I was under the impression that we needed to attach BYOND accounts to post, but it's been so long since I've done that that I forget. Are these bots getting more sophisticated?

What are proxys

You don't understand the spam bots and how they work.

They work by spamming sites to get customers obviously, but this is a two pronged attack.

Their secondary goal is to get SEO and tagging and listing in google search. Which doesn't work because of how Google changed their algorithm to prevent this, but they still do this.

They don't care if the forum is dead. They are that the google search engine caches and lists their page.


That's why I've told admins several times, if there's an spambot in a crawlable public area of the forum not to delete it, but rather edit the message to something like "tgstation awesome space station 13 community", let the crawler crawl on it and update their caches, then delete it.

This counteracts the spambot's goal.



However currently the bans and trash section are not crawled by bots due to MSO's configuration, and it's the default forum until verification. So posts there can merely be discarded.

I thought someone pm'd me accidentally (the pm got deleted, so only title remained) and I uncovered some conspiracy.

real talk though this is getting kind of out of hand. every day i basically just check the "birthdays today" and (multiple times per day) the "our newest member" accounts and permaban all of them. these bots are all around 30-45 years old and have websites that try to sell you viagra, about half of them in russian.

maybe if we put like a keyword on the server that it shows you when you join in the MotD or something that you have to enter when creating an account here that'd stop em?
