Time incident occured: 2/3/2016 8:40~ EST

So it was an Op Round and the ops have just declared war. It would have been a fun, interactive, combative round between crew and ops... Until some admin memer decided it would be the perfect time to test an unknown virus that wound up killing 90% of the station before ops even got there, badly ruining the round for both sides. I couldn't even get an absolute confirmation it was admin-induced since they were hiding from chat or something, but from chat and the fact it was a never before seen virus it definitely seemed done by admin.

Ah, should have gone into more detail. It was some sort of untested Lizard virus thing that made you Hiss uncontrollably, then your tailbone would hurt, and then you horrifically die in 10 seconds of literal butthurt.

Adminbus was testing J_Madison's new viruses, and it went catastrophically wrong. There was a disease that didn't do anything until the last phase, where it killed you in a matter of seconds. To put it in perspective: I couldn't whip up a cure before I died, and I had only been infected a few minutes at best.

I wasn't stealthed, I joined right as the round ended, so I have no idea what happened in this round

I was asked to test merge this.

I test merged it and spawned a virus during rev (lesser zombie). It didn't spread past the first person (self cured?)

I spawned another (Hemorrhage) and it spread about, but it was a slow acting virus, so it was cured after a bit of drama (and security still won, even).

Next round I (without checking the round type, and I missed the war announcement tabbing back and forth) spawned a third virus (lizarditis). I opened up the panel to spawn scalerot as well, couldn't find it, got turned into a syndie-borg, cancelled the new virus spawn, and deadminned.

I didn't realize it'd be as lethal as it was, and I might not have spawned it had I seen it was nuke, but given the last two viruses got cured so easily, I mighta gone ahead anyway.


tl;dr I tested something. The test was met with negative feedback, and was removed from the server the round after, so another PR could be tested. Better it be tested now than before it gets merged for real and sits on server for weeks or months.

I'm sorry your round sucked, but I am not sorry for testing something, and I plan to continue testing things in the future.

Turns you into a blob zombie on death. Some people randomly just self-cure and generate anti-bodies, its part of virus code.

That is not a very helpful test for something that someone wants to add to the real game, is it? I sometimes announce these tests, I sometimes don't if I think it would cause too much meta and behaviour change.

This isn't all that of a big thing for me. This isn't a really a complaint, it's just the only forum to sort of bring it attention

It's more of a "That thing that happened really went wrong, let's all have a little precaution and double checking before everyone gets Ebola'd". Any other round I would have laughed my ass off of everyone dropping dead from Liggeritis but it's just unfortunate it happened to be an Op round where it's universal that everyone would have fun if it went untouched.

Why do you test viruses in a live game and not on a thunderdome somewhere on yourself or on a ghosts you pullled from the warp for the testing?

If it was a weapon, sure local test it.

Kind of hard to gauge how well a virus spreads and player reaction to the unknown unless its on a working server. During nuke ops was a shitty choice though.

Sure, it's good to test the spread, however, we also have those greytide bots which can pickup diseases, etc so it'd be good to test on a local first

A grey tide bot isn't gonna run to medbay, organize a cure while dealing with the game mode, etc.

I'll keep that in mind. I've noted this down and the next commit will have amendments.
The great difficulty with self testing is the tester knows what to expect (infecting me with a virus is almost impossible).
