The 5th Element as it remains Gary Oldman's best film.

In all seriousness John Carpenter's the Thing.

I third the The Thing.

Aliens is great too.

I dunno if it would fall within sci-fi, but John Dies At the End is a great movie.

Thoughtsynapsis says to watch the older version. Because I've never seen The Thing. Older or newer version?

there's actually three films
there's the 1950's version which doesn't really follow the original story that much and there's the what people actually call the "old version" which is the 1982 version which is the best version imho.
The new one is garbage.
absolute garbage.

District 9 is the best science fiction film tbh.

I am partial to event horizon, it is a bit goofy like much scifi horror but I love the inanity of ftl = hell. Alien and aliens do horror better but the difference seems less to me.
I do like 2001 a space odyssey and the 5th element.

Bad sci fi movies? Starship troopers and a.i. artificial intelligence are things I have seen and disliked but the b movie pile obviously goes deeper.

Sci fi books I like Stephen Baxter's manifold series (space. time. origin) are good for various approaches to the fermi paradox but I haven't read the short story compilation he capped it off with. His collaboration series with Pratchett is pretty good if a bit lighter than his usual works.
Read part of Alastair Reynolds revelation space series but I prefer the stand alone pushing ice novel out of their works I have read so far. Nice to read space fiction that abstains from faster than light travel for the most part.
Honourable mention to John Steakley's armor even though I loaned it in audiobook form while having a headache and the repeated bad female tone impersonations I really enjoyed it. Oh and a short story I once read called beyond lies the wub.

For mediocre the lost fleet series is passable if you can tolerate how much of a mary sue the male main character is. Like how I occasionally need to roll my eyes when reading L.E. Modesitt Jr.

Bad sf novels: Isaac Asimov's foundation series, he is best known for his short story compilations for a reason. Saga of seven suns, an almost torturous way to be fed a setting piecemeal for the sake of a long series of boring twists spoiled by their own pacing.

what was that one movie where aliens invade earth and the MCs are a bunch of rich faggots and theres a scene where one of the guys smashes a shitton of booze in his apartment and leaks gas out of the stove and blows it up with a lighter and kills one of the big aliens
and then theres a scene where the MC and his gf go to the roof and the MC goes full badass mode and beats one of the aliens to death with his fucking hands and pulls out its brain
and at the end they get sucked into the mothership and the MC gets his brain sploojd out and put in an alien husk and he goes to his gf whos covered in slime or something and is going to be used for breeding and tries to comfort her but hes an alien now

>scifi movies
>not books
git gud you skrub.
as far as sci-fi books go:
anything and everything Asimov except the fourth, fifth and sixth foundation books. First three foundation books are great, the rest are eh. be wary of books written after his death by other writers, I doubt those are much good. note that the dude mostly wrote short stories so his short story bundles are the best (foundation series counts as short story bundle because thats what it is).
Iain M. Banks <- this dude is dead. I've only read the algebraist and inversions, both were good. algebraist contained quite some ancient aliens going "lol fuck you" which was 200% hilarious. idk about the rest of his books, though. (I guess inversions doesnt really count as science fiction.)
Revelation Space series by Alastair Reynolds <- probably some of the best science fiction i've ever read. 20/10 must read

i actually sort of liked starship troopers. it was a weird movie, but movies that you can think back to and think "wth" are great.
But yeah I can't really recall any particularily remarkable scifi movies. apparently snowpiercer is p good. pacific rim was great if you're willing to ignore the rather bad plot and just focus on giant robots punching monsters, but thats probably an insult to more serious science fiction movies.

I mean like, alien was a good movie, predator was a good movie too. both are sort of classics, though predator tends more towards the action movie genre rather than horror sci-fi.
oblivion was p good too.

@incoptientiemienencinee
saying that asimov's foundation series is bad is sort of untrue. the last three books were written MUCH later than the rest and were written as novels instead of asimov's familiar short stories. They're rather bad and retcon a lot of stuff.
The first three books are nice, though. Maybe not as good as some of his other short stories, but still rather good.

Sounds like SKYLINE (ALLCAPS TITLE) miggles?

The number of questions human brain fueled aliens raise is... high.

Ian M Banks is dead? How did I miss that? I really like the Culture novels I read Look to Windward, Matter and the hydrogen sonata .

Edge of Tomorrow was also a good movie, I watched it without really knowing what the aliens were capable of. Turned out to be a pleasant surpise, and well thought out by the movie makers. (New Gamemode? Heh.)

Primer

That was one of my favourite sci-fi movies. Possibly because it felt believable, out of reach, but believable.

dune was shit
primer was also shit
"what if i make a movie about something cool.................................................... and then make the cool thing be used in a mundane way........................................................ and then in the last 5 minutes have everything stop making sense entirely........................................"
the guy who made primer also made upstream color, which wasn't really confusing, but really artsy. it was decent.
2001 is a terrible film, and the book barely fares better.
i agree that edge of tomorrow was a great film.

Science fiction books > Science fiction movies. None of the Dune adaptations ever captured the book.

David Lynch's Dune does have a huge fun factor for me though given how utterly fucked in the head it was.

I liked Europa Report.

And if you can call it science fiction, Hunter Prey is also good.

>be a community that plays a science-fiction roleplaying game
>this limited scope of science-fiction movies talked about

I'mma list of a whole bunch, gonna shy away from movies that were already mentioned (although some good ones were mentioned already), no particular order:

Pitch Black
Total Recall (the original one with Arnold Schwarzenegger)
Terminator
Metropolis
Dark City
Soylent Green
Wrath of Khan
Her
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
They Live
Children of Men
Gattaca
RoboCop (again, the original)
Brazil
12 Monkeys
Stalker
The Matrix Trilogy (I personally like the sequels, I am ready for your hate)
Predators (the original Predator is good too though)
Cargo
Monsters
Akira
Minority Report
Cube (the sequels are OK)
Pacific Rim
Dredd (not to be confused with the Stallone movie)
The Host
Tetsuo
Ghosts of Mars
Slither
The Brother from Another Planet

aaaand I can't think of anything else.

EDIT: Also if you're interested I highly recommend watching the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, definitely for people interested in science fiction, film and art.

Paul is a great comedy scifi movie. It has Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, so you know you're in for a good show.
