If Parliament refuses to follow the referendum there will be riots. It'd be political suicide to go against the vote. And even if they did, it would be very bad for democracy as it sets a dangerous precedent of Parliament being able to ignore any future referendums they don't like the result of because "it would be destablising to the UK :^^^^)". Scots won't get their referendum, nor will NI because they can just trot out this excuse.

Parliament could ignore the vote. But they won't, because none of them are willing to risk their careers or their lives on it.

Can someone please inform an out of touch Canuk on why this all happened? Did the UK feel like it was putting more in to the EU than it was getting out?

I literally rag on Pascal for being French almost constantly, I use "tbh" unironically, spell armory as "armoury" and call Americans "Colonials". How could I have made it more obvious? Make my characters wear UK underwear?

Because we are basing the entire nation on a 70% turn out rate 1% difference between both.

Whatever you do, half of the population is going to be up in arms, and majority of that population are below 30 years old. When the baby boomers die it'll be these people who have to deal with the consequence of their vote.

More young people should have voted if they felt so strongly tbh. I voted Leave, got up at the crack of dawn to vote and all.

Honestly it's great to see what you wanted for years finally come to pass, or at least, a close approximation. I'd rather the EU have been dissolved and go back to it just being trade agreements but I'll take what victories I can get.

The UK got sick and tired of all the mudslimes flooding their country beheading their own citizenry in the streets while the rest of the EU nods from a moral high ground that this is okay and nothing is wrong.

Wait no it has nothing to do with that lol

net migration in 2015 in britain made up 0.5% of the population total and there's no distinction between muslim/non-muslims in that data total (just british/eu/non-eu) so i would take any idea of muslim/polish/paki/indian hordes with a grain of salt, but you and i are both american and i realize that shitty snap judgment hot takes are just in our blood.

i would assume a good chunk of the Leave voter bloc may have been motivated by UKIP-enabled immigration fears but i would also assume a good chunk were already EU-skeptic. EU parliament is effectively toothless and legislation is pushed by central bank and commission. The world has already seen what has happened to Greece getting it good long and hard under EU policy with no real hope of reform to ensure it doesn't happen again or to at least improve the relief effort. there's not much autonomy under EU rule, which would rub people the wrong way.

I think as of now it's a shit decision until I see what England does in the next few years. Farage already went on TV admitting that the "350m towards NHS" that was a cornerstone of the Leave campaign likely will not happen. I am skeptical about whether or not the UK can reach a similar or better trade deal with China and other countries than they already had with the EU. A Tory controlled government without needing to abide by the EU imposed human rights act (maternity leave, worker's rights, etc.) isn't a bright prospect. Scotland is likely going to peace out and question of Irish reunification is back on the menu. This is before factoring in the sterling's all but guaranteed uncertainty from now until the UK actually leaves. Labour's internally up in flames again. David Cameron is out (though admittedly I think that's good news for all involved).

As an outsider I feel like I've just seen someone drunkenly shoot themselves in the dick to prove to a hated enemy that they had the balls to do it. Like, you showed them, but...

The petition for a second referendum is going to be debated in parliament.

People are starting to go "Oh uhm I didn't think Leave would win and now I don't like the consequences." So basically, populism is shit and democracy is flawed and we should all adopt the Singapore Model.

From Wikipedia.
Singapore is a unitary, multiparty, parliamentary republic, with a Westminster system of unicameral parliamentary government. The People's Action Party has won every election since self-government in 1959.
Single party rule basically, they get shit done, there's no fuss and have virtually no corruption. That's why they're one of the economic powerhouses of Asia whilst being absolutely fucking tiny.

I think people are forgetting one of the reasons the EU has remained for as long as it has. Russia, or more specifically, Communism. Most countries in the EU are democratic, they were all in this organization so that if Communism attempted to annex parts of it they would all go to war with it to protect each other. Since Communism has mostly been dying out, the EU has lost one of these points that made it relevant.

But in the theoretical situation that the EU dissolves, what's Papa Russia next door gonna do? If there's no EU there's no economic sanctions on Russia for annexing shit everywhere and trying to take over the world.
