J_Madison's Winterstorm

Synopsis from https://tgstation13.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=6859;

Progress:
Spoiler:
All on planet areas mapped out.
Endgame/escape/starter areas need to be mapped.
Underground mapped out in some areas.
Stairs/ladders need to be made functional.

Need to do:
Starting cutscene needs to be coded.
Endgame mechanics need to be coded.
Stairs/zlevel traversing mechanics need to be coded.
SNPCs need to be coded.
During an escape to centcomm, one of the escape shuttle's thrusters overload and explode, spiralling the shuttle out of hyperspace.

Spiralling out of hyperspace, the shuttle's emergancy module crash lands into the nearest friendly or neutral territory; a planet locked in eternal winter, in a dense frozen tiaga.
The lucky crew on the shuttle awaken to find large emegancy shelters deployed, the shuttle intact, and it's GPS module heavily damaged.
The escape pods following the escape shuttle's GPS have crash landed into the tiaga, and local communications have yielded no response.

The crew must survive and repair the shuttle's GPS module and request a pickup, or find another way to escape.

Gameplay is more lifeweb exploration, survival, and PVE type of gameplay.

Jobs are drasically changed in terms of gameplay;
Spoiler:
Security - First line of defense. Leaders of any exploration team.
Miners - First line of offense, vital to high risk exploration.
Cargo - Transport. One of few crew to have access to vehicles.
Engineering - repairs, exploration, expansion, destruction.
Assistants - Explorers, exploration fodder.
Medical - limited medical goods and chemicals, careful and conservative doctors.
Research - recycling and using what goods can be salvaged.
Services - crew support/alternative medicine.
AI and silicons - limited function. Silicons have extremely limited electric sources.
Game modes:
Spoiler:
Traitor/DA - enabled.
Rev - disabled.
Nuke - I am considering WarOps only on this one.
Cult and Clock cult - enabled, objective is to escape with followers, no summon objective.
Wizard - disabled.
Map features:
Hostile NPCs.
Friendly NPCs.
Neutral NPCs.
Bosses.
3 zlevel system hopefully; underground, surface, roofs/stairs to upper floor.
Massive wilderness to scavenge and explore.

My concerns on things that stop this from becoming real;
Spoiler:
Integration into codebase.
Massive change of direction and gameplay.
Small development team.
Development resources focused on Kor's planet development.
SNPC coding and resource issues.
Map size and zlevel mechanic issues.
Considerable rework of game start and endgame mechanics.
Why I created this project in the first place;
Spoiler:
Lifeweb died.
Lack of on planet space station.
Removal of away missions due to abuse.
Old, repetitive, boring gameplay of SS13.
Lack of survival gameplay.
New direction for gameplay.
Map editor screenshots:
Spoiler:

Old abandoned hospital where cruel experiments occured.
Spoiler:

Abandoned outpost and quarters.
Spoiler:

Crash landed shuttle and emergancy departments.

Cautious exploring.
Spoiler:

Discussing the mapping/spriting/coding efforts involved in creating a version of SS13 that takes place on a planet surface.

I memo'd kor over IRC about it. I didn't get a response at the time. He could have let me know at any time, or moved/locked the thread.

I remember being pretty hype based on your initial concepts for this thing, and i think that once the base elements are in it would work well as an alt planet map

Did the code get deleted or shut down or something.
I was waiting for it to be in the public domain.

It's not dead at all
Idk why you would think it was

It's never going to be public btw
Randy will die with the source and that's how it should be

A winter event sounds cooler [no pun intended] than just making it a separate map tbh.

I'll think about making an actual space station on a frozen planet.

The focus currently for me is to move away from space and onto solid land.

It shouldn't be too hard to implement weather. It's only a modification of Kor's existing weather system.
The only issue I see is how heavy of a load on the server is footprints in the snow, and snow mechanics.

Well if you need snow mechanics, look to how absolution station does it for their snow planet, which is that basically the turf changes underfoot for every (about three or more) step you take on a unshovelled snow tile (which is basically removing snow upper layer of turf). There are also other threads which touch upon the topic of a cold world. Tiles not covered by a room reset the turf after a storm meaning tracks get blown away.

