Sci-fi and high fantasy televison tends to require a higher budget than other genres, so they need to be insanely popular to justify taking up airtime for the amount of money they cost. Why get 110% profit from your input on a sci-fi show when you can get 150% with another crime drama.

Someone greenlights these shows then some bean counter points out that it isnt profit maximizing and then the network does what it can to sabotage it because they cant afford to not show growth this quarter or their investors will throw a fit and replace the CEO.
