I know how to extract icons for things like items and simple mobs, but how do I produce images of areas like
this one or of whole spacemen like
this?

I can't speak to the human sprites, but map images are sourced from
fullbox.png, which is somehwhat out of date but still recent enough to not be that much of a problem. PROTIP: In Photoshop (and probably GIMP), you can set the grid to be 32px by 32px and then enable snapping or whatever so your marquee is selecting whole tiles, not split ones.
In theory, we could render the map with an external tool, but that's a long-term project.
EDIT: PS if you're uploading an image that's smaller than 32x32 pixels, pad your canvas to 32px with a transparent (no) fill

Both of those are just edited screenshots taken from in-game with F2, they're saved to the screenshots folder in the BYOND install directory.
In theory you could get the human sprites by pasting individual sprites layers onto each other in an image editor, but that's honestly more effort than just loading up the game.

It would be easy to whip up a script to do this for us. That's where all the ID badges in people's signatures came from.

Does F2 turn your ghost alpha to 0?
If not you might need to VV yourself and do that.
Also if you want anything specific I could take a shot before round start?

Lizard with gladiator uniform and helmet = Ash Walker

Not really, ashwalkers are a special mutantrace that has slightly different sprites (I think) and, like many other lavaland spawns, messes with genetics and Envy's Knife.

Taking pics is pretty easy for the wiki.
Whenever I take a image of a mob for use on a job page what I do is generally take a picture of one in game as they are looking south.
The best way to do this is on a offline game by simply downloading the code and going from there, easier to control the image that way.
Then I use Paint.Net to crop the image down to a 64x64 image, then I use that.

I just print screen, copy it to paint, then crop it with the imgur tools. It's a really quick process usually.

Turn debug verbs on
Right click > possess object on an item near centre
Take clean screenshot.