Re:Tidally locked planet & Iceland (no not that iceland): I got there with a sort of idea that was meant to be directed at mining but could apply to this secondary/alternative planetstation concept in the fact that i imagined two mining sites existing simultaneously at opposite ends of the planet. Eitherway the mobs there are near fully resistant to brute but not to lasers (opposite of lavaland) and exploring glacial ice caves in the subterrain layer sounds cool, especially if its infested with Yeti's as opposed to lava caves & goliaths as primary natural antagonists.

Image

Re:Skeleton Colonists: Everyone loved these, from the admin test they worked well in a cold enviroment for pretending to be eskimo's like in the current snowy biodome mobs you can find.

As to a actual note on the presented idea, if you're applying pine trees and a colder enviroment, could you also hopefully add tree saplings or growth, given that cutting down a tree (though there's no way to make wooden girders, i've tried and spriting is hard because either too light or too dark wood sprites) will probably be a common thing to do to clear space or build bonfires via the tribal crafting tab for warmth.

> Also relax and chill, Kor's still got to roll out his concepts yet, and you can make amendments ontop of his with collaboration to help make a rounded but also different variation of planetstation.

Im in full support of a tundra/boreal enviroment, in which you have to kill local monsters for their fur and meat to survive as you roast it over a fire you're huddling around for warmth.

Some assistant will find me sleeping in another spaceman's guts for warmth, wrapped in a blanket of yeti-furs in a tent made out of mammoth bones & pelts.

Its just on the outside of the soviet union's borders, probably very northern asia like the northern jungles of tibet or Asia

> In regards to local species, lets just say that the Soviet Union imported Caiman's & variety of snakes for protection issues, heck why not say that the Soviet Union BUILT the forest entirely with imported plants where it was warm & temperate to support life.

Progress marches on.

I'm going to port my favourite and first SS13 map - metastation - into snow.

Mining will be asteroid. PVM content will be on the metastation wilderness. All space is replaced with heavy snow.

Gameplay will be pretty much the same, except more winter clothes and exploration mechanics.
Many crew members will be able to get hunting rifles (reduced damage to humans).
Blizzards will occur across zlevels.

To do:
Zlevel transitions
Modified ruins spawning
Terrain generation
Weather

Future hiring/paid jobs:
Mob and item sprites (basic mobs)
Advanced mobs/boss code
SNPCs

depends on following;
passing checks/vetting/safety.
experience and background.
time and avaliability.

nienhaus worked on zero-notice and bulk sprites during a time when no spriters were willing/avaliable to help me on demand. he worked on race, objects, clothing, weapons, structures, and receieved a undisclosed amount per bulk commission.

most of my comish payments has fallen in the region of 20-60 dollars depending on many factors.

I've got a small list of people that are my go-to, but that was some time ago. they may not be around or avaliable to help anymore and I fully understand and appreciate the work they've done.

Armhulen wrote:It's fucking hilarious that jmad is soloing his own planet station while the real one is deadass
I don't see it as funny. It's a shame there's a lot of petty minute details that dilute the decision making process and the lack of co-operation and cohesion.
Once you minimise the decision making, it's down to having a good supply chain going for the code, the sprites, sound ect running smoothly.

I give the orders, I get the code, I give the description, I get the sounds, I give the concept, I get the sprites/art.

It means a case of me checking how you are personality wise, how you view me, and who you associate with.

I don't do it entirely for "professionalism on SS13", I do it for my own safety and to ensure whomever I'm hiring in the mindset I'd like them to be.

yeah. it's a case of being able to pick and choose. maybe I do things differently, maybe I scratch at minute details.

it's like movie directors being impossible to work with because of how controlling, unstable, or insane they are.

I need to check that you're willing to work with me, you're willing to accept what I want and how I want it, and you're capable of doing those things.

if it's about our previous interactions, don't sweat it danno; kor was one of the first admins to give me a note for bad behaviour but I've comished half dozen artwork from her through him. just because we got off on the wrong foot doesn't mean I'm gonna disqualify you.

current priorities:
zlevel terrain generation
ruin generation
blizzards

Currently done;
small parts of snowdin into ruins
metastation is now snow
several small 10x10 forest patches (will be part of random terrain generation).

winter mobs priority
wolves
bears
trolls
penguins
owls
rabbits
leopard
mammoth
reindeer
oxen
Spoiler:
potential mob ideas;
abominable snowman
frost royal family (already sprited from old projects)
yuki-onna
next priority
underground mining
freon lakes

considerations;
reusing snowdin assets
using underground outpost as the underground mining hub.

