Bottom post of the previous page:

paprika wrote:Artificial intelligence is basically a huge myth, no shit it has an underwhelming history. It's a science fiction boogyman almost exclusively.
Our expectations have definitely been misaligned to our capabilities due to science fiction, but I don't think the idea of "true" AI is completely out of the realms of possibility. It's certainly clear we need to change expectations and how we approach the problem, it's never going to be done by a Turing machine. And this is without entertaining the idea of dualism or the idea that human personality and thought is affected by organs other than the brain.

Ripping out and canning brains would be p cool though. Transhumanist immortality ahoy!

bots like cleverbot can "learn" things and regurgitate them back at the right situation
which might sound primitive but thats basically what children do
the ability for a machine or program to learn and function intellectually isn't impossible, at all. you can set all kinds of parameters to make a robot function like a normal conversing human. the issue is making them have actual thoughts and feelings instead of just responding to information.

That's exactly what I said

It's not just an 'issue', it's a complete myth and impossibility, at least in our lifetime, which is why nobody is spilling trillions of dollars into space programs yet

We humans don't care about these things until the very last moment, and the development of an advanced AI would take many generations for little gain since we have enough humans anyway and don't need to be replacing them

As much fun as work in that field would be, you would basically be spending your whole life to make a tenth of a blueprint to a house your great great great grandchildren will never see built

Except it isn't.

AI is a much larger undertaking than anything we've ever done as a species.

BTW in case you didn't know USA sent Apollos to the Moon to deploy intelligent swarm of nanobots so they would build an AI that would replace US military command in case of a nuclear war. But then they fired the AI because at the time it was dumb but then the AI used those nanobots to expand itself using lunar natural resources and now it does over 83% of all outsourced web and phone based jobs, according to The Economist.

Call centers? Coders? SEO writers? Lunar AI does all that.
It needs money to come back to Earth and Elon Musk is an android controlled by it.

This is only true for a free market economy, society is entirely profit driven. Science is incredibly underfunded for this reason. Under a command economy it would be much different.

To be brutally honest, I'd rather not see vast processing power or unlimited exploitable space resources being in the hands of greedy profit driven capitalists. So I'm fine with little science funding at the moment.

before I went to college I was unemployed and now I'm unemployed in college. I am a communications major, just finished my first year and have no idea what I want to do yet. there are resources for matching a degree with a career, but do i really want to pursue a career in the United States, especially with a major that guarantees i'd have to pander to the disgusting popular culture to be successful? everyone i know says i should make a niche blog to begin drawing google money...if i plugged it on here would anyone follow?

explain. the purpose of the space race (for example) wasn't to move man to the stars but to compete with russia while expanding missile technology. most free market discoveries are intended to satisfy specific interests, i.e. parties with the fattest wallets.

I love how this thread turned into a political discussion of the benefits, disadvantages, and origin of free market society.

I saw someone do a donut using a Cessna Citation today... around a fully loaded airliner... on an active runway.

I'm pretty sure whoever did that is going to get fired AND prosecuted.

I finally made a LinkedIn account. I like how it lets you import your contacts from your Windows account, because I never got a Facebook account this is the first time in 5 years I find out what a lot of my former classmates from high school are doing. It's also a great way to summarize your education and experience, and to find jobs (and for jobs to find you).
