag token, the hammer that jokes about banning you for no reason, the ERP poster, probably more!

I gotta agree with this. The game inherently has fourth wall breaking jokes in it, so people should be allowed to make SOME mild ones. Sometimes when I make a pun I turn my sprite to face south to 'stare directly into the camera'. I know, on occasion, I'll see someone straight up emote that they look into the camera and it's good for a small chuckle. It doesn't disrupt the round, it's a small bit of harmless fun. People saying ERP is the same.

Antag's one I think should be allowed, even if I don't use it myself, because it's like 'robust'. I once asked if someone saying 'You're just mad I robusted you' was OOC in IC and the admin said no because Robust, even used in the sense of combat prowess, is colloquial enough that it's just kinda a part of Space Lingo. And I can see that. Antag's just short for Antagonist, and if you DON'T know what someone is, whether they're a Syndicate infiltrator, a Heretic, a Changeling, or what have you, then just calling them an 'antagonist' is pretty reasonable. They're here to cause trouble and ANTAGONISE the station.

To reiterate, "antag" has been ruled as OOC-IC for as long as I remember. Searching "OOC%antag" on notes shows literal entire pages of dozens of admins ruling like this. If you say "antag" in a place an admin can see it, you have a very high chance of being noted for it. By not having it on the word filter, we are allowing people to shoot themselves in the foot.

we don't really agree though because i don't want ERP to be allowed since it's only used to refer to people having sex and it's one of the most common ones (and annoying, IMO)

I'm not saying that it isn't, I'm just saying that if it is we should probably consider 'Robust' when used to say 'Bro I robusted you' or whatever, as OOC in IC, because that's Game Terms. It's weird to say one's forbidden when the other isn't

Robust is an IC term as well as an OOC one, isn't it? Typically, when someone does something obviously OOC in IC, at least over radio, they get memed on by at least one person, to the tune of

";MAI IS ANTAG"
";BRIDGE"

receiving

";What's an antag?"
";She's a tag of what?"
But nobody does the cheeky, "What do you mean by robusted?"

Saying ERP should probably go because it can be used in a double-meta-layer sandwich of the characters themselves being accused of dreaming up and playing out erotic scenarios, but usually it isn't. It's just someone going "hey look at those [shitcurity, catgirls, MDs, etc.] ERPing"

My argument is either Antag should be considered an IC term as well as an OOC one, or Robust shouldn't be. They're both very much OOC terms, and there's no reason they should be treated differently.

This structure is really robust, it can withstand a beating!
Is that OOC?

That guy's robust as fuck man, killed us all.
Is this IC?

Even if it's technically IC in like a literal way, it's not how our community really uses it I don't think. At least when referring to people

I like "robust/robusted", it sounds like the cute future slang you hear in some sci fi like "geeked" or "derezzed" or something. Gives a little bit of depth, and has a basis in real world vernacular, just applied more broadly.

Eroticism and promiscuity are not allowed on station. Especially not the R part.
i don't understand? what is the difference? sometimes with my irl friends if there's two alone in a room (doing whatever) we may be like "ahahaa what were you guys doing ;)" or "yeah they were fucking lol" you wouldn't say they're erping, so why would you say it in there, considering you're supposed to treat it like (sorta) real life?
if you add the HOT STEAMY part it does sound a lot more erotic than just saying "A and B are banging in dorms!"
if you wanted to not make it sound so lewd because it weirds you out you could just say "they're making out in the showers"
ERP is 100% an OOC term
"but the poster!" yeah, we also have the greentext book, funny fourth wall breaking jokes in the game are funny and they don't break immersion as much as someone saying two people are doing Erotic Roleplay (and clearly referring to just sex)
I agree with Omega here. Saying "ERP" does not break anyone's immersion, it's basically just a stand-in for "fucking" as you said but it's much, much softer, and the alternatives you list sound lewder honestly.
It's a word that has taken on a different meaning through being used as a joke for probably 10 years, it's no longer really considered an OOC term culturally. Words can change overtime. I think it's very silly to actually filter this for the purpose of not breaking people's immersion and enforcing an RP standard on LRP. Netspeak is obviously different because using netspeak is textspeak, and your character is supposed to be speaking.

At the very least if it's about the player LRP roleplay experience, perhaps the players should be the ones making the decision as opposed to a singular coder. I can almost guarantee if you held a poll it would be overwhelming towards keeping the word.

and enforcing an RP standard on LRP
LRP is not NRP. Blatantly acknowledging that the world you're in is a game (which "ERP" does) is OOC-IC.
perhaps the players should be the ones making the decision as opposed to a singular coder
Policy discussion threads are decided on by the three head admins, one of which is voted on by players. Not a """single coder""", which is fairly petty and passive aggressive (especially considering I am also a game admin).

you're basically using erp as a euphemism when the english lexicon is caulk full of euphemisms because you'll learn anything can be one.

instead of breaking everyone's immersion, Nyanaroni and Captain Worfentinkle could be ___ in dorms 4:

bonking
banging
bwoinking
pinging
panging
zoinking
splattering
battering
slap crafting
practicing krav maga
toolboxing
wrenching
screwdriving
welding
absorbing
changelinging
starting a cult
starting a revolution
calling eachothers shuttle
engaging in xenobiology
speedrunning chemistry
pda bombing
emagging
eswording
going braindead
getting brain damage
rad storming
ash storming
fighting megafauna
making megafauna
arresting
gulagging

but try your own, anything can be a euphemism with context

May i ask. What's the difference between LRP and MRP ? Because if LRP doesn't allow for minor breach of RP, then what does it allow more than MRP. Apart from doing jobs different from the one you got roundstart, or murderbone.

LRP has more tiders, powergamers, chaos, and cussing.
MRP has more oversensitive staticnamers, xeno metagangs, and cowardly antags.
The rules contribute to the culture somewhat, but that's a bit outside of the scope here.

I don't know, i feel like filtering erp just erases a bit of the culture of the game in a way. Joking about erp is something everyone did at least once IC. Seems a bit sad to just, remove the word entierly.

ERP is better than the usual euphemism because ERP has the connotation that any participants are 40 something neckbeards pretending to be teen catgirls or some shit
Saying that people in dorms 4 are "fucking" is too soft of a dissuasion, some people look down on people because they dont fuck but NOBODY looks down on people because they dont ERP

Such a lame thread. You are ruining the joy of spawning “no erp” posters around 2 ERPers.

Admins are already free to punish for the stuff you have issues with, trust them and the headmins to make the proper judgement calls when they see someone taking about amogus in chat :)

The rules have been fine for punishing bad faith actors for as long as I can remember, there is simply a failure to act. Of course, some might cause backlash, but that’s just something to consider when you’re making a judgement - is your ruling gonna look really dumb when viewed by the players? Is it against how most people enjoy playing?

Changes like this would serve no real purpose other than to further tighten the noose around the necks of an increasingly restricted player base. Just let them enjoy the game, man.

We have decided that ERP and antag should be added to the soft filter, which asks for confirmation before either sending or redacting your message. There are legitimate uses of these words in an IC context (both appear in-game), but for the most part they are used as OOC terms IC.

Words added to the hard filter for OOC IC:
ERPer
ERPing
ERPs
ERPed
antags
metafriend(s)
metagang(s)
validhunting
validhunter(s)
validhunted
amogus
amongus

Words added to the hard filter for netspeak:
jk
np
ur
gtfo
idgaf
ikr

Headmin Votes:
Dragomagol: Yes
NamelessFairy: Yes
RaveRadbury: Yes