Why would we need lore?

Lets just say out of two possiblities, that all life in the universe is mirrored by coincidence or design.

Or that Nanotren selectively chooses fauna to populate slightly terraformed planets with habitable conditions with imported stock from across the galaxy.
You can probably tie these winter mobs into your side project of domestcatable livestock by establishing 'genus' species between the farmyard cows and the oxen etc to sort of function as different temprature & atmospheric replacements for farmyard animals being immune entirely to the conditions around them.

Re: J_Madison's Winterstorm

by J_Madison
Here's some justifications and lore I made up;
Earth like planet that slowly cooled and developed a freon mantle/core. Cold things fall, hot things rise, slowly chilling the planet and creating a planet whose centre is almost absolute zero and a surface that is extremely chilly.
Animals on the originally earth like planet slowly adapted to the cold via accelerated natural selection.

Several earth native animals were part of a fauna relocation service by Nanotrasen after caving demands from the Animal Rights Consortium over monkey based terror attacks. Unfortunately this included more aggressive wildlife to also be relocated.

Several ships including the New Russian galactic state circus and GUCN were in mid transport of many culturally or scientifically important animals when it crashed due to; fuel leak, ice fragment strike, ARC terrorism, drunken pilot.

I need appropriate mobs to populate the forest and eternal winter lands and to create a biodiverse environment.

for war ops

maybe add some ancient ruin or whatever that has a big spooky glowy rock that you are -not- allowed to remove or the planet splits in half or super evil lost-eqsue shit starts happening and you all get sold to satan

crew's job would be to prevent the nuke team from removing the crystal, nuke team wants to remove it because its valuable. doesn't even have to be a nuke team think like scavenger privately funded exploration and retrival or whatever team

scav's have a ship that lands in the middle of the forrest, scavs have tactical survival winter gear and shit for scaling rocks, blending in, killing wildlife and natives or whatever that try to stop them from taking the artifact

if you have dantum antags or whatever or like consistant rounds not where its just one antag and that antag dies and then the round ends but if you have like decently long rounds, defending the artifact successfully should like appease some ancient gods and result in the surviving crew recieving some wizard powers or god tier ancient weapons (or simple shit like food and clothing since they're probally all bleeding to death and missing limbs)

also since its cold as fuck, the overlay we have for damage (the redness around your screen)

maybe have someone edit that so its like ice freezing over a camera lens, to give that "ITS COLD AS FUCK" feeling a better presence

Will consider the hud suggestion. I've given ops atvs for snow transport.
More news on the dollar to continue.

-

Leoz is working on zlevel terrain/ruin generation and transition.

Once done and perfected will begin testing winter metastation before winter storm goes green for production.

Currently working on a plan for a boss. Be on lookout for sprinting and boss code jobs soon.

Currently planning a underground icy mining. Keep ear out for sprinting and code jobs here.

Finally will be replacing magboots and jet packs with... snowboards/skis or snow shoes?

Heads of staff with hardsuit access will likely get atv.

Ops shuttle now has even more turrets.
AI sat has thicker walls and more turrets.
Outer brig areas, permabrig, and security areas have double thickness walls and windows.

Why these changes?
All a crewmember needs is a winter coat and an oxygen tank to start robbing the brig.

This adds significant delay, and operatives can still explosively breach the area.

repukan suggested a burrowing boss

I'm thinking snake, eater of worlds, maybe the AI plays against you in a game of snake. be sure not to be eaten or you'll take damage from every segment that passes over you until the tail of the snake/worm.

don't run into the snake, and certainly don't get walled in by it.

Looking for PVMers of all experience levels to test bosses and mobs with varying levels of equipment within the next few months.

Bosses will be restricted to mining based weaponary except in large teams. This is due to the huge health pool bosses generally have.

You will get first chances and opportunity to test the latest bosses and content, and potentially learn the boss mechanics in it's early stages.
I'll be requesting a blackout on strategies, content, and general disclosure during the test period if you are chosen.
