The Event Workshop

Post by Stickymayhem » #390938

Welcome to the Event Workshop.

The concept behind this forum (and discord channel) is to bring together mappers, admins and players with great ideas or RP to create bigger production-value events. Admins in real-time can do quite a lot in the middle of a round, even more with some pre-round build mode prep, but there are limits, and we can push those limits with some help from the community.

Essentially, these are living breathing away missions admins can run with real NPCs played by real players. When I was a player I dreamed of being able to run events and I'm glad I get to do that now, but more players deserve a hand in that fun. I like to think of it as something of a D&D Campaign. Players don't like being railroaded, but they love new playgrounds and with missions actually populated by people, and brought to life by admins, we could really make some incredible experiences.

So here's what we need:
  • Mappers: Of course the key part of this is people willing to salvage away missions or make them from scratch for events like this. Luckily since they'll be run by admins, there are a lot of corners that can be cut.
  • Players who enjoy storytelling and SS13 lore, who want to inject some simple storylines (Think D&D module, not epic novel. We want to avoid railroading)
  • Players who want to play RP as key NPCs. A common issue in events is that an admin can only be in one place at a time. Multiple players in multiple real roles following the same guidelines can be a real immersive experience.
  • Interested Coders: This is less necessary, but a certain McGuffin might need to be a specialist item, or things like shuttles might need tweaking to be more event friendly. Not a massive priority but would be great if it happened.
  • Ideas: This is one place where Ideamen do help. Post a thread in this sub-forum with your basic idea for an event, see if it inspires anyone, and organize in the events-workshop
The possibilities are pretty awesome. Simple away missions could give way to grand multi-part adventures, with permanent in-game ramifications, access to new research items after saving an important scientist, or upon failure, a new powerful syndicate tool is developed. There's a lot of space here for creative people to do awesome stuff.

If you're interested, post in this thread with whatever you'd like to contribute, and join the #events-workshop channel on discord to poke your head in and bounce some ideas off each-other.

I've always liked the idea of more fleshed-out events, as long as they don't step on any toes and don't fall apart into mindless fighting from either side (at least, unintentionally.) I'd be willing to help out with pretty much anything here, having done a bit of all of them when I briefly had Coder rank thanks to clockcult and was able to run some admin-sanctioned events with it, like the Colosseum of Fools. Overall, it sounds cool, though I'm still not sold that the players will like events happening more often.
I'm an ex-coder for /tg/. I made the original versions of clockcult, shadowlings, revenants, His Grace, and other stuff.
I don't play, code, or participate in the community, but I occasionally post dumb stuff in the hut.

This is a cool idea and I'm up for being an NPC, but the part about permanent in-game ramifications has some potential issues. If someone is tasked to save a scientist, and they never play science, don't particularly like science, and really like the idea of new syndicate items there's some potential there for a conflict of interest.
If I get ling as part of some event where someone is researching a blood test its going to be a little hard to give it my all considering that OOC I'd really like to see someone develop a blood test for lings.

Players won't be aware of what the effects will be, and it'll always be a benefit somewhere. It's just about the benefit, you have your name as a part of a story that actually played out. You're part of /tg/station history, even if it's just as part of a wiki update entry. You get to meme on people both ICly and OOCly, "You're welcome for the plasmatronograph nerd, I was on the ground when we found it on Deathstroid Beta-15"

It's 6am and I totally edited your post instead of quoting it excuse my retardation pls

I’d definitely be down to be an NPC or some sort of role within an event.
I play Boris Pepper.

it'd be p. cool if you added an "advanced lore" page to the wiki where it goes through the current lore and new lore that happens as each event is done.
