Code bounty: Winterland mining area

Post by JusticeGoat » #512734

I want there a chance to spawn winterland the opposite of lavaland that uses the snow sprites.
There will need to be new sprites made like ice chasms and maybe thin ice that once stepped on causes you to fall though and take thermal damage.
Will need snow storms to replace the ash storms.

This would be really, really cool. I hope someone takes you up on it. Next up is desertland that has sandstorms. And swampland that has acid rainstorms.

I feel all tingly with anticipation.

You're probably gonna want to make two bounties, one for spriting and one for coding.

Would we want to sprite snow versions of the lava mobs and whatever? I feel like it would need a lot more work than just the plain snow tiles, at least if it would be a regular part of the game.

Don't forget to add a new snowland sprite for the station's parallax

sounds cool and I'd take on the bounty if the following things are adressed:
- What do you expect to happen to ruins?
- Does everything in lavaland need a new sprite?
- What do we do about lava? We basically need something like it.

I reccomend you get this idea past oranges first because I can imagine he won't like this feature and might close it, which would be a waste of your money.

Lava could be replaced with lakes of liquid nitrogen.
Step inside and become an ice sculpture in matter of seconds.

Yeah, we have some pretty neat ice traps.

Just reicon it and change up the ice-traps so they rapidly damage you if you don't get out of it, and will permanently keep you in an ice block if you die inside it. (Unless someone breaks the ice-block to get you out of it.)

Ice Dragon (Spews liquid nitrogen instead of lava)

The Yeti ( Bubblegum)

Now what would be an ice variant of the Legion? A giant snowman?

Could just use the liquid plasma from Snowdin for the lava.

And a skeleton fits perfectly on lavaland or on winterland.

Idea if someone adds a wendigo or something:

Code it to attack rapidly fast but with weak damage. Basically, imagine fist of the north star but no stuns and on an simplemob that does really weak damage so it isn't unfair. Another example would be the fast zombies in a hl2 mod called Smod Outbreak however I have no good footage of that.

You could also go for the Until Dawn/goonstation way. Just know that the Until Dawn way would be a really fast wendigo that also one hit kills. That isn't fun to fight against imo.
Shadowflame909 wrote:Now what would be an ice variant of the Legion? A giant snowman?
Reed Glover already made sprites for a snow legion (not the boss variant). The issue is that coding a legion mob is really difficult.

We could make the snow legion right now if someone was willing to do so AND knew how to code it properly.

Re: Code bounty: Winterland mining area

Post by Whoneedspacee » #519040

nevermind i made it at least functional

took some shit from snowdin ripped up the ruins code and am gonna make some unique ruins and bosses

probably gonna have wendigo king wendigo type shit its called ice moon in the code at least so gotta have goon refs

are we thinking this should be a seperate admin map command to choose and random if it wasn’t chosen?

i’m thinking this could be an entirely different environment and require hardsuits as well as have dangers of its own

i’m thinking some set pieces could have alternate parts as well in a hilberts hotel kind of way where you can go down into some cave area to fight a boss and such not directly on the surface

will need some base mobs as well, not totally sure what they should be or if i should copy from existing snow shit

some basic ruins ideas would be nice as well since i need to re-make some or see if they fit the theme

also we probably don’t want shit like tendrils either so i’m not sure what to replace those with

do we prefer the same lavaland map template or is this an excuse for me to shake it up and shove it in a different location with an entire different map design

im thinking most bosses should be below the surface and environmental hazards become more dangerous but so do the rewards, a contrast from lavaland where you just move up for more shit and no more danger

dm me over discord if you’d prefer to do this in an easier place to talk Space#0789

One of the key points about Lavaland is that it should never require hardsuits, just an air tank. Changing that will screw miners royally unless you give them a free suit on the new mining base.

Just bear in mind the restrictions that a roundstart miner has, and the benefits of current lavaland for other jobs (like atmos). The ease of access/lack of starting suits for default lavaland and the presence of random roundstart gases are important elements in current station balance so there should be something there to compensate for the potential loss of both.

For example, how will gulag function in a hardsuit necessary environment?

Gonna hold back on showcases for this because I’d like for it to be a surprise for most people.

Haven’t started work on the base mobs but we just got the first ruin done (thanks respii) and I already got an idea for one with a boss encounter.

The actual area works fine, the lighting bugs in the video were mostly a combination of deathsquad thermal goggles lighting them up fullbright, as well as not updating my byond version so meson lighting was weird.

I’ll see what I can do on lighting looking different on ice moon but I haven’t tried anything like that thus far don’t even know if it’s possible.

The openspace turf is replacing the chasms currently as well so you can see what’s below you.

tl;dr
Things on my list right now are:
-Ice moon base mobs
-See if I can change lighting on ice moon
-New ruins unique to ice moon (multiz as well)
-Take full advantage of openspace turf for puzzles and such possibly
-Add unique ambient noises to ice moon
-HOW DOES THE STATION GET GLASS IF THERES NO SAND
-Move the stupid ladder near base to a random ruin so there’s no super easy way back up

Let me know if I missed anythin you think should be added or changed
also how do they get glass please help me

Also the environment won’t be hardsuit necessary, the snow will slow you down but that should be fine for general mobs and most of the bosses that require speed will have arenas.

It’ll definitely be harder to prep huge as fuck arenas for big bosses in 2 seconds with plasma cutters at least, though still possible, just difficult with all the dangers on the lower area and having to deal with snow and rocks falling on the lower level.

I'm triggered by the fact that you didn't just attach the knife to the KA and used them separately.

Otherwise that looks really impressive, can't wait to see it when its done.

I was thinking about doing some mobsprites for ice themed regular wildlife, namely something nautical themed like a lobster/crab/shrimp abomination. I'll let ya know if I get anything that looks good enough to use.
Great work on this thus far!

It’s truly fine, I didn’t do this for the code bounty and I’m way more well off than most.

It would genuinely hurt my psyche to know that I took money from someone who needed it especially right now.

Either way don’t feel guilty or pressured to do it, the change was received well so I’m more thankful you put out the idea tbh.
