You're missing the point, but not by much.

It all goes back to WWII. Russia had 30 million dead in that war. 30 MILLION. That was the moment when every Russian promised to themselves and to the future generations to never, EVER let Germany become powerful again. And they meant it. Germany was broke, split in half and kicked into the ground. The threat seemed to be over.

Fast forward to the nineties. Russia had lost the cold war, because communism is cancer and never works. They fell into the hands of drunkards and con men. USA took charge of Europe and started to pour money into it, especially Germany, turning it into a powerhouse and propping it up as the new leader of the EU.

Enter Putin. He looks at the situation and remembers the promise. He remembers that his brother died in the siege of Leningrad, and his other family members who suffered at the hand of the Germans. He has no fear, except for the one single fear he shares with all his countrymen: Germany. So he gets to work.

First, Germany must be isolated from his powerful allies. The rest of the EU must be manipulated into hating Germany. The economic crisis works wonders for that. He bites a chunk off Ukraine to sow fear among his enemies, and make them scramble. The UK must be taken out of the picture. Cue Brexit. The USA must be set against the EU. Cue Trump. France is a setback. If he can't get EU countries to split from the EU, they must be broken up from the inside. Cue Catalunya. Next one is Italy, but you'll have to wait until February for that.

There's much work still to do. But the end goal is clear. Germany must never, EVER become powerful again.

The Russians don't forget.

big data is the only credible threat to democracy in this day and age

DemonFiren wrote:big data is the only credible threat to democracy in this day and age
Big data is merely the latest manifestation of the age-old threat to democracy- the unequal power relationships that corrode the idea of equal representation.

Consider: if there existed no class of empowered individuals, with their own interests distinct from those of people in general, would we be concerned about the accumulation of data?

Of course not, because the existence and analysis of the data itself is not what is troubling- it is the idea that a certain class of people have exclusive access to this data, and both the means and motive to use it in their own interests against the interests of others.

One can, after all, imagine a highly transparent yet egalitarian society (a la Eclipse Phase) in which the availability of massive amounts of data about individuals is merely culturally odd to us, rather than actively troubling as is the case with big data.

Speaking more in the philosophical abstract- the notion of democracy and the notion of unequal power relationships are fundamentally opposed.

The core notion of democracy is that every person should have an equal say in government.

But an unequal power relationship, by definition, includes the ability to influence or direct how others will act- and there is no compelling reason or way to avoid this being applies to government.

It follows then that anything that gives one person power over another- whether economic, racial, informational, cultural, or forcible- ought to be avoided, or at least minimized to the greatest extent that is possible in practice, if we are committed to the notion that every person ruled over by a government ought have an equal say in that government.

Sounds about right
It's not the data you should be concerned about, thats out there anyway.
It's how it's going to be used against you to get things done that you don't want.

Not even talking big conspiracies, just simple stuff too. Like getting you the right personalized ads to manipulate you into buying things you don't want. Or cherrypicking social media posts(If you use that junk) to make you look bad.
Things like that are a problem too

Isn't the PLA notoriously corrupt (haha, but which military isn't!)? Xi already made a big show of political corruption cleanups so this'll probably be more of that.

70/135 is still over 50%

Yeah well, flick to Parliament TV once in a while and count the number of empty seats (or count the amount of full ones, probably easier)

In other news, Rajoy has disbanded the catalunyan parliament, unionist (anti-secession) parties are expected to win the new elections, and Puidgemont has fled to Belgium to avoid arrest. Seems like the whole fuss is over and honest-working citizens can go back to their lives.

It's even funnier when you realize that British Trident missile commanders are able to launch their missiles without authorization (they don't have "nuclear codes" or anything like that). Everyone is worried about Kim or Trump ending the world but it turns out that doomsday could've easily been triggered by a drunk british commander fellated by the XO in a drug-induced stupor.

During the cold war the launch code was 00000000
